Sydney FC fullback drafted into Socceroos WCQ squad after double injury blow

By News / Wire

The Socceroos will play their second World Cup qualifier against Lebanon without injured duo Jordy Bos and Riley McGree, with full-back Joel King rushed into Graham Arnold’s squad as cover.

McGree and Bos failed to finish the first half of Thursday’s 2-0 win over Lebanon in Parramatta and won’t take the field for the rematch in Canberra on Tuesday.

Having battled a foot injury this season, McGree was forced off the field early on, with Bos succumbing to a knee problem soon after replacing the Middlesbrough midfielder.

“McGree and Bos were sent for scans following the match, with the Socceroos’ medical team now in consultation with Middlesbrough (McGree) and KVC Westerlo (Bos) on treatment plans,” the Socceroos said in a statement.

“There has been no return to play timeline set for either player, with both Bos and McGree to be reviewed by club medical staff on their return.”

With Aziz Behich already sidelined, Australia were left with no natural left-backs in the squad. Centre-back Kye Rowles played out wide on Thursday.

Sydney FC left-back King has four caps.

Midfielder Keanu Baccus is suspended for Tuesday’s game, in which a win will guarantee Australia’s passage to the final round of World Cup qualification.

The Europe-based Socceroos will leave Bruce Stadium straight after the game to catch a Wednesday morning flight out of Sydney and back to their clubs.

April shapes as a defining month for several Socceroos, with up to nine of the squad vying for promotion to one of the world’s top-five leagues.

Chief among those is influential midfielder Jackson Irvine, who has spent most of his career in Scotland and the lower leagues of Germany and England.

The 31-year-old’s club side St Pauli, where he plays with fellow Australia international Connor Metcalfe, sit top of Germany’s second division and are eight games from being elevated to the Bundesliga.

“It’s a testament to the kind of perseverance that a lot of guys have,” Irvine told AAP.

“I was always playing in the second leagues and waiting for the opportunity to compete at the highest level.

“(At St Pauli) we’re enjoying the ride and it’s nice to be part of a team that has a strong winning mentality. We want to achieve great things.

“Whatever happens between now and the end of the season, we have given ourselves a chance – and for Australian football that’s what we want to see.”

Among the Socceroos used by Graham Arnold over the last two years, only two are currently signed to a club in the top-five leagues of England, Germany, France, Spain and Italy.

Goalkeeper Joe Gauci has yet to play for EPL side Aston Villa since leaving Adelaide in January, while midfielder Denis Genreau has been troubled by injury all season at French club Toulouse.

One-cap centre back Alessandro Circati’s club side Parma sit top of Italy’s second tier.

Circati, 20, was considered so crucial to Parma’s hopes of getting back to the top flight his club have played hardball when it comes to releasing him for next month’s under-23 Asian Cup, which doubles as an Olympic qualification tournament.

The English Championship, however, is the league from which the Socceroos could spawn six Premier League players.

Harry Souttar’s Leicester are entrenched in a three-way battle with Leeds and Ipswich for the two automatic promotion spots.

Ipswich, who boast retired Socceroo Massimo Luongo and centre-back Cameron Burgess, are in third place, a point behind Leicester and Leeds.

A late run from 10th-placed Middlesbrough – currently seven points off the crucial top six – could put Sammy Silvera, Tom Glover and McGree in the play-off places.

I have no issue in King being selected now (there is no viable LB, who knows how the national team works, anywhere close to CBR for a game in one day). He won’t play anyway and he shouldn’t, he’s being outplayed at club level by a left footed centre back. Otherwise bring in Farrell for a taste if he was fit/available. But my concern here is – Arnie picked not 1, not 2, but THREE specialist RBs for this squad: Atkinson, Miller, Jones. But he picked half a left back (if he insists on playing Bos as a winger). That is what bothers me – you have Davidson (same league and position as Bos – perfect) and Elder (looks like he’s slowly coming back from injury but has been consistently playing for years). Why are they being ignored? For a younger LB in King? Bos is younger and better anyway. Smith and Gersbach – although not playing quite as regularly. We have a lot of quality LBs who need to find some game time, yes – but it grinds me that he picks so many RBs and no LBs. I do wish there were some questions round those selections. Behich isn’t getting any younger, he’s playing Bos at LW – who is he grooming to play LB moving forward?

Are you serious? The FA is rolling in coin now it's seperated from the Aleague. We have a strong youth squad that is starting to gel. To add these tournament offers an opportunity to show off players that may have fallen off scouts radars e.g Garang.. All that aside, we are about to play the sbase of the South Korean team we are likely to face at the U23 Asian Cup for qualification to the Olympicsif that's not a good enough reason nothing is. Sure, we could get Circata into the team, but it seems foolish to threaten his security in a team about to be promoted? I'm liking the development of these junior squads, makes me feel like any growth is not a one off.

Mauragis is with Olyroos, Clisby overrated and dirty, Farrell is with Olyroos and I dont think Garrucio has been playing that well until maybe recently. Farrell was removed from the Olyroos squad because of injury

The expectations of Socceroos fans need to be higher. It is shameful that Arnold is still manager after the fiasco of the Asian Cup.

Selecting the Socceroos and Matildas squads is fun to play! It’s also great to read everyone’s opinions, but I’m glad we’re not the selectors. Not a lot of agreement amongst us. I reckon we’d have three or four completely different squads. It’s a job probably best left to our present coaches and enjoy watching our teams play. And I reckon we’ll enjoy this Tuesday in Canberra. More goals and better football will happen.

So you want JD to fly 20 plus hours from Belgium to play in what really is a meaningless game (cmon we will win whoever is used and if not still win the group anyway. ) Get serious ps I doubt King will actually play.

It is what it is, with no left backs around he used the last resort and grabbed King. After winning this next game Arnie can go on and use as many A-League grubs as possible.

australian football fans need to be sold on the selection policy though when it comes to international football - this is where australia has gone wrong for years with multiple coaches like i always say no other international coach (with the exception of southgate - who has been widely hammered by the press and fans) selects players who are not playing weekly for their clubs) absolutely cannot keep giving out caps to player who quite frankly dont deserve them, its one of the main reasons arnie shouldn't have been renewed anyways back to the actual topic im talking JD purely at the moment (given the circumstances with injuries) long term he will not be viable farrell may well be the long term heir, but he needs to really concentrate on his attacking output in the next 12-24 months we all know he can defend well, but as a modern day full back he absolutely must be good going forwards (which he is not currently)

Thanks for the reply, Scout. You don't need to sell me on selection policy, by the way. As far as left-back generally goes, I take it your preference is Jason Davidson. 1 out of 11 is... a start.

the whole point of international football is picking the best possible players who are playing weekly and performing for their club side. doing this eliminates the main criticism from fans/media/pundits aimed at the coach (it would then mean the coach is judged on his actual coaching ability ) joel king is a defensive fulllback (should never be near the socceroos squad based on this alone, as australia should wants attacking full backs not defensive) and to top it all off hes not even playing weekly and is a well known arnie favourite over the years jack clisby is more deserving of a socceroos call up than king (clisby is not the player i would’ve taken by the way – just using him as a point of reference) the LB i would’ve taken seems to have been forgotten about – very strange considering he was a favourite of anges time in charge, i the starting LB for his club, plays in a much stronger league than australia and has a higher attacking output whether his club who are in a relegation battle would’ve released him on such short notice is another story (however it is an international window) from talking with his father, he has not been contact by officials from the FA for quite some time (it might well be his age, or it could be he has no relationship with arnie) its probably a more damning indictment of meulensteen who is earning in the high 6 figures and is not doing his job correct as essentially the european liaison to arnie (but this leads into a bigger issue in that the FA have not invested enough money in a proper european scouting setup – 1 man like meulensteen cannot do this properly alone) heres a hint on who it is: contrary to popular belief, jordan bos is not the best australian left back in belgium

I saw a replay of him attempting a wild lunge this time on the goal keeper and he got his foot stuck in the ground and got the injury from that. If his foot didnt get stuck in the ground maybe he would have collected the keeper and got a red card.

The biggest question I have is not Joel KIngs selection but who thought it would be a good idea to play in this u23 west asia tournament. Arnie remember when he wasted endless amounts of money having the Olyroos go on three months of touring and playing matches before Beijing and then selected different players. The actual u23 tournament starts in late April, Parma are odds on of having made it to Serie A by that date. Arnie had done his usual again taken players from the A-league in his vanity exercise.

I was surprised that Sydney FC’s second choice left back was chosen, but there are no other left backs available and he has done the job before. It would have been interesting to see Courtney-Perkins given a go, but he is away with the Olyroos. Being in Australia and having an easy trip to Canberra certainly helped his cause - just like stand by cricketers in England (from county teams) when the Ashes are played.

Maybe so, but what's the alternative? Come to think of it, a couple of days ago you said, and I quote, "name me a position and [sic] ill give you some options on who could be [sic] viable alternative..." You were subsequently asked to provide 11 'viable alternatives' and you've so far failed to provide a single one. So, what's the dream-team, Scout? And, noting there's a game in Canberra on Tuesday and limited options readily available, who should've been called-up as cover instead of King? I am genuinely interested by the way, both because you know a lot more than I about the player pool and because you keep on claiming there are better alternatives and then strangely refusing to say who they are?
