Springboks make two enforced changes for final TRC Test but Kolbe falls short

By The Roar / Editor

Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber made two injury-enforced changes to the matchday squad for their return match with New Zealand, but star winger Cheslin Kolbe misses out again.

Ox Nché will start at loosehead prop with Trevor Nyakane switching to tighthead after Frans Malherbe was ruled out with a neck injury.

Jasper Wiese, who was left out of the first match while awaiting a judiciary hearing that later cleared him, comes back in for Marco van Staden, who suffered a shoulder injury in the latter stages of last week’s 19-17 defeat against the All Blacks in Townsville.

Kolbe, who missed the team’s first two matches against the Wallabies and last week’s outing against the All Blacks due to a leg injury, trained with the team this week but was unable to complete the last training session, to end his hopes of a comeback.

“We made a big step-up in terms of our performance last week and having reviewed the match, there is no doubt we delivered a performance worthy of a victory,” said coach Jacques Nienaber in a statement.

“With that in mind we opted for continuity in our team, so the only change in the run-on side is Ox taking over in the front row after Frans was ruled out.

“Trevor is a seasoned campaigner who is equally comfortable at loosehead and tighthead prop, and Ox is a strong scrummager, so we are looking forward to seeing what they can do in the scrums.

“Cheslin would have started the match if he made a full recovery from the leg injury which has kept him out since the beginning of our Australian tour, but unfortunately his injury flared up during the latter stages of Tuesday’s field session, so we could not select him.

“On the bench, Jasper takes over from Marco, and we are fortunate in that they are similar in terms of their physicality and strong ball-carrying abilities.”

Nienaber said it was iomportant to finish the campaign strongly after three straight losses.

“We are bitterly disappointed about the results in the last few weeks and everyone in our team realises the importance of finishing on a winning note,” said Nienaber.

Sports opinion delivered daily

“Every member of squad will have a role to play in ensuring that the players on the field are at their best on match-day, and we have no doubt that if we can build on the strong points of our game last week and improve further on the execution of our game plan, we can get the desired result.

“We know it is going to take a colossal 80-minute effort, but the drive to succeed and motivation to win this weekend is as big as it gets.

“Last week we stuck to our DNA and style of play, and with a little more luck we could have come away with the result, so we need to ensure that we are better at it this week.

“We are ready for this challenge mentally and physically and we know what we are capable of as a team, so we’ll go out there and give everything we have.”

You are right Jonty, and the RWC is approaching faster than maybe he thinks. The All Blacks and WALLABIES are building a squad for it. By time he realises it is not working and should have looked at young talent, well like night and day! He will be left in the dark, wondering why the sun went down on him.

If the boks take a flogging I can see a replacement being an idea brought up. However their options might be limited and the one bloke they may want to call up is currently in the naughty chair awaiting his punishment.

Only team for a long while to score more tries in than SA in a game was Aus in 2nd test. I think you might be mistaken

You're probably right there. But with the WC in the cabinet and the Lions tour won he should have been looking at the RC as an opportunity to bring in some new players. Bottled it because he wanted results.

I had dinner with two of their management after the game and they seemed convinced that the All Blacks were a spent force and that the Bokke would murder them at the RWC. Go figure!!

I think he would have given other guys a chance if SA had a couple of wins under their belt.

I can see a 60% improvement from the ABs but not sure if SA has much in them to improve..

76:21 is still over 3 1/2 mins of play. And you had the ball plenty after the successful kick too.

The game. Was. In. Our hands. We gave it away. A scrum takes forever.
