The Broncos' decline is no laughing matter

By Gazbo / Roar Guru

The vision of some of the Brisbane Broncos’ players having a laugh after their fifth consecutive loss to the Gold Coast Titans clearly got under the skin of some Broncos legends and fans, and justifiably so.

The bewildering thing is that this isn’t an isolated case so it begs the question, where has the win-at-all-costs mentality gone for some of the players?

Sure, it’s easy for people to say that it’s only a game, it’s not life or death. But for those players who are fiercely competitive and have a burning desire to win, losing isn’t an option for them.

If they do lose, they’re angry, upset and inconsolable, and at least this time it was evident after the Brisbane Broncos lost another match to the New Zealand Warriors with both the captain Alex Glenn and Patrick Carrigan in tears as they faced a press conference.

I know what kind of player I resonate with and I’m sure that most other passionate fans would feel exactly the same.

You want to see your team hurting and upset after a loss, not joking around and laughing with the opposition’s players.

The Brisbane Broncos are clearly in a form slump and as is always the case, the coach is now under intense scrutiny with armchair experts asking for Anthony Seibold to be sacked, never mind how most of the players performed against the Titans and the Warriors.

To see how some of the Brisbane Broncos legends reacted on social media after the Broncos’ loss to the Titans and I’m sure that they’ll react even more now after their sixth consecutive loss to the NZ Warriors. That shows how much they are hurting.

Those legends wore the Brisbane Broncos jersey with pride and passion and had nothing left in the tank when they came off the field. Those times must now seem like a distant memory for Broncos fans.

For those players who think that it’s okay to have a laugh after a loss, may I suggest to them that they do it in the confines of the inner sanctum, which is their dressing room – not out of the field in the open where their passionate fans and the media can see how little a loss means to them.

The NRL salary cap is 9.6 million. How the Broncos can mishandle the roster so badly is borderline criminal. Bow your heads in shame administrators.

It is a laughing matter. I feel for the players, but watching those eternally smug Broncos supporters cry in their morning coffee is satisfying. Very satisfying.

Yes, I agree. If the Broncos win no celebration. They have only beaten the wooden spooner in 16th position. If the Bulldogs win the Broncos are in the hurt locker. Before I see Seibold get the sack I’d like to see a few changes in the roster. Everybody is calling out Boyd and Milford with good cause. Isn’t the definition of stupidity - doing the same thing excepting a different outcome. I suggest Jake Turpin and Tom Dearden be promoted to the starting line up. Yes Hooker and Five Eighth. Seibold has said he needs to protect his emerging talent. Ok. True. So why not start the young lads against a struggling team. It’s not like they are going to be bashed by hardened inform forwards like JW Hargreaves, Josh Papalii or Darcy Lussick. As for Boyd, Sure he is great amongst the young lads with advice and insight but there is enough young talent to sideline him. Farnsworth can replace him. He can come onto the coaching staff and still advise the lads. What’s the worst that can happen. They loose?

Who cares if the Broncos are having a crappy year. I don't hear anybody complaining if any other team is having a bad year.

Hopefully someone writes a handbook for how NRL players should behave in all situations. If they laugh after a win they shouldn’t, if they rip the doors off the dressing room they get bagged. Every player is human and every human reacts to situations in different ways. If you laugh when talking to a mate after a funeral is that disrespectful to the departed? While supporters are crucial to all sports it wouldn’t matter what a player does he isn’t going to please everyone so just let them live their lives, do their thing and if they’re are no good at it drop them to reserve grade

players seem to be non-performing because they have no clue what the plan is. A blind 14 year old kid driving a Ferrari is a recipe for disaster, as is a not-coach driving a professional team.

At the very least Todd Payten and a random veteran hated by the media such as Adam Blair owed the Broncos dressing room a visit and ‘we’re all behind you’ pay it forward and all.

Call me a cynic, but I'd say the Broncos cried on cue after the criticism they rec'd after the Titans loss. They'll cry again if they lose against Parramatta. Anyway, they'll win some games, BUT this form slump started in 2019, their for & against last year was tragic. This year, they still can't score tries or defend, nothing's changed at all. Crying or laughing after a game won't fix their many problems, some of which are caused by the stupid and too generous contracts they've signed with their many non performing "star" players, compared to much lower value contracts other players are retained on.

It's not Hollywood, finally it's a Seibold game plan the players could follow.

I found the Warriors win pretty funny not as funny as the Titans win the week earlier but still worth a giggle. Seriously the way Broncos fans were complaining you would think they had been through 4 wooden spoon seasons in a row but nope just lost a few on a trot, they are lucky supporters haven't gone for basically any other club in the NRL who have suffered through a rough year or 2 or 5.

Broncos’ decline is no laughing matter. After last weeks loss the players were criticised for the after game antics of laughter and fraternising with the opposition. Clearly they were given an education during the week as on Saturday the tears were flowing for the cameras. Hollywood has come to the NRL. The Broncos need to man up.

When I saw the headline, I was worried that I wasn't allowed to laugh. Crisis averted.
