How to make golden point even more golden

By The King of the World / Roar Guru

In the NRL, when two teams after 80 minutes are locked on the same score, we then enter a period of time named golden point.

The concept of Golden Point is for the two teams to play an extra 10 minutes – with two five minute halves – to decide a winner by either kicking a field goal, penalty goal or scoring a try.

Should neither of the three ways to win take place in said period of time, we have a draw and both teams finish with a point.

I have always liked this concept despite the fact that my team, the Newcastle Knights, have sadly won the least amount of golden points.

Some golden point stats.

How many times has it happened? 150
How many decided by a field goal? 90 (60%)
How many decided by a try? 30 (20%)
How many decided by a penalty goal? 13 (8.67%)
How many has been drawn? 17 (11.33%)

I do like golden point as mentioned before but with 60% of it decided by a field goal, I can think of adjustments to the concept that is designed to increase some excitement.

I would like the duration of the 10 minutes played unless a try is scored. However, not under golden try.

– Penalty goals are ruled out
– Field foals and Tries still remain
– If one team kicks a field goal, the game continues and the team who kicked the field goal cannot do so unless the other team does to tie it up.
– Should both teams after 84 minutes have kicked a field goal each, same rule apply. This means both are still allocated to kick them.
– If one team kicks a field goal and the opposition scores a try, game over
– If the team who kicked the field goal scores a try, game over
– If only the team who kicked the field goal in the 82nd minute is the only point scored in Extra Time, that team wins.
– The try in Extra Time doesn’t need to be converted.

Examples under this new created concept. Newcastle vs Gold Coast 20-all after 80 and now we head into extra time.

– Tanah Boyd kicks a field goal in the 84th minute, Gold Coast lead 21-20 and the game continues. Lachlan Miller scores a try in the 87th minute, Newcastle defeats Gold Coast 24-21 and that’s game over.
– Jackson Hastings kicks a field goal in the 82nd minute, Newcastle lead 21-20. Tanah Boyd kicks a field goal in the 85th minute, 21-all. Tanah Boyd kicks another field goal in the 88th minute, Gold Coast lead 22-21. Should that be all that happens during Extra Time, Gold Coast win 22-21.
– Jackson Hastings kicks a field goal in the 83rd minute, Newcastle lead 21-20. Kalyn Ponga scores a try in the 86th minute, the game is over and Newcastle win 25-20.

I can see this creating extra excitement for the game and if your team is down by one under these rules in extra time after 86 minutes, it will lead to suspense.

Will they kick a field goal to tie it up or go for a try to win it all? This is an idea I came up with, not everyone will agree with me and that’s perfectly fine.

Now Roarers, I have made my say. How do you like golden point? A fan of it or not? Do you have your own idea? Should we just call a draw after 80? The floor is yours.

With respect I think thats all a bit complicated. I personally think a draw is a decent result for a game. I don't understand why a team thats (as is usual in the case of a draw) delivered a really tight contest to the full 80 mins, should walk away with the same competition points as team that had their arses handed them for 80 mins. By example: Parra's epic high quality first round game and loss in extra time to the Storm and Penriths amazing 2 point field goal on the buzzer equaliser against Parra before losing in extra time are worth the same in the competition as the Knights received in their embarrassing flogging by Parra or the Raiders in their flogging by the Panthers. That isn't right. Get rid of it, with the exception of finals.

I'd like to see Golden Half. That is, if both teams are even, they need to continue until points are scored from a length of the field try going through at least 10 sets of hands. Same would apply at full time.

GP only has a place in finals, not during regular comp. Draw is all good, if you want to win then you have 80 minutes. with GP for coaches it's like soccer, 10 mins to go, play for a draw and hope for luck in the shootout. Horrible way to decide a game, just toss a coin and avoid injuries.

Drop golden point for regular comp games. Bring it in for finals. Five mins each way to continue until a winner.

That's cold jimmmy. I've only recently thought about that being the only GF that will ever play GP. That said, very happy for the boys, town, region and they came home better. Sidenote: "happy" autocorrects to "badly" on my swipe text. Might be Freudian.

10 minutes, Golden Try. A try ends the game, but a team can still win after 10 mins if they're ahead on the scoreboard via penalty goals or field goals.

That was more in response to the 4-3-2-1-0 scoring system and a loss in 81 minutes is no different to a loss in 80 minutes…

It is a sad indictment of the times that we need to get our thrills (adrenaline rush) by sitting in front of an app with anxiety rising over a field goal. When rugby league was a sport kids would fill the suburban parks after school playing Touch or Tackle like their heroes, the chicken scratch included, until sunset or a fight. The thrill of hands free bicycle riding couldn't even compare with the bloodied lip and torn shirt of surburb supremacy. Mum's chastisement only added to the sense of satisfaction. Then there was bonus was being too tired to do any homework. Despite the Fox lot repeating the word 'entertainment' like a politician a lie rugby league is still a sport. Well, it is still classified a sport even if it is nowadays worth its own spot on the comedy channel. Gamble responsibly.

Really , Refs shoukd be determining 30 percent of GPs but they don't have the spine. It can become ypugly when it deteriorates into a free for all but wins like the Penrith one are beautiful to watch. Such precision.

TB, you mentioned the other day 80 minutes is enough. I'm happy with that . Not 81 or 85 . Finals maybe

There are a few things we have to accept in life. Sometimes we, the fans, are the product. Betting agencies are major sponsors and they want results. Broadcasters make money off advertisers, not subs. Broadcasters do not want games going into Ad time or worse over the NEWS.

Refs rarely blow the whistle in GP now, I was surprised to read there had been 13. Imagine if there absolutely no ramifications? It would turn into a game of union.

Yep ! I have no issue with Golden Point to decide a match if one team is good enough to snatch the win. The only issue I have with Golden Point , is that referees put away the whistle and obvious penalties are rarely blown to give a team the chance to decide the game.

I’m fine with golden point, but wouldn’t weep if it was canned tomorrow But I don’t know that messing about with it achieves too much One thing I don’t understand is why people have an issue with field goals deciding close games, whether it’s in normal time or extra time it’s always been the way So I don’t really get the need for additionally complex systems like this to try and ensure close games are decided by a try. Why? Not having penalty goals in extra time is ridiculous

Not a fan of golden point in any format. Players have 80minutes to win it, if its a draw its a draw! Recall Broncos V Panthers round 1, Reynolds kicked field goal with 10 minutes left on the clock stretching the Broncos lead to 7 points, more than a converted try and Broncs won by a point. Recall Broncos V Dragons round 3, Reynold kicked a two point field goal 20 seconds before half time reducing the Dragons lead from 12 points to 10. Less than two converted tries. Finals should be 20 minutes extra time played in two 10 minute halves, and the full 20 minutes played, still no result ? Most tries ? Least penalties ?
