Stan Sport reveals subscription cost ahead of Super Rugby season

By The Roar / Editor

The Sydney Morning Herald – co-owned by the owners of Stan, Channel Nine – has today revealed the pricing plans for the new Stan Sport service set to launch soon.

The new streaming service, which must be subscribed to in addition to Stan, will cost an additional $10 per month on top of the existing $10 monthly Stan subscription cost.

That means rugby fans will be able to watch every match of the Super Rugby season, plus Wallabies Tests, for $20 a month all up. Like other sports streaming services, the coverage will be live and ad-free during play.

The news comes as a welcome surprise, with many insiders predicting the service would cost at least an additional $15 per month, driving the total monthly cost as high as $25 or $30.

But the Herald’s Sam Phillips today revealed that sources had told the paper the figure would be lower.

A Stan subscription also includes live coverage of the upcoming French Open and Wimbledon tournaments, while industry rumblings claim Nine and Stan are pursuing other events and competitions to add to Stan Sports’ library – including other rugby competitions like the Shute Shield or GPS schools competitions.

Stan Sport is expected to launch closer to Super Rugby’s 2021 kick-off date of February 19 and a Stan subscription is required to subscribe to the add-on service.

So when is Stan Sport actually being launched? Two Currie Cup semifinals and a final and nowhere to watch it legally in Australia?!

Stan just as good as Netflix??? That’s a lie and a half, there’s a reason Netflix is miles ahead of Stan in Aussie subs

Good news. Just quietly though, who named this service? Stan? Really? Think they must have the same marketing company as "Rugby AU"

I think EOYT is seperate though (though they are likely to secure) I believe it includes all SANZAAR home content with the exception of Lions Tours.

I have Netflix, Stan, Prime and Binge and went halves in a Kayo subscription year round so I’m basically in the same position as I already was.

I find it good for TV and movies that aren’t new releases. Amazon I definitely think is best for newer movies. Personally I rate Stan over Binge and on par to better than Netflix.

TWAS Stan used to be good but they are now what can only be described as the "Weekly" section of your old video library...

I kept Foxtel until I got a free three months Kayo subscription from SportsBet. Trialled Kayo, was fine, got rid of Foxtel. Will probably get rid of Kayo as well. In thanks to Channel 9, I even used the money saved to get my SMH subscription back.

I'll echo Dwards. Pure streaming, no ads. Plenty of content from most channels ranging from Discovery, Nat Geo and History in addition to Fox8, Sci-fi etc as well as plenty of movies. I binged Seasons 4-7 of The Curse of Oak Island and have moved The West Wing. It uses the platform as Kayo, if you have a password for one you can use it for the other.

The EOYT matches have always been separate from the SANZAR matches, so it remains to be seen whether Nine bids for the non-Wallabies games. Or, for that matter, whether Foxtel is prepared to bid for those matches in isolation from all other Rugby Union content.
