Is a try worth risking a severe neck or spinal injury? Three burning questions the NRL must answer

By KiwiBear / Roar Rookie

There are some burning questions that need to be asked before the playoffs begin and answered hopefully before everybody forgets that they were even asked in the first place.

When are we getting the decision on an 18th team?

Would anyone argue now that the Dolphins are the 17th team that an 18th team is needed to even the draw out? I am of the opinion that that decision must come sooner rather than later; the days of kicking the can down the road have to be in the past.

Nobody likes uncertainty: no decision holds the game back whereas bad decisions can be reversed or at least should be. The decision should (if not already done) be made in time for next season’s launch to prepare for a 2026 introduction.

My reasoning:

1. This gives the draw-planners as few years with byes in the mix as possible.

2. By 2026, you will presumably have the broadcasters and the NRL in negotiations for the next broadcast deal. 2026 gives them a bonus game per week under the current deal as a ‘one time limited offer’ before the next deal. This will be the sweetener so to speak.

You should not expect the revenue to increase exponentially but if you show them something that adds value then you should get more interest, more potential revenue and more competition between Channel Seven and Channel Nine, Fox and whatever new broadcast option comes up.

3. You have another five-year broadcast deal window (assuming the five-year pattern continues) that can be completed before the 2032 Brisbane games, inside of which there is a three or five year period to bring in the 19th and 20th teams if that is the ultimate end goal, which only the NRL/ARL commission will be able to know. Conversely, if this turns out to be a bad decision the powers that be can reverse-engineer and bring down the team numbers or restructure the competition if needed.

Other reasons why you would make this announcement at the start of next season and have them ready for the 2026 season include who the 18th team is. While there has been much speculation, for now, it is somewhat academic. What isn’t academic is that the announcement and execution will steal some of the AFL’s thunder. They are due to have a new team in 2028 based in Tasmania. Being a leader not a follower might be good advertising for the code.

Similarly, with the success of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, there will be a renewed push for expansion of the A-League. Again, it couldn’t hurt to steal some limelight, media attention and a bigger slice of the advertising/revenue generating pie and make that work in league’s favour, especially if there is continued attention given to the NRLW concurrently pre-2026.

What is with all the black?

Has anyone besides me noticed all the black alternate jerseys popping up lately? Granted, I am in New Zealand and aside from Warriors news on the main free-to-air broadcast news bulletins, there aren’t many ‘other’ games talked about.

Still, from what I have seen (thanks Channel Nine and YouTube) there seems to be a proliferation of black this season. I have been watching rugby league games since the very early 1990s and back then you had Western Suburbs and the Penrith licorice all-sorts jersey. There was also North Sydney’s brief experiment with the solid upper black bar, red stripes and white jersey of the 1992 and 1993 season before they went to the more traditional solid red upper bar, white and black. I would say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but who else since then has gone in for the black?

Maybe I am wrong but nobody really! Until strangely during the 2021 season when in the relative anonymity of the NSW Cup, the same Bears introduced a jersey of the 1980s style but inversed with all black with red stripes. Same again this year a black and red alternate jersey. Then I started noticing all these other black jerseys. Cronulla, Canterbury and the latest I see are the Dolphins – I am not allowed to say Redcliffe am I? The Dolphins’ black jersey looked superb and, sorry Cronulla and Canterbury, but yours did not, maybe as it goes against what I am used to seeing. Personally, I think the Bears are innovators and everyone else is copying them but then again I am biased. Maybe there is a glut of black sublimate printing dye on the market?

Is a try worth risking a severe neck or spinal injury?

I saw the highlights of the Newcastle Knights vs St George Illawarra Dragons season closer and Dominic Young scored a try that had the commentators screaming with excitement but all it had me doing was wincing and turning my eyes away. He came down, landed on his head and then his back. A couple of minutes later he scored with all his weight seemingly taken by his arm and there are regular examples of other players performing such feats; Dallin Watene-Zelezniak pops to the front of my mind.

Is it just me or is it concerning that these kinds of flying aerobatics are becoming the norm? Granted, the second example from the Knights’ game isn’t as concerning but surely the first is. The head and neck are very fragile… is it only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs? Running for the line and diving for it at speed must increase the risk of neck injuries and broken wrists and arms. While you can recover from the latter two, what about the former?

Sports opinion delivered daily

Only recently, there was a Daniel Anderson round to benefit the former Warriors and Eels coach who had a tragic accident while body surfing of all things. Am I being an alarmist and a killjoy, or should there be a conversation about how far is too far?

Perhaps settling on a number is the way to go be it 18 or 20 or back to 16 but removing licenses from badly performing clubs and giving them to new entities/clubs?

Hi Maxtruck. 1. I didn't say i didn't like it I said I said I was concerned about the possibility of it going to far. I have been watching league since 1991 season and even back then there were players who would stretch and dive for the line DJ Halligan was one playing on the wing for the Bears and was it Herron for the St George team that used to do it too? 2. Read my words I said I noticed the proliferation of black I never said I didn't like it at all. It is just some team jerseys don't work with certain combination. And Enoch Powell was concerned when it came to the level of melanin levels in your skin rather than the qualities of the person. 3. Why 16? Why not 14? why not remove GC and Sths?

I think its quite reasonable to be concerned about the possibility of spinal injuries. The spectacular acrobatics we all enjoy are recent invention. so its hard to know where this practice will evolve to. If there have been no serious neck injuries so far, we can't assume this will always be the case. My thought starter is ... its illegal for a defender to place an attacker in a dangerous position, so could it also be equally illegal for an attacker to place themselves in a dangerous position? So if you dive over a defender and your hips go higher than your head them this is a practice I would like to see discouraged (penalised).

1/ If you do not like the wingers diving for tries you should be campaigning to go back to pre 2010 when the corner post was considered "touch in goal" 2/ You don't like black, either did Enoch Powell, personally I do not care, I watch the football not the fashion parade. 3/On expansion, I think 16 teams was the go. Cull a Sydney club?, Merge Illawarra with Raiders & Dragons with Sharks? Or a WA mining magnate offers Penn $25mill for the licence?

Perhaps it’s time for league to make the hard decision to announce an 18th team whilst dropping some clubs? Yes, this is the hardest outcome for fans and the NRL but bringing in teams in more diverse locations whilst not diluting the talent pool, sponsorship support or stretching the season out too long and becoming truly national seems a better outcome for Leagues future. NZ2, Perth, Central Coast, Brisbane2 all have good claims to be added.

Waldron. Ah Hello Yes I did because it is being dicussed on this page. You just want to argue. It is possible to have or start a discussion without having an opinion on it. What problems have I caused? None What drama have I caused? None. Except you getting worked up for no reason. If you and I mean you want to have strong opinions that is fine write your own article on the topic. I did have strong opinion. Just on the expansion portion of my article.

You didn't start a discussion, you tried to get other people to start a discussion by asking vague questions with nothing behind it even though you wouldn't have asked the question if you didnt already have an opinion. Thats not starting a discussion, that's just an attempt to cause problems without solutions, starting drama. You obviously think it's a risk. Is it a risk too far? Well, only if there are other alternatives, if not, it's a risk worth taking. You think you're the first person to think of it? You think the thought hasn't occurred to the people who's job it is to look after these people? If you can't think of any solutions, and if you didn't ask us for any, then you answered your own question before you even asked it.

@ Waldron I think you are another playing the man and not the ball. So let me respond You said at the end of your statement “If you think there should be a discussion, cool, start the discussion”, that is exactly what I did do I started the discussion and drew attention to what could be an issue. Further you said “but at no point in your article or even in the comments do you even come close to providing even the start of a solution” I don’t have a solution why ask for a solution when all Im doing is asking is it a problem firstly and if it is, infact a risk,is it a risk too far?

Do you have any solutions? Do you have anything you can contribute to the discussion? It’s easy to say they need to have a discussion about this, how do you know they haven’t? If you don’t have any solutions, how do you know they don’t either? Maybe they’ve already looked at the risk vs reward and realised that any rules they could bring in to stop it would do more harm to the game than good. Do you penalise a bloke for simply trying to score so that he doesnt try that hard? Something his pay check relies on him to do? Do you penalise the bloke trying to stop a try so that the attacker can run in untouched so he doesn’t have to dive? If you think there should be a discussion, cool, start the discussion, but at no point in your article or even in the comments do you even come close to providing even the start of a solution…

Fine, of course it’s worth the risk. Footy players made that choice a long time ago.

Brett Allen You are playing the man and not the ball. At no point in that section of my article did I call for that type of try to be banned. I merely asked the question. Risk is part of life but so is minimizing harm.

You may well be right but the question is worth asking. Risks are there in other sports I agree but the NRL has a duty of care and should at least look into it.

I cringe every time one happens. For the life of me, I can't understand why coaches allow it. Last weekend, I forget which game, a player went over the top and landed awkwardly on the ground luckily escaping injury.

@ Nat “I don’t think we will see a new team even announced until the next broadcast deal is close.” Given their history of slowness I fear you are more likely correct than not. I still maintain giving a new team time to prepare and having them in for a year before the next renewal would work as a sweetener to generate interest in the next TV rights period. I don’t think “they will be paying for the new team themselves” 1 year of slightly reorganised grant money will noy make a huge difference. And if the new team is relying on NRL money to get by then I dont think that team/bid should get past the initial meeting. Any new team should be a financially independent identity. Your also correct the “next team will likely be a new destination (outside of Qld & NSW)”. I would go with Perth.

Tony you are obviously a wise man! The NRL should look into these things, not to bring in a big stick but just a discussion to see what is safe and what isn't

Big Gordon Yes we are looking at the same issue from two different angles. I maintain that caution is the norm and I advocate for a different approach. There have been 26 seasons in the NRL era and we have had 2 expansions or 1 if you look at the Titans as a pure exercise in re establishing the previous incarnations of a GC footy club. These came at season 10 and season 26. Where would league be now if the administrators of the 80's had been so cautious? No Canberra No Bronco's No Knights not to mention Steelers and the 1st GC team the seagulls. And I maintain that the NRL should look at expanding and if a new team isn't working not be afraid to remove it as you said there are no shortage of bidders wanting to be part of the action.
