Travis Head has been rewarded for his remarkable Ashes series by rising into the top five of the ICC’s official Test batting rankings.
Head, who was named player of the series and player of the match twice after a stellar summer, is now the fifth-ranked batter on the ICC’s list, leaping into the top ten for the first time in his career.
Remarkably, he’s still only the third-highest Australian on the list, behind Marnus Labuschagne (1) and Steve Smith (4). England captain Joe Root (2) and New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson (3) round out the top five.
Indian veteran Rohit Sharma is equal fifth with Head on 773 points, while former captain Virat Kohli sits narrowly behind.
Head started the series 27th in the rankings, but jumped seventeen spots to 10th following his stunning run-a-ball 152 in the first Test at the Gabba.
Accumulating a series-high 357 runs at an average of 59.5, and a strike rate of 86.02.
Head’s superb series came despite heading in with question marks over his place in the team, while also missing the fourth Test at the SCG after testing positive to COVID-19.
But he returned with a bang for the series decider in Hobart, hitting another century in bowler-friendly conditions to set Australia up for victory.
Pat Cummins remains the highest-ranked bowler in the ICC’s Test rankings, 59 points clear of the next-best Ravichandran Ashwin; while Josh Hazlewood remains in eighth spot despite missing all but one Ashes Test with a side strain.
Ageless England star James Anderson has also fallen one spot to seventh, with New Zealand veteran Tim Southee switching spots.
Mark Wood was rewarded for his stirring series by jumping seven spots to a career-high 31st.

Funnily enough, Marnus is sitting equal 12th on the all-time batting rankings. Only 7 more to reach Ponting and another 12 to reach Smiths all-time ranking. A couple of decent scores in Pakistan and some could come under threat.

So this accounts for why Head accumulated so many points just from 3 scores?

I would think having 1 good series should see you rise a few places. But coming from not even sure he will get a game, a few spots up should mean about place 15-20.

"However, you will not find much explanation of the rankings on the ICC website" You won't get much explanation of anything on the ICC website, Dave.

The way England twisted and turned potential competitiveness into continuous defeats via by poor selections, batting collapses and ordinary fielding, I reckon that earns England a high degree of difficulty. Perhaps along the lines of a 2 1/2 somersault with double twist - very difficult to actually make happen. Kudos to their endeavour to implement it. One could almost be fo oled into thinking they practised it beforehand.

talking to yourself don . I get heaps of responses . think your the discourteous one who blows his own trumpet . facts and evidence . you just don’t like someone with a different opinion often based on fact . it irritates your ego . now stop comparing head to border . we can all acknowledge head was fantastic in the series . more stern tests ahead this year .

Paragraphs. Punctuation. You might notice how few responses you get. It's because you are discourteous. You may well have something to say but very few will read it if you don't honour the rest of us with the conventions of English.

let’s see how they tour Pakistan Sri Lanka and India it will give us a proper indication of our batsmen in oppressive foreign conditions . will give us a much better indication of the most skillful batsmen in our side paul. I tend not to place too much emphasis on rankings but it’s pretty clear many of the top players deserve a top ten ranking hard to order them right now as aus hasn’t toured abroad for years

Don, found the catch that Wylie took. The way he took it right handed over his body is right up there with Maxwell's. I very much like the fact that Wylie is an opener. Augers well..

I agree that this ratings system throws up some strange (and fleeting) positions, but it does sometimes bring to the attention some ‘under-the-radar’ players, who are often whipping boys for keyboard haters. My big question is how Nathan Lyon never appears in the top 20 but his sub-continental counterparts are always there. Maybe Lyon needs some games against teams other than England and India.

I also believe the rankings are effected by the 'degree of difficulty'. Not just the opposition bowlers, but also the level of scoring in the match. as such, Hobart would have given Head a bucket of rankings points , considering only green also score over 75. Head was also the only centurion in Brisbane.

And average over 43 after 23 tests in the past would put him top 15 maybe? But he would have gained lots of rankings points because his two centuries this series were both in games where no other player scored a ton.

Part of it will be that the Hobart hundred really stood out in a low scoring match: only one other player scored over 50. And again in Brisbane not other player scored a century. That really pushes the ranking points up.

I don't disagree and I didn't mean to denigrate Head if that's what you assumed. More just noting how it works and why it would be that a batsman who averaged less than 60 in a series, and actually only played four tests, suddenly jumped from 26th into the top 5. Usually I would have thought you'd have needed a Steve Smith 2019 Ashes to suddenly jump that high.

And then SL/Oz/WI run rate. The Wyllie catch is in those video clips on The Roar. Maxwell-esque. Wyllie is averaging 193 for his 3 innings.
