The AFL’s player movement period for 2019 gets underway today as free agency opens from 9am AEST. Join The Roar for a live blog of the all the latest news throughout the trade and free agency period.
After weeks of scrutiny and discussion, today is finally the first day where we might see some serious action get underway, and there’s more than a few moves that could be formally made.
Free agency is open today, while trades will have to wait until Monday at the earliest. But as many as four free agents could formalise moves to new homes today.
Firstly, expect a move for Adelaide’s Cam Ellis-Yolemn to the Brisbane Lions to be confirmed today. The Lions confirmed earlier this week they would be putting through the paperwork for him to join the club on a three-year deal today.
Another Adelaide free agent Sam Jacobs could also leave the club today. It’s been known for a while that Jacobs has agreed to a two-year deal to join the GWS Giants, and it’s only going to be a matter of when the clubs have their paperwork ready that decides how long this one takes to go through.
Two-time Richmond premiership player Brandon Ellis is known to have agree to a deal worth nearly $3 million over five years at the Gold Coast Suns, and he, like Jacobs, is one who might have his deal locked in today.
Adam Tomlinson from GWS is believed destined to wind up at the Melbourne Demons, but it’s not clear at the moment how long that might take to formalise, or if there’s any chance that someone else could swoop in on the deal. It would be a surprise to see this one go through today, but it’s not off the cards.
Grant Birchall has been linked to the Brisbane Lions but there appears to be some trepidation here, and it’s not clear if Brisbane are committed to the idea of getting him to the club. I’d say this is one that will happen later in the trade period, if it happens at all.
Another you wouldn’t expect to see get done today is Jamie Elliott, a free agent at Collingwood. He had a meeting with Pies football boss Geoff Walsh earlier this week. While it’s understood he would prefer to stay at Collingwood, he’s getting better offers from the likes of Melbourne, Hawthorn and North Melbourne.

Any Hawthorn rumours other than Patton and Frost?

Ah, I'm with you now. I think it's just a case of what West Coast actually has available to offer. I mean, if they had pick 3 then no doubt it would be on the table. I think they'll end up looking to trade up their current selections for a top-10 pick, then package that with next year's first rounder. Seems the most logical outcome to me. I can't begrudge you hoping for him to stay though. I'm feeling the same way about Daniher and Fantasia!

Just trade Jack lukosius this year's pick 15 and next year's pick 11 for the two Crouch Brothers that way gold coast still get to have picks 1-2 to get the draft players every club has really wanted to get.

Not saying you are dissing him. I can see your desire to have him. The no offer for a few years prior to drafting and third pick, inadequate offer last year, the club are showing the don’t rate him. He stayed once before, we are hoping.

Nic Stevens and Cam McCarthy are two I can think off, but it's rare. I want a club to do it just so it opens the market up and takes the power away from players demanding a particular destination, therefore stopping the big clubs from dominating trade week. Aren't all players effectively employees of the AFL? So does that come into account when talking about restriction of trade? The AFL aren't saying Kelly can't play for them, therefore, no restriction. I think the court would say, the AFL have no obligation to employ you, they're not stopping you from playing WAFL footy, again, no restriction.

Kelly's out of contract, FA status doesn't matter much.

You haven't mentioned Dangerfield though alot of social media are using that trade between Adelaide and Geelong as basis for what WCE should give up for Kelly.

More Porkie Pies Don, Fyfe broke a small bone in his leg in 2015 GF missed a few games in 2016. Hill won the F@B in 2018 . Horribly wrong again !

Can you point me to any point I have mentioned Dangerfield? If not, unsure why you would even bring that up, twice, when replying to my responses.

With a proper coach, he would have been. Give em all to Ross and the sky's the limit.

This from his manager earlier today: Edmund said the Blues were more seen as “opportunistic swoopers” rather than Papley’s absolute No. 1 preference as he “doesn’t really care who he plays for”. That's good news, from a Swans perspective. I wonder if NM will be open to parting with pick 8.
