Why your team will do better in 2020: Gold Coast Titans

By Greg / Roar Pro

I’m expecting the fast-approaching 2020 season to be one of the closest we’ve ever seen.

The top teams all seem likely to regress. The Roosters have lost their halfback and superstar centre.

The Storm will have no genuine halfback and a new-look backline, while Cameron Smith is another year older.

Souths have a super backline but will need to find replacements for John Sutton and Burgess brothers George and Sam.

The recent history of both the Raiders and Eels means I’m not confident either club will repeat last year’s performances.

While I personally have big wraps on the remaining teams in the eight, they will need to improve on last year’s performances to feature late in September.

This article, however, is the first of eight that will focus on the bottom eight teams arguing why they will be stronger sides this year, and I’ll start with last year’s wooden spooners, the Gold Coast Titans.

(Chris Hyde/Getty Images)

There’s no denying the Titans were terrible last year and have a plethora of problems to fix. They lost captain and forward leader Ryan James to injury early and lost their $1 million halfback to mental health issues for much of the season. Other big-money signings failed to deliver and will need performances on par with their contract value for a Titans revival.

New coach Justin Holbrook will be tasked with getting the best out of these misfiring stars, but if he can do it, there’s enough talent for the Gold Coast to be competitive in 2020.

Their strength is in the forward pack. If these players play to their potential, they can match any pack in the competition. Shannon Boyd is a former Australian representative who failed to make an impact as a bench forward last year. The man-mountain has reportedly entered the preseason in peak fitness for the first time in his career and is keen to make amends this year. After spending the off-season boxing, Jarrod Wallace is another representative front-rower entering the preseason in excellent physical condition.

Add in (possibly departing) Origin lock Jai Arrow, young gun Mo Fotuaika and captain Ryan James, who may start games as an edge forward, and their middle rotation is sound.

Joining James as edge forward options include New Zealand rep Kevin Proctor and other big-money recruits who failed to deliver last year in Bryce Cartwright and Tyrone Peachey. Cartwright, the one-time wunderkind, seems destined to never live up to his potential, while Peachey seems undone by his own versatility. However, if these two former Panthers could rediscover their mojo, they’d both be genuine matchwinners who could invigorate the Titans attack.

Finally, the likes of Jai Whitbread, Leilani Latu and Keegan Hipgrave provide a bit of depth with players of genuine first-grade quality.

Sports opinion delivered daily

The spine boasts two quality hookers. Former Origin hooker Nathan Peats provides arguably the best defensive line speed in the NRL and will thus be leading his forwards in defence. The better-than-serviceable Mitch Rein will likely come off the bench to provide a bit of attacking spark. If Holbrook chooses to play just the one hooker, Peachey may at times fill in here off the bench also.

Young halfback Ash Taylor was considered the next great half as recently as two seasons ago by many in the game. This led to his million-dollar deal and expectations that last year he couldn’t fulfil. However, the ability is certainly there, and a happy Taylor will go a long way to making the Titans successful. Partnering Taylor will be his great mate Tyrone Roberts. Roberts has never been a standout player but is better than average, having led Titans, Knights and Werrington to finals appearances.

Finally, the exciting young fullback AJ Brimson will provide plenty of X factor in attack. What the diminutive fullback may lack in kick return strength he can make up for with his speed and ball-playing in the Titans backline. After spending the off-season working on his positional play with former fullback Michael Gordon, Brimson should be a much more consistent player in what will be his first full year at fullback.

Like many teams, the Titans will need their spine to remain free from injury given they have few experienced players to call upon. Exciting rookie Tanah Boyd, however, is a young half with a big future who may add to his two first-grade games this year.

Gold Coast’s real weakness is ultimately their backline. Their standout is centre Brian Kelly, who, despite the team having a lean year last year, still managed 123 metres a game, ten linebreaks, eight tries and five try assists for the year. These numbers are nearly as good as any centre in the game and will only improve as the team improves. English international Kallum Watkins will likely join him in the centres with the reliable Anthony Don and the speedy Phillip Sami.

This backline has the attributes to more than hold its own in attack. However, big improvements will need to be made defensively. Having now spent some time playing alongside each other, hopefully the combinations can improve and new coach Holbrook can add some resolve to their defence. Although, again, there is little depth to speak of, young Treymain Spry has plenty of potential, while Dale Copley provides an experienced option.

So there you have it. The Titans have enough talent and attacking spark to trouble any team. To truly compete next year they will need their halfback to return to form, while their representative-quality forwards need to stand up for the duration of the season.

Improved defence was the signature of new coach Holbrook during his time at St Helens and during his years as an assistant to Trent Robinson, and a bit of luck with injuries will go along way to lifting his side off the bottom of the table. If this was to coincide with the likes of Cartwright and Peachey returning to their best, they could even find themselves playing finals football.

Although they will be big improvers, there are just too many ifs and not enough depth for them to be playing finals football this year. However, I expect them to cause plenty of upsets throughout the season.

Where do you think the Titans can finish next season?

One of the Titans (many) issues of 2019 was the limp way they started games (and indeed their season). They got themselves on the back foot early losing their first four games while only being able to muster a measly eight points (they were kept scoreless in three of these). The Titans ended up on the wrong end of the scoreline 20 times last season and could only manage 6 first-half points or fewer on 12 of those occasions. Quite simply Holbrook has to find a way to get his more than handy forward pack to come out of the blocks at the start of matches and lay some points on early.

I expected them to go a lot better than they did last year. There is a lot of talent and potential there but they basically don't play as a team. The club obviously has some culture problems where many players are just there for a holiday and don't put in for 80m. Hopefully Holbrook (and Mal lol) have turned that attitude around. They need Ryan James to play the majority of games though, he is their heart and soul which they missed dearly last year.

I’ve got the Titans as my smokey to make the 8. I think they have the individual talent and a new coach just might be able to pull them together. I also think there are a few players there playing for contracts and basically the future of the club.

Let's hope they give Holbrook a chance to see his contract out. Since Hayne got rid of Henry they've had more coaches than Foggs.

I also think Maguire has done a great job at the Tigers, and it is an example of what a Titans fan should be expecting/hoping for in the short term.

Great article but have to disagree on one thing. Keegan Hipgrave is not a genuine first grade option. He deadset offers nothing but penalties and errors.

I'm more than a tad dubious about the UK and how our coaches go over there Greg. Nathan Brown's a great example where he did super well in England and only moderately so at Newcastle. "a truly good coach should be able to create a game plan to suit the cattle he has, rather than need to completely rebuild his roster". Completely agree, but I also question how far coaches/Clubs need to go based on expectations? IMO Michael Maguire has done a super job at the Tigers with the cattle he has, but they're still not making the finals. Robinson however is making finals, but they've had to bring in a fair bit of fresh talent to do so. I suspect Holbrook will need, not a complete rebuild, but at least one real impact forward and maybe an organiser to be finals competitive.

They need to get Bozo in to the joint to shake the joint right up. Most of the roster would be gone within 18 months.

Thanks Dutski, So much rests on Ash Taylor. I hope he can get things right, not just for his and the Titans sake, but when he does he will is great to watch. Whilst I agree Roberts isn't a star player, I wouldn't go so far as to say that Roberts is the weak link. He has played plenty of finals footy and over 150 games. If the Titans again struggle, it wont be because of Roberts. Like all halves, particularly the lesser halves, he will need his forwards playing well for him to make an impact. As you say he wont rip teams apart, but he will do his job.

The player I always worry about when playing the Titans is Brimson , he can be very dangerous.

Hi Paul, thanks for the kind words. To me Holbrook's UK results have already proven he can coach. As much as they have mismanaged their cap, as I keep repeating, they have enough talent there to be competitive and can improve in future seasons as they get their cap sorted. To me, a truly good coach should be able to create a game plan to suit the cattle he has, rather than need to completely rebuild his roster to suit the style he wants to play. I have high hopes that Holbrook fits this mould. Having said that we cant expect miracles from Holbrook. They still haven't got a roster capable of top 4 and unlikely to be top 8, but there is no excuses for a repeat of last year.

I don't think he will hit the million again but with 2 years to run he has time to get things right. If he can play anywhere near his best he will be a very good halfback entering his prime years when his next contract is signed. Should be worth better than half his current value. If he continues to regress however he will be lucky to get another contract. All things so far seem to suggest he is on track for a return to form.

Agreed, the recruitment has been horrible. Paying big money for both Boyd and Latu showed Brennan misread the direction the game was going where smaller fitter players are more valuable than the big boppers. Still these big men have a role in the game and can be game breakers in their own right, ala Asofa-Solomona. Ive never been a huge fan of Peachey, praised for his versatility but doesn't really fit any one position. Again to me someone who has been over valued by Brennan. Having said that he is a guy that you just need on the field late in a half against tired defenders and he can make stuff happen. Their distribution of funds is terrible, but as the article says there is more than enough talent in their squad. I would like to see them get it together on and off the field because I think the Rugby League / Sport doesn't work on the Gold Coast thinking is wrong. The club could become a powerhouse, but they need to get a lot right first. Agree about Kelly. He could be something special, but we will never truly see his talents if his team continues to struggle.

How much is Mal being paid as "head of performance & culture"? Salary should be reduced by at least half.

Good write up. You could have also simply said, Why will the Titans be better? - well they can't be much worse. There is talent in that squad. I think it will all come down to whether Holbrook is the Taylor Whisperer and can get the young halfback to play to his potential. If that happens and Brimson kicks on, there is no reason they can't compete with the 7th-11th placed sides.

I reckon Ash Taylor's next contract will be less than half what he is on now.

This is a great first piece Greg and I look forward to reading the next 7 articles you mentioned. I know you've focused on the players in this piece, but these days in the NRL it's also about how the Club;s tracking, how the coach is going, etc which in turn provides confidence to the players and ultimately their fans. Right now, the Titans management needs to show it is settled and has short & long term plans for both the team and the Club as a whole. The coach is clearly an unknown and as we know from experience, plenty can talk a good game but few can deliver when asked. If I was a Titans fan, I'd expect nothing for a year or two while Holbrook sorts out the roster he wants and the guys get used to his coaching style. I'd suggest bottom 3 this year, just outside the top 8 in 2021 and if they continue to improve, the finals in 2022. That is, if Holbrook can really coach, if they can recruit smart and the Club doesn't implode.

The Titans will be lucky to improve a couple of places from last years last position. Jai Arrow..one of the Gold Coast's better players has already bailed out for next year...not a good sign New coach Holbrook, needs to be a miracle worker...no easy task for a rookie

Nice first article Greg – welcome to the author’s club! There’s plenty of good players at the Titans for sure. I get the feeling that this is a team where everyone has to play at their absolute best to match it with the rest of the comp. You’re spot on about the forwards being the strength for sure. Lots to like there, but the bench does drop away very quickly. It’s the starting pack or nothing I’m afraid. I hope Ash Taylor finds his mojo. A spine of Brimson, Taylor and Peats/Rein has plenty of spark. Roberts is the weaker link, but unlike the others he rarely has a shocker – it’s just that even at his best he is unlikely to rip a side apart. Defensive steel will help. It will take a lot going right though if that’s enough. Look forward to the rest of the series of articles.
