The kids are alright: Wanderers' big win over City represents a shift in A-League dynamics

By Isaac Symons / Roar Rookie

In the Unite Round showdown against Melbourne City, the Western Sydney Wanderers not only asserted dominance but orchestrated a victory that underscored the significance of strategic youth development.

Despite missing two-thirds of their star players, Wanderers’ commitment to nurturing emerging talents shone through as they fielded six U23 players, a move that not only secured the win but showcased a blueprint for A-League success.

The impact of this youth-centric strategy was palpable, with one of the U23 players delivering the winning goal and leaving an indelible mark on the entire match. An 18-year-old academy product’s brilliance in creating the decisive moment added an exclamation point, emphasising the dividends of investing in the next generation.

Even on the defensive front, the Wanderers demonstrated the prowess of their youth development program, with a 21-year-old academy product excelling as a central defender. The stark contrast with Melbourne City, who opted for experience over youth and fielded a team 3.5 years older on average, serves as a compelling narrative on the evolving dynamics of success in the A-League.

The success narrative extends beyond the youth brigade, embracing the revival of players once deemed unwanted. Oscar Priestman and Aidan Simmons, previously overlooked at Sydney FC, showcased excellence in Wanderers’ colours, further underlining the transformative impact of providing opportunities and nurturing latent potential.

What sets this victory apart is the commendable integration of youth into the first team, a facet where Western Sydney Wanderers had historically been inconsistent. Key contributors like Alex Bonetig and Alex Badolato emerged as stars, with Bonetig, in particular, evolving into an indispensable force, shaping the team’s playing style.

For a club situated in one of the most abundant talent hubs in the country, the focus on getting youth development right is not just about immediate success; it’s a responsibility that extends to the broader landscape of Australian football.

The hope now is that this newfound emphasis on youth integration will pave the way for improved retention, securing the future of both the Western Sydney Wanderers and Australian football at large. The game against Melbourne City served as a turning point, a chapter in the evolving story of youth development in the A-League, with WSW positioning themselves as the authors of a promising narrative.

The Crowd Says:

Until these kids see no other club than WSW it won't be effective. It's really annoying that Mariners continue to head down to Western Sydney to find their next 'local' talent, but even more annoying that kids sign for them. Also annoying that SFC have some weird agreement with Bonnyrigg High School. One day kids will grow up wanting to play in red&black and an offer from any other club will be offensive. That's when the next Harry Kewell will be found.

The crowd number was disappointing. I know the A Leagues doesn’t draw big crowds, but I would have expected at least 15000 Wanderers and City supporters to see the Wanderers play City. It was potentially a great game with two top clubs. Then you add in another 1000 or so from travelling Macarthur and WU supporters and a thousand or so curious people who respond to the concept and you have the 15-20000 supporters to make it really good. I don’t understand football supporters at times and reasons for not going, but the United Round can be improved with more effort by the APL. I was also disappointed that most of the Victory supporters and many of the CCM supporters left the Sydney v Adelaide game. The bus may have been a reason for CCM supporters. Having extra noise would have made the main game on Saturday night even better. It seems at times that just because you follow a club you can’t appreciate another game involving different clubs and I don’t get that.

You mean the corporate area on one side of the stadium. Well the APL have been very greedy, with this extra round , all the sponsors and members are excluded including all those who would have paid big money for that side of the stadium. They werent satisfied with getting the state government money.

Ninkovic, who better to close out a game. I believe also a big reason he joined the Wanderers was a coaching role once done. Badolato is sensational, that ball for Pierias and the latter's run...superb Milanovic' confidence grows every game Great all-round team performance Everyone bagged Kresinger too...but he scored one the most important goals in that season

It was a good win for WSW, they dominated the match and i really though the VAR would screw them at the end but lucky they were not playing SFC. I reckon Rudan will give more kids a chance when needed as the ones he has played so far have stepped up.

JMac can’t play OS, he gets found out against quality opposition who wear him like a glove and stifle any opportunity for him.

If mentoring you talent is what these marquees are there for, then appoint them as coaches. Marcelo is the one who is doing the job on the field as well. Ninkovic looks like he should have retired. Hendrix they are better off with him and Brilliante alternating and Priestman being the runner. Antonsson he has scored some goals but missed a lot as well.
