The Super Rugby Pacific impact XV

By Highlander / Roar Guru

The more things change, the more they stay the same so the story goes, and in a season where the Blues and Brumbies brought it big time, those rugby grown-ups from the New Zealand mainland handed out lessons to both at the pointy end of the rugby season.

While they do doubt have some serious cattle, it was more game plan and individual execution of same that delivered for them when it really mattered.

But over the course of the season there are a number of individual performances that so elevate their own side that they warrant some kind light shined upon them. Players who may not make the team of the year (some no doubt would), but who by virtue of their individual efforts drag their team performance up.

Front row: Ethan de Groot, Samisoni Taukei’aho, Taniela Tupou

Ethan de Groot

Had some sort of scrummaging season for the Southerners, spanking a few tightheads along the way. Deemed not fit enough for the All Blacks squad despite tackle numbers that blitzed all other NZ loosehead contenders, and carry numbers second only to George Bower.

Going to be a few tightheads who will have his picture in the changing rooms as a reminder.

Tough call.

Angus Bell

I do worry that the Tahs overuse him on the carry, especially early in a match, and that has to have some sort impact at scrum time where his ability to stay low and stay up at the same time did cause his some issues. But over and over this year, he was the differentiator who drove the NSW performance.

Samisoni Taukei’aho

Has to be the All Blacks not-so-secret weapon for the series against the Irish. One mean man come scrum time and his ball carrying in the tight stuff this year was as season-defining for the Chiefs as it was numerically astronomical.

So dominant in his position I do not think there is an unlucky omission at hooker.

Taniela Tupou

The first of a couple of players who are included by the evidence of their omission. His importance to the Reds and overall team performance could not have been made any clearer by his absence.

Second row

Sam Whitelock

The Crusaders’ stocks were decimated this year, to the stage where two under-20s players were included in one match day 23. When Sam played, the Crusaders simply went up several levels.

James Tucker

Another whose value was demonstrated by his omission. In the New Zealand matches early in the season it was the Blues tight five that drove the awesome start with Tucker prominent in the vanguard. Coach Leon McDonald sowed the seeds of his final demise by benching and later omitting the workhorse.

Noteworthy

The Brumbies’ second row and second row bench – critical to the way the team played, rarely did not make a game outcome impact.

Back row

This is all sorts of difficult but here goes.

Blindside: Shannon Frizell

Seems an awful long time ago that Frizell got injured but his form in the first couple of months of the year was top drawer.

I did the four-hour drive to watch the Highlanders-Moana Pasifika match, only to sadly witness his injury. Running straight through Dalton Papalii at Eden Park for a try was a highlight. Never replaced his impact after injury.

Contentious omission

Was thinking about Rob Valetini but the Brumbies have such depth it’s hard to have differentiating impact with that loose forward panel.

Openside: Charlie Gamble

Why do I think this guy is going to get an easier ride from the Australian passport office than Quade Cooper had? I know it’s a hard argument to make that he is the impact differential in this position when the Waratahs have the Australian captain at 7 also, but for mine Charlie Gamble was the catalyst behind this Waratah season, even when he was asked to swap sides. Some sort of engine he has.

No.8: Ardie Savea

Regular Roar readers will be aware of my view that Savea is a luxury in the 8 shirt that the All Blacks can ill afford, but at Super level for the Hurricanes he is a one-man wrecking ball upon which his team is seriously dependent.

Noteworthy

Lots to choose from, Harry Wilson at the Reds next off the rank with Marino Mikaele-Tu’u and Henry Time-Stowers big impact change agents for their respective sides.

Halfback: Nick White

Critical to the way the Brumbies play, and when he is on, the ACT boys are a different animal. Actually, he might be the biggest impact differential between his own worst and best performances.

Noteworthy: Folau Fakatava

The ultimate impact halfback off the bench and rewarded with a peek over the wall at the next level this year.

First five-eighth: Richie Mo’unga

As complete a season in all aspects of play in the 10 shirt as you would ever wish to see. You want your key individuals to show up in the biggest games.

Brumbies totally neutered in the round robin, generated a territorial win in the Chiefs semi-final with only 38 per cent ball and a man of the match performance on the biggest stage in the final.

Notewothy

Reds were a very different side with James O’Conner at the helm.

Left wing: Timoci Tavatavanawai

Had the pleasure of watching this guy live and up close under the roof in Dunedin. Destroyed the Highlanders that day, as he did with most he came across. Devastating ball-carrying season.

The first test of the new competition and teams will be retention of Tavatavanawai as all the NH agent antennae must be twitching.

No correspondence will be entered into. (Okay, except Vinaya Habosi maybe.)

Midfield

As a competition, we may well lament the lack of physical and technical expertise that the South African forward packs would always bring, but the step up of physicality out in the backs has been seriously enhanced by the addition of the Fijian Drua and Moana Pasifika.

Kalaveti Ravouvou and Levi Aumua are my midfield impact combination.

A ball-carrying midfield and big-hitting midfield extraordinaire.

Anyone peddling the line that backs cannot impact play behind a beaten forward pack should catch some replays of these guys.

Give them a better platform to play off next season and they are going to wreck all sorts of havoc.

Right wing: Tom Wright

Flying wingers are not the first thing you think of when discussing the Brumbies, but Wright continued to find a way to not only contribute to his side around the park but also on the scoreboard.

Along with Jock Campbell, one of only two Australian backs to feature on the try-scoring top ten list. Wright just has that happy knack of delivering big plays when they are needed.

Is it just me or does the comp have a surfeit of left wingers and a lack of those in the other flank, Sevu Reece aside?

Fullback: Will Jordan

Simply changing the game, the way Christian Cullen did.

No doubt I have missed some hometown favourites across the franchises.

Any ideas, Roarers?

Valentini changes the Brumbies. They can dominate with him. The best they can hope for without him is parity

Will be an interesting test series against Ireland. Could be tough for them at the end if a long season and a dip in form at by their URC/HC teams at the pointy end of the NH season.

Nice work Highlander, in many ways it was an enjoyable and mostly competitive trans Tasman - snd perhaps even more so if the Reds has more luck and less injuries. Be interesting times for the AB's after a relatively poor season in 2021, particular when is NZ rugby has more talent than patience and for good reason too...

Gamble has no passing or linking game. Not good enough for test footy yet.

Christie is a machine eh, and he has the type of game perfectly suited to the next level up. I noted how Perofeta could not find a way into the first receiver slot last week, but when he did run a kick back Christie floored him on the spot, that looked like a marking job to me. Timoci Tavatavanawai – you want to have nothing to do with trying to stop that bloke.

GDay Long been fan of Kellaway - just knows where to be at the right time, something you cant teach. Wondering if Rennie needs to think a little laterally about the Wallabies fullback role.

GDay Mz I think Ethan was adopted, but yes Aus born. the Reds falling out of the sky really disappointed I am glad you used the phrase and not I, but yep bang on. Really interested to see how McReight goes in Aus A, he needs to perform outside of the Aus Super derbies where he was really good. There is something not quite right in Queensland with this side, I have no idea what it is

Impact players is a great concept. Tom Christie's stats do seem to show when he'd not there, he's missed. https://all.rugby/player/tom-christie Timoci Tavatavanawai. The impact player's impact player, the one whose photo the impact players post on their walls.

So integral to a team, northern clubs are willing to pay more for them than almost any position.

@ HIGHLANDER impact 15 needs people who made an impact 7 - Tom Christie - over 200 tackles and the only 1 with that stat for a season , with less than 2% MISSED !!! i think he missed his first tackle in that game v Chiefs !!! then channeled michael jones and put Blues to bed. 14 Sevu Reece - the try he scored in the final was pure skill - with a bouncing wet ball on a wet pitch. as a unit the Crusaders back 3 scored 30 trys - 10 each !! just showed the individual parts worked in unison to make the machine run smooth.

Hi Harry, Jordan has to be the standout back of the series. He just brings so much to the game and position of fullback. If Foster puts anyone else as 15 he must be mad. I have always liked Tom Wright's play but in the past it has been marred by brain fades. He has developed very well this season and now provides another valuable back pick for Oz and Jock has put his hand up though the position of 15 for Oz has not been claimed by anyone yet. Even with the opportunities provided, Banks has not convince me he is the 15 for Oz. His running game, especially on kick return is not good enough. Kellaway has been muted this season due to the lack of opportunity playing for the Rebles but I would still stick with him as RB for Oz. Sevu Reece is such a handful. His ability to slice through a packed defence is amazing and he could be a match winner for NZ. Looking forward to the contests next week. Cheers.

Good article, Highlander. Thanks. Am watching de Groot with interest. Think he will be really good soon, and force his way onto AB radar. Big lad, at 190 cm and 122 kg. On checking those stats. see he was born in Australia...NZ parents ?? As a Qlder, the Reds falling out of the sky really disappointed...... hurt some good players..... Fraser McReight, Hunter Paisami, Uru, even Wilson and McDermott....all either stood still or went backwards.

I have to admit that I didn't watch very many kiwi only games this year but I did watch most of the games when they were playing an Aussie team. So, with that limited view I still can't argue against the team you have proposed. Blindside flanker had a few great impact players this year - Frizell is indeed an awesome player, and as Carlos said, Pablo also definitely had a big impact in the games I watched (just ask Jordie Petaia), and Tom Hooper from the Brumbies stood out for me too. Whitelock was a beast in the GF, as was Richie Mo. Fakatava definitely had impact in the few games that I saw him play, and Will Jordan is unbelievable, runs around like he has Harry Potter's invisibility cloak on. My Reds definitely missed JOC and TT when they were out. I'm really looking forward to the tests starting - I might even try and watch SA v Wales. Thanks for the story Highlander.

Yeah true don’t think it needed if “that makes sense”. He is going real well. I was listening to an old Rugby Pass pod the other day and one of the players said “last five minutes” you know the ref is going to pay most of their attention to the attacking team in case there is the slightest hint of sealing off, which will let defence get away with more. And if you are attacking near their line at the death your aren’t going to get a ruck penalty against the defence unless it’s really egregious, or words to that effect, letting defence get away with more! A couple of them got us this year, but one decision isn’t the only thing that costs you a game.

Though i think that it’s easier to be an impact player where your team is a bit more average if that makes sense. - this is the premise behind the article Reimer looks a real find doesn't he, plays well above his size too. Wonder how many times he has looked back at the non penalty video
