Bulldog facing charges after car crash

By News / Wire

Western Bulldogs vice-captain Lachie Hunter has allegedly been involved in crashes with several cars in Melbourne.

Police were called to Middle Park about 8.45pm on Thursday following reports a Toyota SUV had crashed into four parked vehicles.

When officers arrived, the Toyota was found but the driver had left the scene.

They found the 25-year-old Hunter in South Yarra and also fined him $1652 in breach of the coronavirus restrictions.

Victoria Police on Friday said the driver was given a preliminary breath test and a subsequent evidentiary breath test, returning a reading of 0.123.

Hunter will be charged on summons with drink driving and other traffic matters.

In a short statement on Friday, the Western Bulldogs said the club was “aware of an incident involving Hunter on Thursday evening”.

“The club is in the process of investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, and will confirm details when possible.”

Yes, new info, good sense from the police. And I think the police do an outstanding, difficult job most of the time. They should apply the same decency and common sense to Bailey Smith.

Report indicates that Gowers was not fined, but received a warning which suggests a common sense approach from the police.

News today that Bailey Smith and Billy Gowers have been fined $1,652 each for flouting social distancing rules when they helped a distressed mate. Neither of them had much choice. We all understand social distancing and the police are being asked to enforce these. But this is just smart-alec behaviour by the police. Hunter, who was obviously in no state to drive himself, could have legally left in an uber or taxi but is instead driven by a friend who it's accepted was not with him but there by coincidence. We all need to be responsible and take these new covid-19 regulations seriously but there are so many ridiculous inconsistencies; 99% of our population would do what Bailey Smith did if they were in the same situation. Any decent person would. Hunter didnt run from the scene, he exchanged details with other parties first. Is he supposed to wait for police to turn up? Is that a rule of law? Isnt it reasonable a person returns home at some stage, except that in this case hed had an argument with his girlfriend so didnt want to return home. Maybe Smith's girlfriends parents should have took him inside their house and sobred him up. Buthe had just smashed into their two cars so they probably werent too happy with him and they would now be fined for flouting social distancing, so Bailey has smartly removed them from the equation. And what is Gowers supposed to do when a distressed mate turns up at his door who doesnt want to go home and cant drive anywhere else? The cops are angry Hunter potentially has a court defence that his alcohol content was a consequence of drinking at Tower's place after the accident - so they are taking revenge on Smith and Gowers and sending a message to Hunter that he might get away with it (still highly unlikely) but at a cost of dragging two friends into it. Hopefully Hunter will pay their fines but seriously police, show some common decency towards Smith and Gowers' innocent roles in this. I think they've both been responsible citizens.

Agreed. Getting off lightly is all those Collingwood guys who self reported to avoid recreational drug strikes - got nothing at all. It forced the AFL to tighten the rules. How did Eddie handled that Didak incident? Its old now but I remember something about a shot from a car he was in.

Trouble is the guy will come out with all the regular cliches. I'm sorry for my actions, I've embarrassed myself and the club. Just cop it sweet. Under the current regulations he's lucky he's not going to jail . He's one of the one's that has been caught, others probably haven't been.

Now the Crow's Tyson Stengles has been done for DUI and DU. ------ Pay cuts must have been hard if he couldn't register his car.

Throw the book at him, being drunk and stupid and having an accident is one thing but fleeing the scene when you don't know who is in the parked cars. Much worse then Stephenson

Banned for DD is hardly getting off. Luke Hodge's story is what I'd call "getting off". He was hero worshipped.

Has anyone seen Gilligans Zoom interview with Barrett? I think he’s been on the turps with Lachie Hunter!

No sympathy for these idiots. Most of society will have some sort of increased mental health issues at the moment. For example, many who have lost their jobs will be impacted by the news of others (on 50% pay) flouting social distancing rules, increasing the risk of prolonging said rules and delaying their return to work.

It's funny how people are so willing to say that mental health should be looked after but so willing to preemptively dismiss it.

Triple the legal yeah nah, was leading news in all media and anything subsequent however minor has been leading news, far from swept under the carpet. Crashed his car and was picked up about 200m down the road and taken to get a blood test immediately. Dunno what history you're rewriting man, it's not like he blames his dog.
