Ben Brown told to find new AFL club

By News / Wire

North Melbourne have confirmed they are open to a trade for their AFL full-forward Ben Brown.

Ben Brown’s career at North Melbourne appears to be coming to an end after the AFL club confirmed they are willing to trade for the full-forward.

The off-contract 27-year-old endured a tough 2020 campaign with loss of form and injuries resulting in just eight goals in nine games – after a career-high 64 goals last year.

Brown is a four-times leading goalkicker for the Kangaroos with 287 majors in 130 games.

“It’s not a decision we’ve made lightly as Ben has been a tremendous part of our club since 2014,” GM football Brady Rawlings told North Media.

North won just one of their last 15 games this season with the club already announcing that 11 other players – including Majak Daw – would not be offered new contracts.

Brown’s exit would be the most high-profile as coach Rhyce Shaw reshapes his list.

Rawlings said he and Shaw spoke to Brown, who is not a free agent, last Friday to discuss the club’s position.

“It was a very honest discussion,” he said.

“Ben was very mature and understood our decision.

“We will work with Ben and his management to secure a mutually beneficial outcome.”

Rawlings said that potentially trading Brown would be “difficult” for some  fans to understand but that decisions are being made in the best interests of the club.

“We have a clear plan and pathway to lead this club back to finals as quickly as possible,” he said.

It’s believed Brown rejected a new three-year deal from the Kangaroos earlier this year with the club now prepared to move on.

After winning their opening two games of the COVID-19 affected campaign this year, North only managed to avoid finishing bottom on percentage.

I think the Cats will find a way to still be up there. They have always found ways to overcome the odds and they still have solid players and find ways to bring in more talent during trade period

He may be prime now, but his prime will soon regress. Especially if injuries are an ongoing concern

nothing wrong at all yatz.apparently he wanted to stay ,obviously kangas want to trade him while he has some currency left because he wont be playing in there next premiership side,i have no problem with that.brown might go elsewhere and win a flag, kangas might get something good for him..like i said could be win win for both parties

Hub, what is wrong with a mature but not old, player such as Brown teaching and bringing on the younger new players. If the rebuild is beyond his playing life, it is too long.

kinda see where the kangas are coming from to be brutally honest, cant see them winning a flag in the next few years, obviously went paired shaped a couple years ago and thought they where better than what they are[bit like my club to be honest]can still end up a win win for all parties once the dust settles, kangas have been middle of the road for a long time, tough decisions have to be made to reach the ultimate goal.Cant comment on shaw as coach but would agree with the direction they look like going,if you cant attract good players via free agency [martin ,kelly and degoey offers] you have to go to the draft for a couple of years,my club was very similar to kangas only 2 years ago and we off loaded polec wingard howard etc etc...copped a backlashing from supporters and through the draft finished minor premiers this year, its only my opinion but i feel its the right way to go about it from where the kangas have been the last 5 or 6 years

Liam, I find it funny that you call the Cats a contender in 2021. All of he pundits picked the Cats to fall out of the eight this year and descend there on.

I would want to be playing regular finals and be in with a chance for a premiership, if I was Brown. Hindsight is a wonderful thing if Brown signed his 3 year contract extension at $750k pa. It will be interesting to see what other clubs are now prepared to offer him in a post COVID-19 environment. I suspect he will be taking a haircut with pay. He will definitely picked up by another club. In some ways North need to copy Brisbane and do a complete rebuild with their player list. North should have been more aggressive with it under Scott.

This trade is a reflection of just how miserable a place North Melbourne is at the moment. Being a champion of this club means nothing they couldn't give Boomer Harvey a fair well game, traded Petrie and now giving Ben Brown the flick. I would just feel sick being a fan of that footy club at the moment, even Rhyce Shaw's comments after losing games are delusional. Losing that many games is unacceptable by a club that use to be the toughest in the comp.

Question withdrawn: the threshold is 8 years, not 7.

Why isn't Brown a free agent? Isn't 2020 his 7th year at NM?

And,since 2017,he’s kicked 5 goals in a game 12 times. Josh Kennedy is 2nd with 10. Maybe he could tagteam with JK and each play 11 games next year… NM are using an over-and-under so they don’t miss both feet on this episode

I see it this way: Our forward line doesn't function with only Brown or only Larkey.....but when both have been together the forward line has looked far, far more dangerous and Zurhaar was able to become far more damaging. I WAS looking forward to seeing that as our basic framework going into next year.....so I'm annoyed now. How many players on our list can (or have) kick 10 goals in a game? Only one.....and we're moving him on??? .....so I'm annoyed now. And as stated elsewhere here - he was very marketable in Tassie.....in Hobart.....we've lost now the marketable story of Majak Daw......and we're pushing Brown out the door. I do wonder just how much there will be a cut to lists and to budgets for season 2021. This is my greatest concern. Just what will footy look like next year?

Hey Hedley. Didn't he want an extra year of $750k? So 4 @$750k would have been reasonable. People can recover from injury can't they?

Completely agree Pope. I don’t know what this Lamarr fella is on about. I am disappointed in North because I like them as a club and don’t want to see them spend time at the bottom. They have always been a club that bats above their weight and it is a defining part of their identity as a club. I admire them for that. It is just unfortunate what is happening and how they are changing that. Brown is one of the best forwards in the league as you pointed out, who had a bad year but that isn’t saying much since a lot of good players have been down this year. He is a grass roots player, that is North’s biggest selling point. It honestly wouldn’t seem right to see him in another team’s jumper.

So how much is worth then Pope? A Million a year? The bloke can barely train twice a week, i know because i go to training. His knees are slowly catching up with him. I love the bloke and so do North. Why do ya think he was offered $800 grand a year over three.

North are always banging on about their war chest but when it came to spending it on one of their own they couldn't bring themselves to do it. But for outsiders it's a huge mark up. If they had been chasing Cameron or Lynch they would have offered way more for blokes with very similar ave goal output to Brown. JC 2.5 BB 2.21 TL 2.01. And he doesn't have bung knees. He hurt his calf in preseason and hurt his knee (not seriously) in rd 10 or 11. The implication that he is greedy says more about North's double standards than Brown daring to think he might be worth a few quid more based on his peers receipts.

That’s right. You completely avoided the 2nd half of my comment and I even said in my first response “assuming you are referring to the players that rejected North’s offer to join them” in case you were referring to my second post but whatever, just ignore that because it means you can continue to say that what I am saying is baseless and filled with lies, which is disingenuous. You are living in denial if you think north haven’t screwed up and it is completely baffling how they would just kick a grass roots player to the curb like that. North just delisted 11 players so it isn’t like they don’t have the cap space to give him more money either. He wanted a 4 year deal, which I think is pretty reasonable given the return on investment. Big mistake by Shaw and the management. Most other North Melbourne supporters on this comment section agree too so you are the odd one out.

Disingenuous? You just ragged on a club regarding Ben Brown without any facts. I could not care less about everything else in your schoolboy post. You blamed North and you are wrong. Your like a kid with a lollipop. He was offered big money and he refused it. Just except it and move on. Do i need to be anymore clear kid?

Not really. If you read the 2nd half of my comment, you would see I brought up North's strategy and where it has gone wrong. You just conveniently disregared the 2nd half of my comment to make out what I am saying is baseless and inaccurate, which is extremely disingenuous. One thing I can't stand is someone who doesn't respond to merits of what another person is saying because they have already made their mind up on the topic. It is your job to be more clear with your comment to communicate what you are saying better otherwise. "He knocked back a 3 year deal at 2.5 mil. How on earth is this Norths fault?" Who knocked back who's offer? That could mean anything. You should get your facts straight rather than scrutinise everything I say. Ragging on a club without knowing the details? Just telling you how it is mate. Like it or lump it. North do need a reality check and everything I mentioned is a fact. They are an absolute mess now. Pull your head out of you know where and get real. It is also news to me that Brown has bung knees when he has kicked over 60 goals 3 years in a row.

Well that's irrelevant to the topic regarding Ben Brown. North did everything in their power to keep him. They went well and truly above the market value for a 27 year with bung knees. You blamed North didn't you? You even stated its an astounding decision. What's astounding is that fact North even offered that coin in the first place. You ragged on a club without even knowing the details.
