Wallabies DIY player ratings from the 1st England Test: Marika's your MOTM, Swain swatted

By The Roar / Editor

The Wallabies had one of their most famous wins against England overcoming significant challenges to take a 1-0 lead in the best of three series. Here is how the players performed in Perth according to your votes in our DIY player ratings poll.

With Quade Cooper a very late withdrawal after suffering an injury in the pre-game warm up, Noah Lolesio came in to fill the void as his replacement.

It can’t be easy being a replacement at the best of times but particularly when you find out so close to game time that you will be putting on the boots in such a key position as fly-half.

Lolesio performed his job and went above and beyond expectations. His performance scored him an average rating of 7.49.

Just as impressive were the two debutants in Dave Porecki and Caderyn Neville who both averaged above a 7 rating according to your votes.

The official man of the match on the night went to Samu Kerevi but our poll shows it must have been a tough decision with so many performing strongly.

Marika Koroibete had the highest average and the highest most common rating of 9 with 34% of responders rating him as almost perfect.

Andrew Kellaway (7.74) also polled well and the captain Michael Hooper (7.27) was solid once again.

It was the kind of night where all the Wallabies had to step up and be counted with a red card testing their depth.

It was a great character test and the Wallabies passed it with flying colours. One down, two to go.

Gordon/Gordon would disrupt my future Wallabies combination of Will Harris, Will Harrison and Harry Wilson.

I think he helped get the Wallabies into position so Samu could score... Yes, I think he made a positive contribution. For the record, I think I gave him a 6 (from memory). Would like to see him come on a little earlier. If we could also get Carter Gordon up to test level, then the Gordon/Gordon combination would be unstoppable. Rugby's answer to The Woodies. You know it's true.

You are a harsh marker. I didn't see a single carry where Kerevi failed to make it over the advantage line, often drawing in multiple defenders. Petaia's try included a very good draw and pass from him in the lead up (and from Ikitau then Kellaway, just good hands shown throughout).

Can't forget Gordon only played 5 minutes. Any score higher than a 5 in that short time suggests people think he had a positive impact. Now if he had scored the try that sealed the win instead of Pistol Pete...

I must miss a lot when watching the Wallabies. I’m going to pick on 2 players / ratings. MK and SK. MK one good kick off win, and one try saving tackle. Both well done. He also had a number of carries where the English dealt with him, he lost ground and presented slow ball. Did he do more than his job? It’s his job to challenge and win that kick off, it’s his job to tackle the winger. How many first up tackles did SK break? How many post contact meters did he make? Any offloads or a draw and pass? From what I saw he went into contact high and was ineffective. Did he do more than his job? Surely a 5 is all he gets? I’d give the whole team 5s except Slipper. He played on the wrong side of the scrum for far longer than anyone hoped or expected.

Yeah I thought the bench were excellent. Gordon didn’t get much time but he hit Samu nicely with the pass for him to score. Petaia and Slipper came on early and played well. Fainga’a he was physical, couple of good plays scoring a try and big chopping tackle that allowed Samu and Hooper to earn a turn over penalty, Sio carried strong and Phillip I thought came on and just kept putting his hand up and finally got us decent front foot ball. Samu just does what he does as a sub, right place at the right time and showed his class. The starting forwards kept us in the game and made their tackles and worked hard at the breakdown. It was a bit like some of the old Wallabies V Bok games where we just seem to be hanging in there in the forwards but then when we get a sniff and we take them.

Less than a standard deviation so not really anything meaningful statistically.

Also thought Gordon was rated a bit low.Did his job perfectly when he came on.Swain should have probably got 0 for getting sent off and some of the other ratings were probably more for the gutsy effort rather than skill level.

pretty high scores considering the first 50 minutes was absolute rubbish. Nench warmers made a difference and they have been marked down. Maybe I should re-watch it (don't think I could subject myself to the first half again though). I hope that cements Kellaway's spot at least

Pretty consistent with my ratings but maybe about 0.5 higher than I gave. The most hard done-by player I think was Gordon. I still don't think he has amazing scrumhalf skills (pass speed/length, kick speed/length/accuracy), but his overall awareness and gameplay are really good. It just made him look bad that the Wallabies switched off in defence for most of the time he was on.

Big shout-out to young Noah, especially in the circumstances surrounding his sudden run-on start... cometh the hour cometh the man! :rugby:

I think Peteia’s influence was also undeniable in the game. Came on pretty early and looked astute in everything he did. His aggression in defense is improving every game.

2 bigger highlight reel moments, the try saver, and the steal of the ball on a restart, more memorable for some people. The average score difference is very minor 8.01 v 7.94

Four might be a bit generous to Darcy Swain.
