Tigers can bounce back in 2022: Hardwick

By Shayne Hope / Wire

Richmond’s dream of an AFL premiership hat-trick is in tatters – but coach Damien Hardwick is bullish about the power club’s chances of bouncing back into contention next season.

Only a highly unlikely series of results going their way can keep the Tigers in the hunt in 2021, following Friday night’s comprehensive 39-point defeat to GWS.

It was the Tigers’ seventh loss in their last nine games, killing off any realistic hopes of a top-eight berth.

The sobering scenario comes at the back end of a campaign when Richmond have struggled to cope with a weight of injuries to senior players, including superstar Dustin Martin, who had his season cut short by a lacerated kidney.

The Tigers have also had their collective hunger questioned after enjoying a period of sustained success, claiming three flags in a golden run over the previous four years.

But with a strong senior core and talented wave of youngsters coming through, as well as a solid draft hand, Hardwick is confident Richmond can rebound quickly.

Without finals to play, they will also have the benefit of a longer off-season for the first time in five years.

“When we have a good pre-season, I think we’ll be a hell of a lot better,” Hardwick said after the loss to GWS.

“It’s been a tough road; three out of the last four years we’ve been deep in September and this year’s been as hard as it’s ever been.

“Whoever wins it this year is going to have an enormous tick beside their name.

“But if our guys do refresh, we regenerate a couple of things and get some young talent in, invest in the talent we’ve already got, I think we’ll be reasonably placed to have another crack.”

Veteran defender Bachar Houli is out of contract and keen to play on next season but is no certainty to be offered a new deal.

Richmond will have to refresh their list to some extent and Hardwick refused to be drawn on the 33-year-old triple premiership star’s future.

“He’s a very good player, he’s been a fantastic player for us and we’ll continue to work through with Bachar and his management what that looks like for next year,” Hardwick said.

As it stands, the Tigers have picks 12, 15, 22, 31, 45 and 49 in the national draft.

well u correctly state this years norm smith winner is yet to be decided & dusty wont be a candidate (wow, 2 correct statements in a row from u don, must be some sorta record), however i said dusty is the reigning norm smith holder, look up reigning in the dictionary it should clear it up for ya …… youre confused again, i have never listed our best 22 injured or not, u seem to have difficulty grasping that other tiges fans statements & opinions arent necessarily the same as mine … before he was injured soldo was teaming up nicely with nank, whether thats the case next year remains to be seen … btw u ignored my question re houli, u claim to know richmond, heres your chance to prove it

The Norm Smith hasn't been decided yet and he won't be a candidate. Who would you play Soldo ahead of? Nank, CCJ? Chol? When you listed Richmond best 22 injured, you had 4 rucks in it. Which would you chose? They're all off the pace.

yeah dusty is really done, i mean he’s only the reigning norm smith medallist, was near BOG playing mostly midfield v port in the prelim … he’s done for the year don so u need not torture yourself about dusty for a bit, plus you’ll look less clueless if u just let go with this infatuation u have about him …. soldo is a spud, he was only getting a game with the premier team, pretty sure broad would be playing the role asked of him but hey u prob know better … so tell us don, is houli finally back playing this week seeing u declared him to be fit 3-4 weeks back ?

Martin has been out of form all season and hasn't played in the midfield for two years. Nearing the end. Soldo is not AFL level. Broad is a loose 3rd defender. Balta is a gun. That's the answer...but your question is unclear.

Three key defenders out. Big young ruck out. Plenty of mobile small forwards. Even with Martin and McIntosh back and Prestia with a good preseason they could still do with a bit of lift in their mids with a talented kid ..or two. So many kids there that were not getting a game , because of their success , may have to make room for something different particularly a good size third forward. The rest will mentally do them good. Been a while without finals pressure

Four of the regular back six out last night: Houli, Broad, Astbury, Balta exposed the defence. More of a worry has been the lack of scoring, the last four first halves have yielded just: 1, 1, 2 & 4 goals. Richmond’s brand was forward half pressure but we’ve discarded the players who built that: Townsend, Butler, Higgins and of the ones we retained: Rioli & Castagna seem to have lost their mojo. I’d say only Graham and Bolton have enhanced their reputations this year. Bachar & Cotch have been the soul of the club but age has caught up with them. I think the kids need another season. 2023 might be our next shot.

I really would love to believe the proposition that, with the squad heading into pre-season fresh and injured players returning, the Tiges can press again next season. Time will tell. A few troubling signs though. Reiwoldt must be getting close to hanging up the boots. Lynch is either carrying an injury or has peaked - when he held a contested mark last night I nearly choked on my red wine. I'm not convinced he can step up to cover Jack. Grimes gives the impression that he has a full life outside football - I wonder whether he might be a surprise retirement. Cotchin is not done but he needs to adjust his game (his game in the twilight of his career is more akin to Shaun Higgins than elite mid). Edwards has defied time as well as any player in the game but the corrosion is becoming more evident. Houli has lost a yard or two. That is a pretty serious core. But it's not all bad. Bolton and Graham have gotten better and are very good. Short is capable, Baker is a goer, and Rioli seems to be settling into a defensive role. Balta, Broad and Soldo will be welcome returns. Hopefully we can keep Prestia on the park and help Stack fulfill his significant potential. Chol is worth persisting with but he's no defender. Some of the younger guys are ok but its patchy. The tiges reliance on system which some of you loathed (but I found thrilling) depended upon all players fully understanding and commiting to their roles. The whole became so much more than the sum of its parts. But the engine has misfired all year and its not clear that a few simple adjustments will get it humming again.

Difference is Tigers won a Premiership- Cats didn’t. Not only that they went back to back, something the Cats haven’t done. In fact they went deep into finals for the last 4 years unlike all those teams you mentioned.

Don't tease me Chanon .Clarkson at Geelong would be sensational imagine Kennetts reaction .Scott tries to be too smart every final series so I'm dreading this year's installment .Recent examples not playing a regular ruckman on Brodie Grundy in 2019 , no Blicavs on Lynch 2019 and last year Kolodashnij on Martin when Stewart or Bews should have .

Coming off shortened period between seasons. Is that why the Tigers are going to miss the 8? FYI, Geelong, Brisbane & Port did as well.
