Dragons players need to be like Ben Hunt

By Owen Neidhart / Roar Rookie

The Dragons players need to follow the example of their captain, Ben Hunt. To say the current situation is disappointing is a massive understatement.

The Dragons were considered wooden spoon contenders at the start of the year.

A new coach, a new captain and a season-ending injury to Cameron McInnes didn’t place a lot of confidence in even the most rusted-on fan. Yet, despite the odds, they found themselves in the eight.

The run home after beating the Warriors in golden point meant there was a chance of playing finals.

The game earlier in the year when beat Parramatta showed that on any given day, if they played to their potential, they could really give the competition a shake.

Then the BBQ happened – a simple sausage sizzle, no doubt, with a couple of beers too.

Except, it should never have happened.

In fact, they were told to enjoy the win, but don’t do anything stupid.

By way of full disclosure, I have to admit that I was born in the Illawarra and have been a St George fan all my life.

The Steelers were always my second team, so when the merge happened it was perfect. I have been through the highs and lows but have never doubted my support, until now.

Sports opinion delivered daily

I had issue with the appointment of Anthony Griffin. My concerns were heightened when he tapped a couple of stars on the shoulder and said they weren’t in the long-term plans.

Assuring the media that those decisions had nothing to do with attitude, the question had to be asked why you would let them go.

The events of the infamous BBQ have shown that Hook is a good judge of character, while not wanting to rubbish the players in public.

Hook chose Ben Hunt as captain and many wondered why. For the record, I’ve always supported that call as I’ve been a Ben Hunt fan for a long time.

It wasn’t just a C beside his name, he was finally able to lead the team around the park and set the standards. That’s why the Dragons players need to follow the lead of their captain.

Not the dumb Hunt who dropped the ball in the grand final and cost the Broncos a premiership, but the smart Hunt who realised that the Broncos were throwing support behind Anthony Milford.

Taking the money and opportunity that the Dragons offered was a good call.

His good judgement in not being at the BBQ shows the leader that he is.

He wasn’t the Hunt who threw the BBQ, he wasn’t the Hunt who hid under a bed, he wasn’t the Hunt who ran five kilometres home and he wasn’t the Hunt who left his wallet and car at the scene.

So the Dragons players need to stop being a bunch of dumb Hunts, and instead be a bunch of smart Hunts.

That story is so funny. He must've had a lighter and a packet of cigarettes in his pocket as well. Don MacKinnon once had a slash out on the field but no one could better Puig Aubert for theatrics. I started playing as a twelve year old who had shot up in the last year so I got to play prop. I later moved to the second row but I had to play front row whenever our injury prone prop was injured. I filled in for injured backs too but we lost all our finals games when I played centre or 5/8. No wonder the four tackle rule was changed to six. Handovers came later to improve things too. I still hayt golden point.

I've got to lighten up and return to looking at the bright side of life. For me life is full of shyte these last three years since I've had a colostomy bag but I've got to look at it as a good thing that saved my life. Go Dragons.

I really like Hunt and whilst not quite in the $1m player category, he has been head and shoulder above most Dragons players in terms of effort. Considering he’s had to do Corey Normans tackling, he’s gone OK.

Hunt along with Sims & McCullough weren’t there because of potential Origin call up. Would be interesting if Hunt was aware of the BBQ & didn’t take any action. Perhaps this will come out at some point. As for needing more players like Hunt? You can’t be serious. We just got rid of two over paid pretenders in Norman & Vaughan. Perhaps if Hunt was on $600K I’d be more forgiving but at $1M he’s been a total bust. Worst signing in JV history. All he’s going to be doing for the next 2 seasons is holding back Amone or Sullivan from first grade. If we lose one of those guys because of Hunt I’ll be livid.

Hi Tim, Agree that is wasn't his fault for the loss. I was just lining up a bit of comic relief toward the end of the article. Hopefully the Dragons can use this as motivation to have a run at the finals.

I wonder if Gorton learned that from watching Puig Aubert, the brilliant French fullback. There's all sorts of stories about him smoking on the field during a game and one where he was taking a kick at goal from a long way out. He put the ball on the ground went back a few paces, then reached into his sock to comb his hair before banging it over. The 4 tackle rule must have gone so close to killing off the game. I get why the administrators introduced it, but the rule made for some really boring football, unless you liked scrums of course.

Good one, Paul. There was also a Saints winger, Speedy Stan Gorton, who took a comb onto the field for use after every run. Stan played in the four tackle rule that had too many scrums (after every fourth tackle) and too many field goals that meant wingers were starved of possession.

isn't Hunt still hiding in Vaughan's basement?

As a retired front rower, I thought the wingers golden rule was to never get their pants dirty.

I was thinking along the lines of whether, as captain, he advised the players against the BBQ.

Yes that would've done the trick. I was watching the grand final with a Broncos fan but everybody else was hoping for a Cowboys win. The winger's golden rule should be - Trust your centre to make the tackle and stay on your opposite number.

If Corey Oates had stayed on his wing we would have won. No one ever talks about that

Hunt was in camp, that saved him from the BBQ.. And yes, he has been in very good form this year, but while I haven't thrown as much trash at him as some over the past few years, he's hardly been setting the world on fire since his arrival. He's finally earning some of his big bucks, but a better stand as captain would have been - and surely he knew this was on - to have told those knuckleheads to listen to instructions and not be there.

Hi Marcus, I've been a Saints fan since 1964 and I'm feeling shock at the recent Dragons stupidity and I agree Ben Hunt is a shining light in all the gloom but I disagree with your statement about the dumb Hunt. Hunt dropped a ball but that wasn't what lost the Broncos the game it was the Cowboys scoring the late try. It was a close exciting game but if the Broncos had stopped the Cowboys scoring the try they would've been the premiers. They were lucky that the great Johnathon Thurston missed the conversion but the grand final, being such an important game, should never have been allowed to be settled by the ridiculous Golden Point. It's bad enough that it is used in the rounds to quash a valid result but a drawn grand final or any drawn finals game should have at least 5 minutes each way extra time. The grand final was ruined by Golden Point and you should blame the NRL not Ben Hunt. Drawn finals games have, as far as I can remember, always been settled by extra time and the NRL were to blame for the grand final debacle. Golden point is rubbish at any time but to use it in the grand final was gross incompetence. There was also the two referees ruining the 2018 grand final and the silly restart rule that suggests the NRL is being run by clowns.

Great last line Marcus. It will certainly be interesting to see how all the Dragon players respond next week. Hunt will have a real job on his hands, lifting the guys who will play the next 4 rounds, given the number of guys who will be suspended over that period. Now is a time for tough talking from him. If players don't want to put in the effort on game day, he needs to really put a rocket up them. No more Mr Nice Guy, Ben.

I would like to think that he is Capt and about to go into Origin camp the following day would weigh more heavily than a BBQ.

I hope Griffin’s not thinking of signing Milford. I think Hunt’s ok as captain, but i wonder if he got an invite to the BBQ.
