VOTE: Wallabies player ratings from first Test vs South Africa

By The Roar / Editor

What a night.

Against all odds, the Wallabies have stunned world champions the Springboks on the Gold Coast, a nerveless penalty from Quade Cooper after the siren sealing a famous 28-26 win that will live long in the memory.

After that Herculean performance, what better way to show your appreciation for the players’ efforts than by objectively ranking each and every one of them. That’s where we come in.

It’s up to you to rate each Wallabies player from one to ten in the form below. You don’t have to rate every player – if you didn’t catch enough of someone’s performance or don’t think they were on the field long enough for you to make a judgment, just leave them blank and it won’t affect their score.

If you need a rough guide as to what each score means, here’s what we go off.

1. Had he not played, the team would have been better off. Negatively affected the performance of the side. May God John Eales have mercy on his soul.
2. Anonymous. Was he even there?
3. Did some things that you expect a player to be able to do, but did a whole bunch of other things that sucked.
4. Was passable in patches, but not up to standard in a match of such importance.
5. Performed his role without anything really noticeable happening.
6. Good.
7. Pretty good, actually.
8. Very good.
9. Excellent.
10. Extraordinary. Calling them man of the match would be an insult.

Unfortunately, it’s against the rules to give Quade Cooper an 11. We checked.

Ready to go? Head onto the form below and get cracking!

I enjoyed the game and what a great win - will do them all the world of good - SA will bounce back theyre a fickle side but what a win!! Hooper is outstanding in his energy and work rate.. Just a question - is Toomua's International career over ?

I don’t think as a combo they are better. Too similar, and too slow. Ikitau brings a little more speed and a different way of making a break, has good footwork, he actually can pass, and the left boot.

I have said it a lot but it’s not less right for repetition; guys who go well off the bench don’t immediately deserve a start. Our starting back row were very good - better, man for man, than their opponents. And then Samu was very good off the bench. Means they played in the right spot. Samu is genuinely versatile - can play all backrow spots. He’s a perfect bench player who is having game changing impact. I don’t think he’d have the same impact starting.

6. Good. 7. Pretty good, actually. 8. Very good. 9. Excellent. 10. Extraordinary. Calling them man of the match would be an insult. So nobody was pretty good? Actually, I don’t think you can read a scale

I thought he was very good. Lineout work perfect and he hit a lot of rucks and South Africans. He also had his best game at test level with the ball. Can’t ask for more. I thought it was the first time this year we got an output from 4-8 that meant Hooper looked like he wasn’t on his own.

His strength tackling-wise is pretty impressive. Can stop guys charging at him dead

I'd like to see Pete Samu get a run. He's looked good i thought.

I also thought he was very lucky not to get a card for his no arms hit on a head-down Etzebeth. I know he missed his head but if they're serious about players safety that's gotta be a card

Yeah, ikitau played his best game for the wallabies but I think paisami and kerrvi are better

The bloke. You rated Ikitau above average then suggested a Kerevi Paisami combi

Spot on Mungbean I’m with you Ikitau is the silent achiever and improving each week with a bullet. His left boot gives a great option particularly at kickoffs when we usually get pinned down. His not overly big but his solid and just does the simple things right.Pick and stick I’d say. Joc would be welcome back as bench cover. Like Hodge can cover all positions in the backline. Ease him back.

I thought Ikitau was a little quiet, only because of Kerevi taking most of the ball limiting his opportunities. What he was required to do though, he did well.

Klutz, your right that’s the most mature performance I’ve ever seen from Quade and let’s see if he can back it up. When you look and break down his game from last night it really was a claytons effort. He didn’t do much, he didn’t push the pass, he didn’t over play his hand or push the big play, he simply executed his core skills. A joy to watch. More than anything else he was calm which appeared to rub off onto everyone else. For once it was nice to watch a wallaby side not so scatter brain…..well with the exception of hooker FF who decided to tackle like a dead beached whale. Sometimes I don’t know what runs through the head of these guys.

Like your thinking. I like Swinton but the more I watch at 6 I’m more convinced 6 is not his spot. He started his club career at lock maybe that’s where he needs to drift back to. I don’t think he is dynamic enough at 6. Just look at SA, AB and Argentina, there 6 can turn a game on its head. Leota is not a second rower although has done a good job at the Rebels this year as cover.

Not sure the turnovers were Swinton fault. He carried set up with the guys behind him twice missing there clean out target thus the strips.
