WA clubs granted training exemption, but state borders to remain shut

West Coast and Fremantle will be allowed full contact AFL training in Western Australia before relocating to a Queensland-based quarantine hub.

WA Premier Mark McGowan on Thursday confirmed the Eagles and Dockers will be granted access to club gyms from May 18, with full training permitted seven days later.

But McGowan is standing firm on a refusal to grant exemptions for the clubs to fly in and out of the state for games, forcing the teams to temporarily shift their operations in order for the AFL season to resume.

“We have worked overnight and the last couple of days with the clubs so we’re going to permit full contact training from the 25th of May,” McGowan told reporters.

“As long as the facilities and arrangements are not open to and used by the general public.”

While McGowan is not willing to grant border exemptions, he instead continues to push the case for some of Victoria’s 10 clubs to relocate to a quarantine hub in WA.

“The two-week quarantine arrangement needs to stay in place, the integrity of the state borders needs to stay,” McGowan said.

“It appears to me Victorian clubs aren’t willing to leave their comfort zone and come over here to hub in Western Australia, yet they expect our teams to go over there.

“It’s a little bit rich and it seems to me they’re a little bit pampered and they should be prepared to do the hard yards and go somewhere else.”

The Eagles and Dockers have both nominated the Gold Coast as their preferred hub location.

Loved McGowan's comments and then today he backed them up again. Never been big into politics but this is a guy I'd vote for again, the way he's lead the state through this crisis has been really commendable.

Sweet mate, I find it difficult to trust the Victorian CMO ability when taking recent events into account, I understand the economics but that was never the argument that was put forth it was the human toll that was used and the way the expectations on WA and SA have once again come down to one of the three major Vic argument (it's our game and there's a contract being the others) on we have ten teams instead of the physical and mental health for all players and staff and their families is outrageous. The AFL isn't as poorly off as claimed and could've negotiated a fairer outcome, certain Vic players are pampered and are happier sending ppl into Australia Petrie dish ATM than consider the greater good. What magowan said was no different to what Shuey said ultimately.

we will have to agree to disagree on this particular issue. With half the teams in Victoria, it was always going to be more economically viable to keep them there if possible... and this season is all about finances. The community spread of, or threat of, covid19 is what dictates what happens and how... and at the moment, the measures taken to resume training and playing are deemed sufficient to not increase the likelihood of exposure and spread. But, every state may take a slightly different view... as we see today. WA is not exposed here, it is only that our footy clubs have to endure the most inconvenience whilst the "pampered Melbourne teams" sleep in their own beds, or passed out behind the wheel after sideswiping 4 parked cars.

Yes and yes. Contracts can be renegotiated. "wherever there is a will, there is a way", so the saying goes. The contract itself highlights the self serving actions of AFL HQ, and undermines the notion they are custodians of the game for all of us imo.

Sorry mate must've misread, we won't hear anything from the majority except now they have their way we are being childish. Read between the lines of what Shuey said last night and the division is massive and the wce stance is very similar to Marc magowan. My point is if ppl cared as much as they claim they'd do anything to get it going again not complain at the slightest possibility of adversity so the status quo remains, children was the major argument from the Victorian sides regarding hubs yet they are happy to send the side with the most amount of dads and kids in the AFL with a coach with four kids and a assistant with his own kids as well as adopted siblings into a hub so they get paid and stay comfy, very sad state of affairs but comical to listen to Jordan Lewis and Matthew Richardson get uppity without thinking beyond their mates.

My point was that when the AFL leaked the possibility of 3 hubs outside of Victoria, the AFLPA and Dangerfield almost immediately put a stop to it. Now that 4 (non Victorian) teams are forced to relocate into hubs for the sake of the AFL, the AFLPA and Dangerfield have not said a word.

He’s just tapping into his constituents concerns to score a couple of points on a topic, that in the big scheme of things, isn’t terribly important. Straight out of the political playbook, they all do it. His popularity is through the roof atm so he’s making the most of it.

I picture the AFLPA as a Jack Russell on a short leash held by Gilligan. He has a sensible furry coat to keep warm in Melbournes cold, ordered online of course due to Covid and the AFLPA letters were sewn into the coat by Gills mum.

That really cuts Ritchie, you might find more desirable responses if you didn't waltz around with a big v tattoo being upset and a off attitude to anyone who has a opinion about Richmond or Victorian footy, you've become quite boring and one trick pony.

The AFL isn't as financially poor as they are saying, now my local club and my WAFL club that is dire straits. It will be more damaging if the season stops a month after starting which is a very good possibility.

I am not sure how well the AFL could go at renegotiating the contract. Paul D (under a previous version of Paul D, making this hard to find) wrote an excellent article on the contract extension. Not sure if you saw it (maybe you were Joe B then?) https://www.theroar.com.au/2018/07/10/grand-final-mcg-til-2057-shows-limits-afls-power/

Aflpa won’t do anything, magowan was reflecting the mood of ppl who saw their team get told no advantage but hey you guys go north east by 6hrs and set up your season their while we stay in our on beds, fairness and equality is laughable commodities ATM I hope we set the comp up mainly in a city with over 90 cases in last seven days that’s smart. It’s amazing how quiet danger, cotch and Riewoldt have become since the don’t have to leave home. And the BS the AFL could go under is BS

He's done his job and seriously what is the aflpa going to do or say he voiced an opinion on what was common knowledge regarding Victorians not wanting to hub, anyway there was a way to create a fair season which the AFL was all about when stopping wce training in 10s but it's quickly gone out the window and the slathering Vic's on here will whinge we are being mean, get your mum's at ready I'll be eating oysters and drinking lovely great Southern ales and wines and scoffing artisan cheeses.

Do you believ he’s speaking like a shire president Joe? Or did a mighty Victorian speak and you crumbled at your knees, magowan was privvy to more behind the scenes stuff regarding covid so probably is directing anger appropriately. All we want is a fair competition this year which has been given up on in favour of 10 teams joe, and if not the premier voicing the attitude of the public then who? And if you don’t speak up you just let the same thing happen again and again and again. A system with all sides in hubs would’ve happened until the AFL had to appease the Victorian sides which are suddenly silent know WC, Freo, Adl and port are the hubbed sides and they remain at home training in their facilities.

He is not the first, nor last, premier to do that. Tbf, if AFL HQ were to try renegotiate a fairer GF hosting arrangement, the Vic premier would, no doubt, tread a similar path.
