NRL wants answers on Penrith trophy break

By Scott Bailey / Wire

The NRL has asked Penrith for a “please explain” after images emerged of them partying with a badly broken premiership trophy.

Photos emerged on social media of Penrith players with the broken Provan-Summons trophy, with the sculpture of the two men away from the base.

In one of the images, Norm Provan and Arthur Summons can be seen in what appears to be a pram with the caption “googoo gaga” on the image.

The situation is understood to have upset NRL CEO Andrew Abdo, particularly given the status the trophy image has in the game.

Trophies regularly break in post-season celebrations, but the images that have been spread since is what has earned the ire of head office.

An NRL spokesman has confirmed to AAP that the league has asked the Panthers for an explanation.

It’s also possible that the club could be sanctioned, as well as being charged for any repair fees to the trophy.

They need to tell the NRL they were all to drunk and can't remember what happened to the trophy. That way none of them have to be responsible for their actions. We can call it the Melbourne method.

Yes RLFan,I remember that too,the boys in those days had respect & wouldn't of carried on like some of these boys..According to an article wrote by Paul Kent a couple of Penrith players took to social media making some really disrespectful comments, where are the Panthers minders to advise them of their really bad choices & comments or just take their phones away until all the celebrating is over & done with..Hopefully next year might be a better year & they may have some restraint..

Agree that the trophy should be presented, than taken back. I remember Laurie Daley dropping the trophy in a parade through the streets of Queanbeyan, way back when the Raiders won the grand final, but I don't remember it being broken.

Article below from the World Cup page about the missing chook piece from the trophy - missing since 1968, found in 1990, and only just been restored to original state. Plenty of World Cups won in between for an incomplete trophy, but not once did any of the winners think less of it because of the missing piece. No one has raised it as an issue, most of you probably are hearing this for the first time, that’s how big a deal it has been. Here is the 1968 team. Let’s be honest, we aren’t taking down any of these players over the trophy are we? does it really surprise anyone? not the 1st time, won't be the last time. the only way the NRL can prevent it is to present it to the winners for photo's immediately after the GF for photos, then to take it back off them before the team heads back to their club. Apparently the NHL have 3 Stanley Cups - the original is in the Hockey Hall of Fame and would never be allowed to come into contact wth a bunch of drunk hockey players, the replicas are gven to the team for them to party with. Maybe the NRL needs to do the same? Give the team a cheap plastic copy to party hearty with.

Where is the respect for the trophy & what it represents, if they are so disrespectful don't give teams the original give them a take off,but the arrogance of this team shouldn't surprise anyone from their behaviour over the last couple of years..

I Don't think the damage to the trophy is the issue here. Trophies get damaged all the time accidentally. It's how they disrespected the trophy afterwards that the NRL would have a problem with I imagine. And the arrogance of making a digital record of the incident and posting it online wouldn't sit well with them I was happy to see them win the GF as a neutral fan but their antics since are starting to get on my wick. Call me old fashioned but I was taught to have a modicum of dignity in victory. These guys don't seem to know the meaning of the word.

And as a result they found that , the integrity unit needs to be investigated because it has no integrity.
