Gamble pushes case for 2022 halfback role

By News / Wire

Brisbane halfback Tyson Gamble says he will fight “tooth and nail” for the halfback jersey next season, after delivering one of his finest performances in a 37-18 derby win over North Queensland.

Gamble’s direction and communication was imperative to the Broncos’ domination of the Cowboys on Friday, assisting in three tries as his side registered their fifth win of the season.

With South Sydney star Adam Reynolds a shoo-in for the number seven jumper next year, coach Kevin Walters says he sees Gamble as a high chance to partner him.

“Certainly. He’s a competitive guy and a big strong body, I love his competitive nature more than anything,” Walters said.

“He’s got a few rough edges around him but I like his competitiveness and he’s doing a good job for us.

“He’s worked hard to get to where he is, he’s one of those guys that have bounced around a few clubs and hasn’t been handed the golden run. So he’s working really hard, which we’re really happy with.

“He likes directing the opposition as well, which is something we’re trying to get out of his game.”

Gamble told reporters he rated the derby win as one of the best in his career and he hopes to continue delivering for the Broncos in years to come.

“This has been my first really full year in the NRL and I’m loving every second of it,” he said.

“I know Adam’s (Reynolds) coming next year and he’s obviously pretty much guaranteed that spot and I absolutely would love nothing more than to be partnering him in the halves.

“There’s obviously a lot of competition there with Crofty (Brodie Croft) still being at the club, Kotoni’s (Staggs) name has been thrown around for the six jersey but I’m always down for competition.

“I’m 110 per cent in for a battle and I’ll fight tooth and nail to get that six jersey. That’s just part of my nature and who I am.”

Did someone forget Adam Reynolds is the marquee signing for 2022. Gamble has enough skills and determination to give the 5/8 role a go. With a full preseason he will be much improved.

He struggles laterally against outside backs and halves but can hit and does make some great last minute tackles. It is worth trying him at lock to get some ball playing there, thou Hetherington is quality there

Next year the halves will consist of Reynolds, Gamble, Mam, maybe Kelly and it seems Staggs. I would rather see Reynolds and Gamble be the starting halves with Mam off the bench at times during the year. The new rules should see centres get more money as good ones are real strike weapons now, like they used to be before wrestle ball.

It is relative to the Bronco's recent historical efforts. Gamble and his team-mates are usually playing at 50% rat power, so when he says "I'm going to give 110%", they layman would halve that number. He really means 55%, or in Millennial speak, "having a red-hot go".

Firstly, Walters shouldn’t be jumping with joy or making any prediction with the Broncs dismal record of 5 wins from 19 games and a record of; for 331 points, against 578 points and a diff of – -247 points. IMO Gamble’s lip is the most worrying aspect(s) of his game and which btw was apparent right from when he started in the NRL, his niggly and especially unnecessary annoyances which gives away penalties which in most instances causes a negative result for the Broncs is the thing that he should consentrate on! With Reynolds joining the ranks of the Broncs, Gamble will have to forget about a halfback role and concentrate on either a new 5/8th role or wherever else which will be a totally different to what Gamble is doing today.

John Allan, given you don't understand the concept of 110%, I'll explain it for you and other roosters supporters to understand ; - The roosters salary cap, is always greater than 100%. The sombrero is at least 110% bigger than an average sized-cap

As an “older citizen”, I always chuckle when I hear the term “giving 110%” as I thought it was a mathematical impossibility. Perhaps times have changed over the years however even the smartest kids at my school never achieved more than 100% in their exams.

If his competitors are Croft, Hunt and Kelly he’s a shoo in.

Whatever the opinion about how Gamble goes about his business he is the best 5/8 option Brisbane have. His greatest skill is the one thing they haven't had in a long while- direction and talk. He was better last night at positioning his big man on little man and giving it to Staggs with space. I don't mind his 'enthusiasm' but he has to continue to get better. I can't see Kevvie moving Staggs in for the sake of it. Sure, train there and develop a kicking and passing game. Cover there if/when injury occurs but he is such a powerful beast in the centers, it would lessen two positions to move him in too early.

Did you watch the game before this one? When the Tigers come out and say they support Brooks, then he puts in a perfomance like that, he'll be in SL next year.

He was better last night than previous weeks evidenced by everyone talking Staggs up again. Dunno about a forward though, the toughest thing about him is his lip. :stoked:

His passes to Staggs and Riki last night were pretty effective.

Would be in the forwards if he could tackle. Of all the halfbacks in the NRL I think he would be my last choice.
