Josh Reynolds charged with domestic violence

By News / Wire

Wests Tigers star Josh Reynolds has been charged by NSW Police with assault occasioning actual bodily harm relating to an alleged domestic violence incident.

In a statement given to AAP, NSW Police have confirmed that at about 2pm on December 11, a woman attended St George Police Station to report an alleged assault.

Reynolds then attended the station at about 9.40pm where he was arrested and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm (domestic violence).

“Police will allege on 12 September, the 29-year-old woman suffered bruising to her right arm and left leg after allegedly being assaulted by a 30-year-old man,” the statement read.

The former State of Origin star was granted conditional bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court on Wednesday, December 18, where he will vigorously defend the charge.

An apprehended violence application has also been made on behalf of the woman.

In the meantime, the NRL is working with Wests Tigers and the Integrity Unit to determine whether Reynolds be stood down from club duties.

“The NRL takes any allegation of violence or disrespect towards women extremely seriously,” an NRL spokesperson said.

“The Integrity Unit is seeking further information from NSW Police before determining any immediate action.”

Earlier this year the NRL enacted a “no fault” stand down policy, allowing CEO Todd Greenberg to use his discretion to suspend players charged with criminal offences, particularly those involving women and children.

Manly Sea Eagles player Dylan Walker and Penrith’s Tyrone May were both stood down for the duration of the court process under the law.

The maximum jail term for assault occasioning actual bodily harm in NSW is five years, which falls below the requirements to trigger an automatic stand down.

There can be a lot of reasons why a person can be charged in relation to a DV complaint months later. It could be that a recent incident has caused the complainant to make a complaint to police and in the process has provided information in relation to earlier incidents. The police might decide to lay charges in relation to the earlier incident but not the more recent incident. That decision can often be made due to a variety of factors, such as the accused person confessing to the earlier incident, but denying the recent incident. Or maybe there were photos or medical records or eye witnesses of the earlier incident, but the second incident might have only consisted of threats. It is also entirely possible that investigations are continuing and further charges might be laid. That’s not to say that Josh Reynolds is guilty of anything at all, just a general comment about not dismissing a DV complaint just because it wasn’t made in the immediate aftermath.

Significantly different. If proven to be true, Reynolds will be taken out of the game and most likely heard before Rnd 1 starts. If JDB is proven to be true he'll be taken out of polite society.

Most of the damage to the image of the game is when the player is accused of something rightly or wrongly and it is splashed all over the media for weeks and months on end sometimes. Just about all those who don't follow the game would still not realise that most of the serious allegations which generated the biggest headlines , including Coffs Harbor, El-Masri , Radradra and the others were nothing but nonsense. Many who do follow the game don't appear to understand these players were found not guilty , ( if a player is charged with a serious offence , it must mean he did something, is the unbelievable line trotted out to this day across the board) Once charged , the mud sticks and no policy can do anything about that. Anyone who wants to destroy someones reputation unfairly , now has the added weapon of possibly destroying their career as well. With the most serious cases , the career is destroyed anyway, if they are guilty, so the main impact will be all on the shoulders of those who did nothing wrong.

Just off the top of my head you can get charged with waisting Police time and lying to Police, then I'm fairly sure the wrongly accused has the right to sue for damages incurred. So your statement "there are no repercussions" is false but I suspect you already knew that. Virtue signaling? Ever heard the one about those in glass houses.....

Here we go again! The NRL circus is in town and it isn't even Christmas. Just remember the outcomes of the allegations against Brett Stewart, Dylan Walker, SKD, Jonathan Thurston, Semi Radradra et al. Even JDB is awaiting his day in court. If they are PROVEN to be guilty then punt them from the game. Until then let the legal process take it's course and stop flinging poo like a bunch of angry chimpanzees!

The important thing to remember is that we really do not know.

Some abuse victims take years to speak out. Not saying whether this particular case is true or not, but 3 months being 'too long' to be true is absolute rubbish. This is where the No Fault Stand Down policy fails. De Belin couldn't play because it would be harmful to the image of the game, yet if Reynolds played in round one it would surely have the same impact.

I'm not sure whats more disturbing. The allegation against Reynolds, or your comment that for no other reason than he is being charged 3mths after the alleged incident, his accuser should "go to jail" for abusing the system. Or worse still, that another Roarer agreed with you and implied she's a "court room pest". You should both be ashamed of yourselves. You know nothing about this incident, yet you disbelieve the accuser simply because she didn't "lay a complaint" soon enough for your liking. Maybe she was afraid of what would happen to her if she said something? Maybe she was afraid of what might happen to him if she said something? Earlier this year, Reynolds came out and discussed the loss of his unborn twin boys weeks before their birth. We don't know if the woman involved in this case is his partner who also lost her sons, but maybe try some compassion and understanding around what is no doubt an awful situation, rather than immediately accusing someone of something you no absolutely nothing about.
