Great writing Ben. I went through the same despair/ certainty journey except my belief kicked in with the Maxwell miracle. Not so much because they won but because they were having fun. Cummings seemed to spend his time at the crease just laughing and smiling, whilst the weight and wait of expectation grew on India.

I knew Australia's bunch of 'no-hopers' couldn't win the World Cup, right up until I knew they would

Three generations of my family were MV members and Archie Thompson was our favourite sportsman. However after a while we felt it wasn’t a safe environment for kids, women and elderly, which ruled most of us out.

Yep. The presence of the buckets, to me, is a tacit acceptance of flares being brought in. Name another entertainment where explosives in the audience is tolerated.

How is it possible to smuggle flares and metal buckets full of chalk into games anyway.

Enough! Flares are an explosive device, dangerous to all. Lifetime bans for anyone bringing them to an event, whether a game or watching the Socceroos at Fed Sq. If that doesn’t work, shutdown the active fan zones. I want to be able to bring my family to the football without fear.

Exactly the same happened to the Melb Stars against Perth in the Women’s Big Bash on Thursday where the ball ran away for 4 “byes” after hitting the stumps on a free hit, effectively giving Perth the win. But fair enough if you bowl a no ball. (Sutherland bowled 2 in that 16th over.) To be fair to the keepers though the runs should be categorised as leg-byes.

One of cricket's dumbest rules helped India stun Pakistan. It needs to be fixed, and fast

Imagine how well they’ll go when they get a decent manager. One so good, we’d allow to coach the Socceroos, unhindered and empowered! 😉

Cloud 9: Ange's Celtic put on the style to warm up for Rangers with record 9-0 win

In truth I tell you, no prophet is ever accepted in his own country. – Luke 4:24
What a loss to Australian football.

In Ange they trust: Postecoglou's Celtic lift Scottish title

Personally I love watching the BBL in the evening after a day’s test cricket. I think have the two forms run in parallel is fine. The changes I would make:
1) Shorten the season to 4 weeks;
2) Align that window so that the internationals are available for the duration. I hate it when my favourite overseas players disappear during the run to the finals.
4) Top 4 only to the finals, straight to semis.

Two big issues to address if we want to make the Big Bash great again

The fact that Ange, a generational coaching talent, was hounded from the national role highlights everything wrong with Australian Football.

Nothing but class from Hamilton after the race IMO. He warmly congratulated Max as did Lewis’s dad and was gracious on the podium. The safety car rules and their application in this situation gave too much of an advantage to Verstappen: allowing him to overcome an 11 second track deficit, get a free pit stop and overtake four lapped cars. Hamilton had none of those options and was basically penalised for leading the race. I’d like to see teams taking a pit stop under the safety car incur a 5 second penalty on their finish time.

MUST WATCH: Unbelievable drama as Max Verstappen wins F1 title on last lap

Don’t overlook Aaron Finch’s performance, winning 18 of his last 22 tosses, 6 out of 7 in this tournament. Can I book him via Cameo to join me at the casino?

MATCH REPORT: Magnificent Marsh outdoes Williamson epic as Australia claim World Cup glory

Maxwell (6.54rpo) is second only to Zampa (5.62) for economy this tournament. He plays as a bowler, fielder and lurks with the potential to win the tournament with the bat. All of our quicks are conceding 7.5 runs per over or more. I’d seriously consider Agar for Smith. He can play a steading role with the bat and would be a trump if spin friendly conditions continue for the final.

MATCH REPORT: Wonderful Wade's stunning heist sends Australia to World Cup final

Need a fifth front-line bowler, and a spinner at that on the UAE pitches. Ashton Agar’s omission is baffling. I’d drop Marsh or Stoinis.

You've been Warner-d: Davey sends a message as Australia smash Sri Lanka

Broad is handy and was in career best form before his season ending injury but Dylan Grimes is the back-line general and our key defensive asset.

The five players your team can least afford to lose: Richmond Tigers

Four of the regular back six out last night: Houli, Broad, Astbury, Balta exposed the defence. More of a worry has been the lack of scoring, the last four first halves have yielded just: 1, 1, 2 & 4 goals. Richmond’s brand was forward half pressure but we’ve discarded the players who built that: Townsend, Butler, Higgins and of the ones we retained: Rioli & Castagna seem to have lost their mojo. I’d say only Graham and Bolton have enhanced their reputations this year. Bachar & Cotch have been the soul of the club but age has caught up with them. I think the kids need another season. 2023 might be our next shot.

Tigers can bounce back in 2022: Hardwick

I took that as a subtle comment by Bucks on the Pies woeful salary cap management. Geelong had room to add buckets of talent while Pies had to offload Treloar & Stephenson.

More Collingwood carnage, no easy answers after Buckley's departure

The AFL ditched its state of origin because the clubs and the fans refused to relegate the regular season to second tier status. The other issue was that only three AFL states were competitive at Origin level; not good messaging when you are branding yourself as a national competition. The NRL’s elevation of origin, signals to me, that they believe there are only three matches of League a year that really matter and that they are the exclusive domain of the two states comprising the NQRL, the NSW, Queensland Rugby League.

Origin stuffs up the NRL, again

Simply a recipe to strengthen the Sydney teams at the expense of the non Sydney ones. As the non Sydney conference inevitably weakened over subsequent years, Sydney would push for cross conference finals to allow for a competitive, hopefully all-Sydney, Grand Final. NRL would stand for NSW Rugby League!

My club's not from Sydney: Sell me on NRL conferences

It’s time to base AA selection on the full season, not just the home and away games. If that gives an advantage to players that make finals, then that is exactly right. Ignoring the best footballer of the of the last two finals series and back to back Norm Smith medalist from the list of the best 22 players in the land is untenable. If you were picking a team tomorrow to play for your life would you really select Jack Steele, Taylor Adams or Caleb Daniel ahead of Dusty?

My prediction for the 2021 AFL All Australian team

I attended the final of the pre season cup that year. Seeing the determination with which Hird threw himself headlong into an oncoming pack in the opening minutes, you just knew the season was over. They maintained that intensity all year to sear away the ghost of 1999.

Essendon's class of 2000 are the best AFL team of the modern era

Bachar Houli a bit stiff to miss out. Silver medalist to Dusty twice in Norm Smith voting. Run and precision off the HB line.

Daz and Smithy's draft: 2010s premiership players

I think the 2013 David Astbury is meant to be Nick Vlaustin.

AFL top 100: Richmond's games and goals

What is the AFL's greatest modern dynasty?

Transcendent individuals in a team sport can be a two edged sword. I always had the impression that Jordan was aloof from the other Bulls, regarding them as his supporting cast. That is not the view I have of Martin, who seems to delight in bringing his team-mates into the game.
Martin’s confidence in his ability to lift his team mates in the clutch moments of the biggest games reminds me a lot of Shane Warne.

The inevitable truth: No-one had a chance against Dustin Martin
