AFL unveils fixtures up to Round 5

By The Roar / Editor

Football’s return has been mapped out further this afternoon, with the AFL today revealing the full fixtures for Rounds 3, 4 and 5 of the restarted competition.

Round 2 was leaked overnight by several Melbourne newspapers before being officially confirmed this morning. It will see big clubs Collingwood and Richmond get the season back underway with a blockbluster clash at the MCG, while Hawthorn will make their first trip to Kardinia Park since 2006 on the Friday night when tackle Geelong.

Both WA clubs begin their stints in Queensland with clashes against the locals, with the Lions hosting Fremantle at the Gabba on Saturday afternoon and the Suns hosting the Eagles at Metricon later that night.

A last-minute easing of regulations by the South Australian government means the Power and Crows will play a Showdown at Adelaide Oval before heading up to Queensland as well.

Other Round 2 matches include Carlton hosting Melbourne at Marvel Stadium on Saturday, before Sundays sees Sydney host Essendon at the SCG, GWS tackle North Melbourne and St Kilda play the Western Bulldogs.

Interestingly, Sunday timeslots have been changed for this four-week blocks, with the match times for that day now 1:05pm, 3:35pm and 6:05pm.

The season was paused following Round 1 in late March due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Crowds will not be permitted at matches until further notice.

The AFL said the next block of fixtures – likely to be Round 6 and 7 – will be released at the conclusion of Round 3.

The only reason to have a second team is because you have little confidence in your first team. Those finals losses really are stacking up I suppose.

Don’t worry, both Richmond and WCE won’t be there. And the Tigers used to be my second team. Cured.

And another thing Scott. If Richmond are the top ranked team as you say, won’t every non-Vic team that plays Richmond at home have an advantage over non-Vic teams that have to play Richmond away. How are you going to even that up? Do you see what I mean about doing your head in if you try to quantify and rectify every perceived advantage?

I understand where you are coming from but I still think it is ridiculous for a number of reasons: 1. It swings things too far the other way. West Coast will have an advantage over Richmond, especially with flying and playing on the day you fly. 2. Which other non-hub team is expected to give up a home game? 3. You expect Adelaide to potentially stay another week in a hub (assuming they are allowed to return to play in Adelaide by then) – how do you think their players would like that? How much will that cost? 4. You are trying to even up the fixture after 5 rounds. There are another 13 rounds to be released, why not wait and see what is released? You said it yourself: “Every year some fixtures are tougher then others” But at this stage we don’t even have a full fixture so it is too early to judge. The hub teams could end up at Metricon for the whole year. Are you going to suggest that every team who plays West Coast away should follow it up with a home game against Adelaide if that happens?

I don’t think west coast have a disadvantage. West coast draw is even. They get the away game vs Port up there. Even if they played Richmond at the G, it would be a likely loss but still completely even as it would be an away game. I think Adelaide have a disadvantage and Richmond have an advantage with the current schedule. This fixes both those things. There isn’t a single other thing out of whack with the schedule. Every year some fixtures are tougher then others. Brisbane and Gold Coast not travelling to Perth means diddly squat. They will still travel interstate 8 times. They will not be playing any of their away games on nuetral grounds. My suggestion is so far from ridiculous, it is in fact the most perfect solution possible. It sorts out the only 2 problems with the fixture as it stands and doesn’t involve further border crossings. There is no possible better scenario then that, it would just mean Richmond are sitting on the exact opposite side of the bad coin toss. Can you see now where we are coming from? Adelaide, west coast, Freo and Port have no home ground advantage on the Gold Coast. They are all still staying in hotel rooms. It would be Richmonds 2nd game there plus they’ve played there the last 3 seasons. Anyway all that is irrelevant, what’s relevant is the best team playing what would be there hardest away game of the year in a nuetral state. That is an advantage that currently no other teams have. I think you are getting caught up with it being your team, which I can completely understand. I would do the same, but it’s about the best team being awarded an advantage. By saying Richmond playing a home game on the Gold Coast is ridiculous, then welcome to our side of the argument. Be warned we are pretty whingy over here

No not difficult & not negative. It is obvious that the Tigers had a win on this. I find it really difficult to understand your logic given the fact you think that the Tigers having 8 games in a row on there home ground is not a great bonus for the Tigers, yet you think this is a positive for the Eagles. And the original fixture is dead & buried so is irrelevant. If we got into that all the lesser teams would be up in arms.

Suck it up buddy! You play the ball where it lands. Even if it was played in Perth, the mighty Tigers would win.

I think your suggestion is ridiculous. On one hand you say it doesn't matter that Brisbane or Gold Coast don't travel to Perth because they will play other interstate games, yet somehow Richmond are supposed to have a home game in a state Adelaide is basing itself in because they have an away game there instead of Perth. I get it that it is likely to be better for Richmond than travelling to Perth to play West Coast, but any advantage would be far outweighed by what you are proposing and would not address the so-called disadvantage that you think West Coast has. What about the fact that Adelaide and Port get to stay longer at home with the Showdown in round 2? Wouldn't that be an advantage over West Coast and Freo? It seems to me that there are a core group of Roarers who are so focused on Richmond they can't ever see anything else. If you try to quantify and then even up every little advantage or disadvantage, any year but this year in particular, you will do your head in. At the very least, why not wait for the draw in its entirety to be released before assuming something needs to be evened up?

That will all be part of the draw. They will play their 8 interstate away games just like everyone else. As long as they play those teams in their home state then it’s irrelevant to what we are talking about. What do you think of my suggestion about Richmond playing a home game vs Adelaide on the Gold Coast In Round 6. Sorts out every issue with the draw. What do ya think?

I’m gonna write this on here enough times so hopefully someone at the AFL reads it. The only team so far to receive a disadvantage through the fixture is Adelaide The only team to receive an advantage through the fixture is Richmond. They both play round 5 on the Gold Coast. So the perfect scenario to square everything up is to stay up there and play; Round 6 - Richmond (home) vs Adelaide (away) at Metricon stadium, Gold Coast. Make it happen AFL

I’ve figured it out perfectly. Round 6 - Richmond (home) vs Adelaide (away) at Metricon stadium, Gold Coast. Evens up the only issue with the fixture so far. Everyone’s happy ????

But they also get to play Freo in Qld. So it means neither team will have to travel to Perth during home and away whereas every other team most likely will have to once. Instead they will have extra trips to Melbourne or Sydney. That is surely an advantage.
