Collingwood are in for one of their most challenging AFL off-seasons as the Magpies contend with a bulging salary cap and a number of out-of-contract stars.
Compounding the misery of an embarrassing finals exit to Geelong last Saturday night, Collingwood hierarchy have the giant task of keeping some of their best talent at the club.
Electric forward Jordan De Goey, All-Australian defender Darcy Moore, leading goalkicker Brody Mihocek and emerging star Josh Daicos are all yet to re-sign with with the Pies.
Moore and Daicos, both sons of Collingwood royalty, won’t be going anywhere, but De Goey and Mihocek are eyeing upgraded deals.
De Goey is without a professional manager and has instead been assisted in contract negotiations by his father.
Speculation has linked the 24-year-old to two of the club’s fiercest rivals, Essendon and Carlton.
Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has conceded money will be the biggest factor in De Goey’s decision.
“Elements of people on his side would like to see him remunerated as well as he possibly could and we want him to be rewarded appropriately as well,” he said after the 68-point semi-final thrashing to the Cats.
Late bloomer Mihocek, who only debuted in the AFL aged 25, also wants to capitalise on his career as this may be his one and only opportunity to secure a lucrative, long-term contract.
The 27-year-old has been the Magpies’ leading goalkicker during the past two seasons and is certain to attract interest from rivals clubs should he want out.
The club had to pay up to keep dual All-Australian ruckman Brodie Grundy, who was toying with the idea of returning home to South Australia.
After penning a seven-year, multi-million dollar deal in January, Grundy was well below his All-Australian best this season.
Premiership midfielder Dayne Beams was expected to be the missing piece to another Collingwood flag after he returned to the club following the Magpies’ 2018 grand final loss.
But Beams, who still has two years to go on his contract, hasn’t played since June 2019 after stepping away from football to work on his mental health.
Adding to Collingwood’s complications is Adam Treloar’s partner Kim Ravaillion is expected to sign with the Queensland Firebirds for next year’s Super Netball season.
The star midfielder wants to stay with the Magpies but Treloar and Ravaillion have a young child together and the couple would need to separate their time between Brisbane and Melbourne.

The recent retirements of Reid, Varcoe and Dunn coupled with the delistings of Scharenberg and Broomhead have given Collingwood five spots to fill. They should bite the bullet with Beames and Langdon as neither is likely to contribute in 2021 nor 2022. That would make for 7 spots that could be filled by talent that would revitalise the group. As for De Goey, I would say he is on his way to one of the following:- Geelong, Essendon, Richmond, Melbourne or Carlton. Eight new faces and a closer look at the others so that a good dozen new faces grace our club. This should have started last year! No more sympathy votes please...

They need De Goey sorted before his court case though end October. Cant move on with our players until De Goey is done one way or the other. Essendon into him apparently. If he wants a million a year, let him go.

You’re right but in context, Mihocek is a top-up forward that to his credit has over performed, good on him I hope He gets to cash up, but he is not key position. Pies have only one key position on the park locked in, Darcy Moore CHB. Did have Grundy in ruck but his tap work is dreadful, so when picking the side I was taught to go from FB to FF. That’s one big problem.

Seen plenty of sources today that Pies have told Phillips to seek out his options. I’ve quite liked what I’ve seen from him at different stages. Broomhead and Scharenberg delisting no surprises there. Can’t believe the Pies haven’t locked in Mihochek. He’s been the best value for money playing going around. Surely you can stump up a bit cash. Especially considering the coin you paying the big American Giraffe who’s played a couple of good games of footy in his career. Still think the Pies got issues if Pendles and Side bum are in your top 5 players. Not sure your midfield is as stack as what people say. And while you’ve got the perennial Bridesmaid running the show, you won’t be tasting the ultimate success. Some coaches just don’t have it in them.

I would think everyone might not be going all in on De Goey due to court case hanging over him. I reckon once that’s squared away the action will probably start

no no im not a native of west africa & although i have a large collection of books they are most certainly not in order. mate i can & have made suggestions to individuals that perhaps they are letting emotions overflow a tad but ultimately i have no control over what they choose to post, got enough trouble keeping my own posts on the civil side of things at times. prob best just to step away sometimes & let tensions cool down, hell its not like we're discussing anything of import here, its just a bunch of footy fans shooting the breeze, however seriously some seem to take their offerings

Sven, nothing wrong with being a Liberian. Somebody need to keep the books in order. You Tiger boys need to get together. One of your hoard is out of order. This is about the sixth attack on a long term Roar member.

Treloar was never going anywhere, we know that, Moore and Mihocek will be resigned without fuss I imagine. De Goey shouldn't be given anymore than 600, definitely not the 800 thou that's been tossed around. If they traded him out for a first round pick and got Ben Brown in they would almost be better off. I imagine he De Goey will stay though.

Grundy seemed to labour so much in the 2nd half of the season - had little explosiveness / pace - I'm with Dr D's suggestion of a groin injury - could be lower back as well - given the way he's been restricted. I hadn't really thought of that before re Callum, but now I think of it, he does appear a short kick - skilled though.

I like that you want to reason with me. And implicitly, seemingly, feel you can't encourage a fellow Tiger supporter.
