The 2023 Trade Period is up and running, with a number of players already finding new homes for the 2024 season and more set to follow. Join The Roar for a live blog and rolling coverage of the day’s news, rumours and action from 9am (AEDT).

While we’re yet to see a player traded, the free agency period has been a busy one, with Adelaide’s Tom Doedee heading to Brisbane and North Melbourne veteran Todd Goldstein joining Essendon.

That along with several pick swaps, including the Western Bulldogs trading a swathe of picks for Gold Coast’s pick 4, was the sum of the deals completed on the opening day, but several major trade requests have also landed.

The biggest of the bunch was Fremantle goalsneak Lachie Schultz seeking a trade to reigning premiers Collingwood; under contract for 2024 but set to become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end, the Dockers have a major dilemma on their hands.

Port Adelaide wingman Xavier Duursma has also requested a trade to Essendon, while the Bombers is also the expected destination for St Kilda midfielder Jade Gresham, with the Saints weighing up whether to match the Dons’ offer.

Dermie also notes the inflation effect, with the 15% increase in salary cap coming from next year. the "process" doesn't seem to account for ythis

yes. basically what the AFL is saying to clubs is let your players go to free agency exactly when you need them most - when you are struggling down the bottom - because that's when you can get the biggest reward for them. head, meet knuckle...

Yes,yes, yes. We know how you like to whine endlessly about Victoria, the VFL(sic) and the injustices WC face. While I think the rule should be scrapped it's a bit disingenuous of you to intimate that every Victorian side has benefited as much as Geelong and perhaps the Bulldogs. Though it's your narrative and I guess you're going to stick with it till WC get 22 home games each season and all finals held at the Craypot!

The squad is full of diamonds if you have a closer look. Of course they were terrible, it’s undeniable. However they have been brilliant at it for a while now. Gawn 34, Clarry was a bolter unrated by others, Kozzie 12, JVR 19, Rivers 32, ANB 40, Sparrow 27, Petty 37 and then there’s the trades. May was thought as not enough for Hogan, Lever was said to be overpaid, Langdon and Hunter on the wings cheap as chips. Hibberd a club great.

Clarko will be licking his lips. Be very interesting to watch Nth progress over the next 2-3 years.

No disrespect to Clarko, he is looking after his own club's interests. The AFL should be looking after all club's interests.

Depends on where you finish on ladder but yea you’re probably correct. Smells like a rat. Elephant brain Clarko is behind the emails for a better deal. Nth should win the premiership in 26’ or 27’ with the list they are currently acquiring. Alls well that ends well :boxing:

Yes Collingwood is partly to blame, he also used interest from others to bump is salary...Collinwood should not agree to pay that much for a ruckman in the first place but palyers from other clubs have had different thinking to win a few premierships...If Grundy settled for a slitght lower wage, he may have stayed at Collingwood. Can't re-write history but I do beleive he is also parrly to blame for the situation he is in.

Free agency compensation is a joke, the only compensation should be the salary cap space that's created.

Macca, I think the criticism about Mackay is due to how highly the AFL have rated him. He is a good player in my opinion. But pick 3 is an outrageous overstatement of his ability & reward for losing a player through free agency. Lets face it, all of our clubs have lost players through free agency & it can be disappointing when it happens. But if Carlton were losing a mid range player & you were going to receive pick 3 in the draft. Tell me you wouldn't be packing his bags & pushing him out the door?

The Sun have also had their rookie list expanded to 10 spots and have been granted academy access to Darwin. There is a difference between overs & a handout. It is unfair to the other clubs that are in the back half of the ladder also making a genuine effort to rebuild.
