Enough! Flares are an explosive device, dangerous to all. Lifetime bans for anyone bringing them to an event, whether a game or watching the Socceroos at Fed Sq. If that doesn’t work, shutdown the active fan zones. I want to be able to bring my family to the football without fear.

Exactly the same happened to the Melb Stars against Perth in the Women’s Big Bash on Thursday where the ball ran away for 4 “byes” after hitting the stumps on a free hit, effectively giving Perth the win. Personally I love watching the BBL in the evening after a day’s test cricket. I think have the two forms run in parallel is fine. The changes I would make:
1) Shorten the season to 4 weeks;
2) Align that window so that the internationals are available for the duration. I hate it when my favourite overseas players disappear during the run to the finals.
4) Top 4 only to the finals, straight to semis.

Four of the regular back six out last night: Houli, Broad, Astbury, Balta exposed the defence. More of a worry has been the lack of scoring, the last four first halves have yielded just: 1, 1, 2 & 4 goals. Richmond’s brand was forward half pressure but we’ve discarded the players who built that: Townsend, Butler, Higgins and of the ones we retained: Rioli & Castagna seem to have lost their mojo. I’d say only Graham and Bolton have enhanced their reputations this year. Bachar & Cotch have been the soul of the club but age has caught up with them. I think the kids need another season. 2023 might be our next shot.

The AFL ditched its state of origin because the clubs and the fans refused to relegate the regular season to second tier status. The other issue was that only three AFL states were competitive at Origin level; not good messaging when you are branding yourself as a national competition. The NRL’s elevation of origin, signals to me, that they believe there are only three matches of League a year that really matter and that they are the exclusive domain of the two states comprising the NQRL, the NSW, Queensland Rugby League.

Simply a recipe to strengthen the Sydney teams at the expense of the non Sydney ones. As the non Sydney conference inevitably weakened over subsequent years, Sydney would push for cross conference finals to allow for a competitive, hopefully all-Sydney, Grand Final. It’s time to base AA selection on the full season, not just the home and away games. If that gives an advantage to players that make finals, then that is exactly right. Ignoring the best footballer of the of the last two finals series and back to back Norm Smith medalist from the list of the best 22 players in the land is untenable. If you were picking a team tomorrow to play for your life would you really select Jack Steele, Taylor Adams or Caleb Daniel ahead of Dusty?

Transcendent individuals in a team sport can be a two edged sword. I always had the impression that Jordan was aloof from the other Bulls, regarding them as his supporting cast. That is not the view I have of Martin, who seems to delight in bringing his team-mates into the game.
