COMPLETE SRP quarter-final teams: Big inclusions for the Reds and Tahs in do-or-die matches

By The Roar / Editor

It’s finals time in Super Rugby Pacific!

Whatever you think about the merits of an eight-team finals series in a 12-team competition (and there’s been plenty of debate this week on The Roar), it will all go out the window when finals footy actually gets underway.

The Queensland Reds face a David vs Goliath battle against the Crusaders. No one is expecting them to win and the Reds are hoping that works in their favour.

Co-captain Liam Wright returns as does Hunter Paisimi who has overcome a shoulder injury and will start on the bench.

Harry Hoopert and Angus Blyth are the other inclusions for the Reds.

“It’s great to be here together in Christchurch for the week,” Reds coach Brad Thorn said.

“We get the chance to bond as a team and get a feel for the conditions we’ll play in this Friday night.

“It’s unique to play the Crusaders back-to-back at their home. We’ll embrace the challenge ahead come Friday night.”

Meanwhile, Harry Johnson-Holmes is the big inclusion for the NSW Waratahs who take on the Chiefs on Saturday afternoon.

Ned Hanigan, fresh off his first start of the season, partners Jed Holloway in the second row.

Charlie Gamble forms a hard-working and exciting backrow alongside Wallabies captain Michael Hooper and Will Harris.

“It’s great to have Harry back in the team, he was one of our strongest and consistent performers prior to his injury and adds a significant work rate on the field,” Waratahs coach Darren Coleman said.

The Brumbies had three straight losses to end the regular season and they’ll have to beat the Hurricanes without Rob Valetini whose hamstring still isn’t quite right.

Good point Rhys, I'll pull my head in. I'm assuming BT's comments about the new baby possibly have more behind it than appears. Thanks for the perspective.

Perese is the biggest missing piece I reckon, followed by Harrison. On the other hand, for mine, and also granted what everyone else has said, Harry’s return to the front row makes this potentially the best forward pack the Tahs have fielded this season. Therein lies a source of hope. Go the Tahs.

Because it was a nothing explanation. LSL had a bub ten months ago is not a reason. By that reckoning Paisami wouldn't be picked either. Simple fact is that Thorn has dropped him for Smith, Blyth, Vest and whoever he took as squad cover. Thorn's the coach, that is his prerogative. I disagree with his decision but he's the one in the hot seat and I'm just a gronk with a keyboard.

And if you read the comments on the other story, you will see exactly what I predicted, a horde of gronks who won't accept Thorn's explanation now that it has been given.

Tahs put it on their website when they release the team. They also report who is available from the squad to play club that weekend. https://nsw.rugby/news/harry-johnsonholmes-returns-for-waratahs-quarterfinal-clash-with-chiefs-202261 It’s a bloody good initiative and wish all teams did it.

I don’t begrudge Horton his opportunity, and I hope he has a great run from the bench. I didn’t think that the NSW scrum had suffered with Vailanu (they have with Ryan). Horton last year was excellent at times, just too infrequent. Vailanu has been enjoyable to watch every game.

Hard to argue. I made the same point earlier. The only things difficult to judge are his scrummaging skills. Perhaps Horton is considered better

Question for NSW supporters, is Mahe Vailanu injured? He has had several cracking games in a row and is a fine player. Can’t see why Horton would be in for him.

TTMK, I love Pablo as a player, he is passion and effort personified. Without the “tackle”, I’m so happy we get to see a player of his quality run out this weekend. However, as much as we (me) gripe about consistency (or lack of) with the referee’s, they are making decisions in the now. The “Judiciary” are making decisions with benefit of time and multiple camera angles. The QC’s/SC’s etc et al, on Pablo’s hearing, should all be sacked.

JP, I can’t decide whether you are a comic genius or a complete fool. You say that the Kangaroos and ABs aware/are the better teams and therefore presumably harder to crack. But Thorn did both. But your warped brain translates this as Thorn refusing to play for the lesser team. On balance, you’re a complete fool.

Dean, as a Crusaders supporter I agree! That should have been a Red without doubt.
