What are the best rugby podcasts?

By pm / Roar Rookie

I’m a big podcast-listener, so whatever I’m into I’ll usually find a few good podcasts to listen to on it.

About a year ago I felt like there was a real dearth of rugby pods, but I’ve gradually got hold of a few good ones.

If you happen to not already be a podcast-listener but are interested, most pods are accessible to listen to live on Apple/iTunes, Google podcasts or other download platforms or on streaming sites like Spotify or Deezer.

A lot of them can be accessed as video too on Youtube. So you can listen live or download to listen to later offline.

Here I’ll link to Google Podcasts cause that’s what i use, but you can find all these on multiple platforms.

So here are a few I’d recommend:

The Super Rugby Podcast
My personal favourite, this is lighthearted, enjoyable and lots of fun. The presenters have a great rapport, humour, as well as being informative and insightful. A couple of Kiwi friends and ex-players, Damien Warren and Toby Harris, who seem to be based in England these days, host it.

The Rugby Ruckus Podcast
Journalist Ben Kimber and ex-Wallaby Morgan Turinui host what feels to me like the number one Aussie rugby pod.

Informed, opinionated discussion and analysis with some famous guests dropping in often enough. Often a confusing 10-15 second silence before it starts, so don’t turn it up too loud!

The Eggchasers Rugby Podcast
I’m not a big enough follower of British and European rugby to listen to this regularly but I dip in now and again, mainly when there are Tests being played. Seems like a smart, balanced pod.

The Good, the Bad and the Rugby
Recently started Pod with big-name guests from all over. Hosted by affable posh bloke Alex Payne, with James Haskell and Mike Tindall as regulars.

Very English vibe, but not too much so. Focused more on the personalities and stories behind the game rather than match-analysis. Worth a listen.

Pick and Drive RugbyNot a regular enough listen of mine yet, but a well run, worthwhile Aussie show with a focus on the latest news from the rugby world, and close analysis of the Wallabies and all things Aussie rugby.

A few good ones I’ve missed no doubt, that you might want to recommend for your commute, jog or whatever.

Actually feel sorry for Chris Jones with that lot, although he falls more into the cheerleader than analyst category himself. So many excuses from these guy its unreal. Will give your Overlap Rugby a go over the year end.

The rugby ruckus is really good. Morgan’s analysis is superb. Learnt a lot from listening to this podcast. Great insights and some great guests.

Phil on the Eggchasers is great. He really knows his stuff. The other two I don't have much time for.

I have added the 42 to my list as well Mz, balanced views, good analysis The 42s Mark Kinsella is a top-notch punter. One of the few pundits out there who actually watch a lot of rugby from both hemispheres. Goode knows his code, Hamilton just doesn’t. 100 percent correct! Rugby Union Weekly – these guys must just watch different games to me, widely parochial Especially Ugo Monye and Chris Ashton are really annoying to listen to. Chris Jones and Danny Care are alright tho.

I have added the 42 to my list as well Mz, balanced views, good analysis Also added Aotearoa Rugby this year but it can be a little too, “praise your mates”, on occasion, analysis is good Rugby Ruckus rounds out the best of the real rugby pods Pods on the slide downwards, Will Greenwood - a foot every side of every political fence, no nuts Super Rugby - 2 kiwis with more rugby errors per minute than anyone else I think, no idea, yo7 will find better views in the public bar of any kiwi pub. Rugby Pod - Entertainment only, and a base level at that. Goode knows his code, Hamilton just doesn’t. Rugby Union Weekly - these guys must just watch different games to me, widely parochial

Nice recommendations there, pm- definitely second the 'Rugby Ruckus' podcast, I really enjoyed Tirinui's analysis of the all the matches over the Tri Nations and Bledisloes. Also agree with the plugs from Sheepie and TNVFS for the 'Aussie rugby show' and 'Overlap Rugby', very different shows but worth a watch. I'd throw in both the 'Aotearoa Rugby Pod' (Rugby Pass Official) with Bryn Hall and James Parsons, for a good insight into rugby matches from a Kiwi point of view and the 'Rugby Pod' with Jim Hamilton has some interesting podcasts.

Some good recommendations here, I'll follow up, particularly Aussie ones. As currently exiled in UK, I like The Ruck and Eggchasers (most of it). As has been said, Le French Rugby is really interesting and probably my favourite at the moment. As Hugh says, USA has some good ones and MLR is setting up for a good season, Rugby Wrap Up the best, I reckon. I have even been listening to Le Rouge Rugby from Canada, a lot about MLR and Toronto Arrows but good to get a Tier 2 perspective

Le French Rugby is real quality. English language podcast about the Top 14 hosted by "[r]ecently retired former France international Benjamin Kayser & Scotland international Johnnie Beattie." They have top shelf guests, and don't hold back on their opinions about players, owners, refs, or execs. A great listen.

Thanks for including us (Pick and Drive) on this list! Honestly, Mitch and I started the pod because we found that there weren't enough quality, weekly, Aussie rugby podcasts at the start of the season. We'll be revamping things in 2021 so keep an ear out :) GAGR were far too irregular (though fantastic), the Rugby Report Card (affiliated with GAGR) swear every second word and I'm not keen on my 5yo listening to that, and I found the Fox Rugby podcast far too 'matey'. Sad that GAGR and The Aussie Rugby show have now finished up. I'd also recommend you check our Rugby Fixation, Mitch Evans and his brother have some good insights and love their stats!

Overlap Rugby: Two Irish brothers who watch a lot of rugby from both hemispheres. They are brilliant, humble, fair, and pretty funny. The Ruck: The Times Stephen Jones is good fun to listen to, even when he is wrong. Stuart Barnes, Lawrence Dallaglio, and Owen Slot add extra depth and banter. GAGR: Best place to go to get proper in-depth knowledge about Aussie rugby.

Am a big podcast listener, there are so many rugby podcasts, there are 3 on the Shute Shield. Always listened to The Aussie Rugby Show and the 2 GAGR pods – my older boys love The Rugby Report Card. For most pods it depends on the episode and who they have on whether I listen to it – quite like Rugby Nation with Nick Mccardle. The WA boys do a pretty parochial one, Rugby Wrap, which is quite good. Post World Cup I haven't listened to too many from the UK. With the Aussies going to the MLR have got into the USA ones, Rugby Hive, MLR Kick Off, Rugby Wrap Up, Earful of Dirt and Red, White & Black Eye - they are a mixed bunch - just amazing that there are at least 5 pods. Am enjoying ref Wayne Barnes’ 5 min explanation of the laws on Youtube – using his kids’ toys as the players.

Thanks for this article. I've been enjoying the Rugby Bricks podcast. A good mix of current and former internationals and coaches, talk of preparation, technique, coaching etc. Sometimes a bit of a focus on kicking but mostly an enjoyable chat to listen to. And quite timeless because it's not about current results, so it's good to listen back to old ones.
