Can the Brisbane Broncos rise back into finals contention in 2022?

By Guy Hazlewood / Roar Rookie

Bacon and eggs. Allan Langer and Kevin Walters. Brisbane Broncos and finals footy. For years that was a combination that would never falter.

From 1990 until 2019, the Broncos only missed the finals four times. However, the last two seasons have been so far from what Brisbane were once capable of achieving.

The 2020 and 2021 seasons saw the club missing knock-out footy back-to-back for the first time ever, with one the former season being their maiden wooden spoon.

Plus, their last finals appearance was a 58-0 thrashing by the Parramatta Eels after the infamous pokies night.

The Broncos certainly improved in season 2021 and signed fantastic players for 2022, but is it enough to shoot them back into finals contention?

The signing of Adam Reynolds is certainly the perfect pickup for a team who lacks direction in the halves. A handful of games this year were winnable but the extra finesse needed to win was lacking – Reynolds will fix this.

Add in premiership winner Kurt Capewell to an already improving forward pack and things are looking bright.

A signing that has gone under the radar somewhat is Ryan James. While the forwards have improved over the last two seasons, they were still lacking guidance from an older head, which James can add.

Whether or not he fits into the 17, the 30-year-old adds valuable experience off the field and on the training paddock.

Finally, Kevin Walters, Ben Ikin and Dave Donaghy are slowly instilling the right culture and bringing pride back into the jersey, which have been lacking for a long time.

You can see a tight playing group forming and the passion to win is returning.

Will all these signings and culture changes be enough to see the Broncos playing in September again?

Yes.

The Broncos will be a huge shock in 2022 and just make the eight.

I think its possible that they make it to top 8. If they do then some other top teams would have to have a bad year like raiders last season. Staggs should stay in centers, he is lethal on edge. Young players only gonna get better. Future looks promising for this team, there are some serious talent coming through if they can keep them at red hill for longer.

He had some personal issues that are out there, lost his father I think either last year or earlier this year. I am pretty sure he will bounce back, he is natural and gifted with skills. His footwork can burn any nrl player.

Cobbo at left center with Oates outside him, two powerful runners, with clean well timed service from Renyolds ?

Why not give them all 5yr contracts? They are never short of a medical retirement to fix the cap up when needed.

My team? My team are the Rabbitohs, 100%. I will have a soft spot for the Dolphins but that is because I live in the area and I supported the Dolphins while Souths were forced into NRL exile by Murdoch the NRL. Didn't the Broncos win a premiership or two with Glenn Lazarus, Chris Johns etc? The Broncos have had a fair few NSW players or Kiwis in recent years as well. Look at your current team of Kiwis, PNG and NSW juniors; Payne Haas, Albert Kelly, Ben Te'o, Alex Glenn (retired), David Mead, Xavier Coates (leaving), Danny Levi, Richard Kennar, Jesse Arthars, Jordan Riki, Herbie Farnworth (England), Karmichael Hunt... Nat, are there ANY QLDers playing for the Broncos at present? Glass houses, Nat. Put the stones down.

Hands off Cody Walker! From the sounds of it Walker's contract extension is all but done and should be announced either this week or next along with Jaxson Paulo. Souths have made player retention their top priority and Walker is at the top of the list. Cameron Murray and Alex Johnston have already extended their contracts to the end of 2025. Campbell Graham, Jai Arrow and Tevita Tatola are signed until the end of 2024. Damien Cook, Latrell Mitchell, Tom Burgess, Keaon Koloamatangi, Mark Nicholls, Jacob Host, Hame Sele and Jed Cartwright are all signed until the end of 2023. Souths young guns, Lachlan Ilias, Blake Taaffe, and Davvy Moale have had their contracts extended until the end of 2023 and Peter Mamouzelos' contract has been extended until the end of 2024. That's 19 players accounted for and locked up out of the Dolphins reach. Bennett has also signed an agreement not to approach (or sign) Rabbitohs players for an extended period after leaving the club. I don't believe he would do that to sabotage Jason Demetriou's chances in any case. So, who is left? Josh Mansour? Steven Marsters? Taane Milne? The Dolphins are welcome to them but Taane Milne has signed until at least the end of the 2022 season. Once Cody Walker and Jaxson Paulo have had their contracts extended Souths will be covered for the next 2 - 4 years. :stoked:

This story is about the Broncos chances of making the finals next year. I agree they have a much better chance than in recent times but again, that's heavily reliant on a forward pack actually dominating (not one player in Haas) and a halfback staying fit and playing like he did in Sydney. Lose Reynolds for any length if time and I think they're toast.

So you are going to refer to your team as the Anchovies? They will be when the Broncos beat them down. You seemed to have missed the tone from us Qlders. State above Club always. We don't car where the next best kid goes as long as they stay here. For all these Souths juniors you go on about, your mob having been dining out on Qld talent for a decade.

TBF, he has had a sh.t run of injuries. He doesn't offer much spark but he can tackle all day. He needs a good #14 rotation. Paix is very quick.

I'd like to see them stick with Gamble in the halves provided he can cut a few mistakes out of his game - fingers crossed Reynolds can act as a bit of a steadying influence there. There will be plenty of pressure on Kevvie, especially if they're struggling after the first few games, but hopefully he puts the mix and match squad selections of last season on ice and just opts for some stability

Is there an opening? Unfortunately, I have been sent north of the border into North Korea QLD by Freddie to coach QLD juniors and "teach them how to play footy". In a few years time they will be be playing Rugby League like an AFL player... endless knock ons, missed tackles, miskicking the ball and expecting to get a point for missing a goal. Happy days for #BlueDawn

Whoever they have it seems they'll be competitive but Keven Walters coaching has added nothing to the Broncos. He can make them competitive but he doesn't appeal as a potential premiership winning coach. As there is no one better around he surely has a season to get the team organised. It was easy to blame the previous coach but it has become apparent the clubs admin was bad. Hopefully the changes are enough as I see every day (being a Postie) they have a very committed following out here on the Peninsula. It'll be interesting to see how many switch allegiance to "The Dolphins" in 2023. Walters has next season to keep them on board.

That's incorrect. You can't say they've put all their eggs in the one basket with Reynolds. They have signed well in the past twelve months and there are several other players who will very likely make a big impact/improvement to this team. The Broncos have also resigned Kelly, who showed great promise in his few appearances, and Gamble who was solid all year. Paix is also a natural half. So they do have options should Reynolds go down. Go-forward is not the Broncos biggest deficiency, especially with Payne Haas in the team and having added an origin and premeirship winning back-rower. I haven't seen a comment or article anywhere that says Reynolds will replicate his form from Souths, but the Broncos need composure, game organsation and a kicking game and he will most definitely bring that. Season ending injuries are a worry for any player, any team. What would happen to their teams if Reece Walsh, Cody Walker, Nathan Cleary or Tommy Turbo went down for the season? Most great players can't be replaced. Unless you're the Storm of course. Everyone can make their crystal ball opinion on teams making finals, but an objective view is that they have a much better chance of making the finals than the last two seasons.

It's hard to imagine Staggs as a five-eight instead of centre. Sounds like Walters is trying to appease him instead of him jumping ship.

Kotoni Staggs is still one of the best strike centres in the NRL. The only ship that has sailed was his chance to play for the Redcliffe Dolphins in their inaugural season after he re-signed recently for the Broncos. Staggs played for the Dolphins before he debuted in the NRL. Same with Dane Gagai. I wonder if either player had known in advance that Redcliffe would be playing in 2023 if they would have changed their plans accordingly?
