Justin Langer confirms Cameron Green will debut in Adelaide - if he's fit

By Daniel Jeffrey / Editor

One of Australia’s most exciting young cricketers will earn a first Test cap on Thursday – as long as he’s passed fit to play.

Coach Justin Langer has confirmed Cameron Green will make his Test debut against India in Adelaide, but the young all-rounder first has to be cleared by medical staff after being forced out of the last Australia A game due to concussion.

“If he’s passed fit he’ll definitely play,” Langer said on Tuesday morning.

“We’re just going through the concussion protocols. We all saw it was a very unusual incident that happened with him.”

Green was struck in the head while bowling by a Jasprit Bumrah drive last Friday, but the Australian camp are confident the 21-year-old will be right to play in two days’ time.

“If Cameron gets through the protocols and he gets through training and he feels good, [he will play]. I’ve seen him last night, he had a big smile on his face, he had another test this morning that we got good news,” Langer said.

“He’s a terrific young bloke, he’s obviously an excellent talent, he’s earned the right for selection through his performances through Sheffield Shield cricket.

“If he’s fit and available then he’ll make his Test debut, which is very, very exciting for Australian cricket, for him and his family.”

Langer also gave some clarification about who will appear at the top of the order for Australia, but stopped short of revealing the full XI.

Despite some speculation he could be moved up to open the batting, Marnus Labuschagne will remain at first drop, leaving Joe Burns, Marcus Harris and Matthew Wade as the contenders to face the new ball. Langer said they will decide on who opens in the next couple of days.

Wade, a constant in the middle order since last year’s Ashes, has never opened at Test level but has done the job frequently in white-ball cricket, while Harris has made his case for selection with 355 runs at 118 to start the Sheffield Shield season.

Burns, on the other hand, hardly has a recent run to his name. The Queenslander managed only 57 runs across five Shield innings before scores of 4, 0, 0 and 1 against the Indians in the two tour games.

Despite being the incumbent opener, he now appears a considerable long-shot to play in Adelaide, although his case has been boosted recently with the likes of Ricky Ponting and Brad Haddin calling for his inclusion in the team.

If Green isn’t fit in time for the series opener, Wade could stay at number six or still move atop the order to accommodate Moises Henriques in the middle. The NSW all-rounder was added to the Test squad yesterday as cover for the injured Sean Abbott, however would be a like-for-like replacement for Green if the latter is unavailable.

Guess we'll find out tomorrow - I hope he succeeds for his sake and Australia's sake - it happens sometimes - players have a horrible run of form and then all of a sudden it returns when the player and the team needs it most

He has had good Test record, so he has proved himself. Everyone suddenly thinking Shield form is important when it is a player they don't rate is interesting. If Warner went on the same run it would be fobbed off as nothing.

That’s a fair assessment. But hopefully selectors remember a number of those innings were chasing fast runs etc when looking at the numbers over-all. Recently with Warner, Smith, Labs making runs regularly Head hasn’t always been coming in with a mountain of time to make big milestones in a bunch of those 26 innings.

Who knows when the hell he'll make his test debut. He's got to be able to handle bouncers at Test level though.

Harris is still developing. He's 28 so should be approaching his peak but the onus will be on him to overcome any such plans. That's why it's test cricket. What more can you ask of him after his shield numbers? I forgot to add Bancroft, Renshaw and Finch to the list as players who have opened for Aus recently in tests

Indeed, but he hasnt helped himself since 2017 with some truly mediocre performances.

I think they do value Shield performances. It's more that the general thought is, if a player is doing reasonably well in test cricket, then coming back to Shield level and having a few bad games shouldn't see them dropped from the test team. Of course, middling test performances a year ago versus averaging 6 from 9 innings in first class cricket so far this season is very different from doing well in test cricket as recently as a couple of months ago, on top of an overall good test record and has a bad trot of 3-4 innings of Shield cricket to start the summer. That's the problem. Using his incumbency or decent test record in his favour when all those tests were played so long ago, and the most recent tests played he didn't do all that great, and the opposition was much weaker anyway.

If it's Wade and Harris opening, and they do similar to each other or Wade outdoes Harris, then Wade stays, Harris goes I reckon. If Wade fails and Harris smacks a hundred, then it could be curtains for Wade. I don't know that Wade brings the right sort of balance to an opening partnership with Warner, but neither does Harris.

ALthough it should be remembered Waugh picked him over Shane Warne once.

Interesting to see how this pink ball will perform. Seems they had a problem keeping the seam firm before. Off memory last series it did very little. Starc seems to struggle when the ball is not moving. But if it is moving about he should definitely be in.

Bailey coming in to the selection team was meant to rectify this very problem - which was something that was infuriating domestic cricketers, who didn't know what they needed to do to get picked. For mine I think Trevor Hohns should be replaced as the Chairman of Selectors - he was the leader of the old selection committee that had this idea that domestic form counts for nothing. In this case I'm not sure if Hohns was behind the reselection of Burns or if it was Langer. But Khawaja and the likes who have got runs on the board will probably be less than impressed.

Good points there but I don't quite agree with your appraisal of Wade. I thought his hundred in the face of a Jofra Archer onslaught was one of the great modern Ashes innings. But agreed, Wade does need a few more of top innings in very little time to have any sort of prospect of a longer career.

Not only should Burns be behind Wade, but in my uninformed and inconsequential view, he should also be behind Khawaja, Marsh and Renshaw. How they can justify his inclusion is beyond me. I thought the old Hohns/Chappell doctrine that you just ignored Shield performances went out the window when Bailey came into the selection committee. If they want to show domestic players they have changed their ways then they should be sticking to players who are either solid in their international performances or outstanding performers in Shield cricket.

Quantity not low perhaps, but low on quality. When there are no stand out selections to replace a 32 year old and a test debutant, our stocks are low. Instead we are using a makeshift opener and one who has been tried and subsequently failed several times. The Indians have Harris worked out. He fell right into the trap they set for him on the weekend.

Burns has had numerous chances to prove himself this summer and failed every time. The selectors would be foolish to choose him.

I agree that Head is far from secure, but Head and Wade are in quite different positions. Head is more of a long term prospect. Feels like he's been around for ages but he's still only 26. Which allows for two possibilities, one being that they are more likely to hold onto him and give him more time than they would Wade, the other being that they've got time with him, so if he misses a year of test cricket he could still come back. But I still have this strong suspicion that the selectors are really trying to give him every chance to show he can be a good test batsman, because they really like him as a leader (clearly he's thought of in that way having been picked to captain SA since before he'd scored a first class hundred) and really hope that by the time Paine retires, Head is secure enough in the team to be the next captain. That being said, if he simply isn't up to it they'd have to look elsewhere. But I seriously believe that's the end-game with Head.

Sam Whiteman scored 118 v Tasmania (decent attack), 114 v NSW (quality), 110 v QLD (solid attack again) plus 3 half centuries. I can't see how we are not discussing him?
