Former Wallabies sign with Western Force

By Justin Chadwick / Wire

Western Force coach Tim Sampson is adamant his team will be competitive in Australia’s new rugby competition, and he’ll be helped by two former Wallabies.

One-Test centre Kyle Godwin and veteran prop Greg Holmes have joined the Force for 2020.

Fly-half Jono Lance will also return to the club following his recent stint with Worcester Warriors in the English Premiership.

Godwin was touted as a future star when he burst through the ranks at the Force as a teenager.

A bright Wallabies career looked on the cards at that point, but a series of injuries meant Godwin’s sole Test for Australia came in 2016.

The 27-year-old was on the lookout for a new club after recently completing his two-year contract with Irish side Connacht, and his addition to the Force will add some flair to the back line.

Holmes notched 27 Tests for the Wallabies between 2005-2016, and more recently the 37-year-old spent three seasons with Exeter Chiefs in the English Premiership.

The arrival of Godwin, Holmes and Lance adds vital experience to a youth-laden squad.

Sampson said the Force’s title-winning National Rugby Championship campaign last year proved that the team’s younger players could stand up against opponents who have Super Rugby experience.

He is confident the Force can again punch above their weight when they take on the Reds, Waratahs, Brumbies, and Rebels.

“What we can gauge ourselves on is how we performed in the National Rugby Championship the last couple of years, where we did play against squads that had a lot of Super Rugby players,” Sampson said.

“We did perform well.

“They (opponent teams) had their Wallaby players unavailable, but we also had a lot of players out last year and we won the Championship.”

Lance has fully thrown himself into every team he's ever played for. Even his short term stint at Worcester which then resulted in a a long term contract after his Reds stint.

That's a pretty ludicrous comparison and interpretation. Hooper firstly is turning around and then needs to take off while Lance is at full pace. Hooper also matches Lance for pace the entire distance. Except as Lance is 10-20m wider Hooper needs to cover more ground to catch him. Then of course Hooper has just got up from a big clean out he's had to work to get to, while Lance is positioned on the wing in D fully rested. That's after Hooper has been working much harder than Lance for the 38 minutes prior, because the workrate of a 7 is much higher than that of a 10.

That was a big day for the Force in a lot of ways. However one of the standouts for me was that by the end of the game the only guys still working hard for NSW was Hooper. My respect for him went up a notch after that game. He has a big ticker.

Slow?? Then what does that make Hooper? Watch this from 2:58 when Hooper couldn’t catch Lance over 70m only just before 1/2 time in Perth. A Go To top 5 minutes of highlights for when you need a cheer-up.

One would think so although Godwin did play 10 for the Australian under 20s and his club.

I think he may have played at school as a 10 (but i have no special info on this so it might be hearsay) but when he played for the Force he played as a 12/13. I haven't seen him play as a 10 but my initial thinking would be that he has the body size and running skills of a midfield back rather than flyhalf. If any other Roarers have seen him play 10 and have a different view I'd love to hear what they think?

Hi OOP There are a few sights around Rakaia, including the Rakaia Gorge, Lake Coleridge and Mt Hutt but they're not really hikes so much as drives. It would depend on how long a tramp you want to take, but I've heard good things about Mt Alfred and Isthmus Peak, both within a hoy of Queenstown. Milford Track is worth a go, it's at least 2 or 3 days (their website says 4) Elizabeth Point on the West Coast is only a few hours, the track used to start near Rapahoe. If you do that one, take a couple of hours and head into Runanga, go east up the hill and do the Coal Creek Falls track, it's a bit of a local secret. The walk is only an hour or so there and back, well worth it. You could do both, and Punakaiki in one day in fact. Hope that helps

The first half of 2014 he was probably the form 12 in Australia; didn't score a lot himself but set up others well and was a major reason why the Force were 4th in the table. Then he got injured and was never quite as effective for us after that.

I thought Jooste was a 10 at ACT and then slid sideways to 12. You seem pretty confident so I'm happy to run with your understanding. I just thought he finished the NRC playing 12.

Piru, my friend. How have you been - haven’t seen you around here much lately? Great to see the Force back in Aussie rugby. I agree he’s a quality player. Out of interest, can you recommend some good areas in the south island to go hiking and driving through hills and mountains and perhaps stay a few farms away from crowds of tourists. I’m planning for a day when we can travel again soon.

I can recall a few times he had the sea of blue on our feet. I mean, I'm not president of his fan club or anything, but he's definitely had his moments https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVqT2ifsOdE

He's a solid 10 on attack without being flashy but is easily a better defender at 10 than any 10 that has played for the Wallabies in the last 10 years. His kicking for goal is ok without being on par with the worlds best and his kicking in general play is astute without being super star status. he generally makes good decisions and doesn't get rattled by pressure. For my money he is a solid 10 that rarely makes mistakes and I am ok with that.

It was interesting to find out Godwin was a flyhalf up to U20s, as my memories of his time at the Brumbies would be summed up by dummying then stepping back into contact, and shanked left-foot kicks.

You’re supposed to be highlighting the good things about him CH, not the bad! It's ok, once he's got Force colours on we can forget he was a Soak

I agree he was poor at the Force and his first season at the Brumbies. Yet I thought he had started playing consistently well in his second season at the Brumbies, despite the intermittent injuries that hampered him for his first season and a bit. I agree he’s a long way off achieving anything now. But I also feel he went overseas at the wrong time.

@OOP Ok I stand corrected :silly: Godwin made 1 line break that season for the Brumbies and scored an excellent try. I now challenge you to find 1 more in his previous 5 seasons for the Force.
