Saturday twilight football heads to Queensland, as Brisbane Lions host a struggling Sydney Swans at the Gabba. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4:35pm AEST.

Brisbane’s year, starting so well before faltering with consecutive losses to Victorian super clubs Essendon and Collingwood, got back into safer territory with a win over the Suns last weekend, so being back at the Gabba will suit them well. Sydney’s year, though… well, it’s been dreadful, and they’re stranded on one win from six starts.

Brisbane has been playing strong football, but it’s important to remember they are still a young, inconsistent side and the Swans are a club that they have not defeated in roughly a decade – which is one hell of a stat to get over.

For mine, today’s clash is probably the best opportunity in a long while for Brisbane to poach the four points over the New South Welshmen.

Sydney were competitive for much of the clash against the Giants last weekend, which bodes well. If they get a fast start against Brisbane, and frustrate the young Lions, they might be able to get on a run.

Brisbane have fallen away badly when facing the Victorian clubs in the past few weeks, so will be striving to keep to the basics and not head in overconfident against Sydney, who are underdogs in most of the AFL circles at the moment.

After last week’s strong effort against Gold Coast, the Lions have opted to make no selection changes today.

Sydney – who will be without stalwart Lance Franklin again this week – have made three changes to their squad. Ryan Clarke, Ben Ronke and James Rowbottom have all out, with Robbie Fox, Will Hayward and veteran Kieren Jack returning.

Prediction
Sydney, owing to their underwhelming start to the season, are probably likely to come out firing in today’s clash.

But Brisbane will be in front of what is likely to be a vocal home crowd, and with the Swans still looking decisively out of sorts, I’ve gotta back the home team. I don’t see a blow out happening, though.

Brisbane by 9 points

So where have Angela and Michael and the rest of the Sydney posters who baked everyone who predicted the Swans slipping down the ladder?

Agree with most of your summary but what game were you watching to declare Hipwood was dynamic up forward.

Anyone know how to get the "return" button to work on Android?" I can't get paragraph spacing. Weird

Lions absolutely smashed the Swans, except on the scoreboard. +33 i/50’s. +7 clearances. +41 cont pos. Kicking 14/19 gave the Swans a sniff in the last 10mins who had 23 scoring shots from 40 i/50’s. Bit of a messy game but the Lions simply had far too many opportunities and ultimately made the most of them. Rich was brutal and clinical. McCluggage was silk on the outside and finished with 3. Charlie and Hipwood were dynamic upfront but missed many opportunities and McStay dropped marks he needs to take but they all impacted the scoreboard. Gardiner and Hodge kept the defence in check with the exception of the 2nd quarter. Aliir and Papley shone for the Swans but they’re were swamped for most of the game. Not the prettiest game but a handy win for Brisbane to sit at 5/2 after 7.

Brisbane have withstood a fierce second quarter challenge from Sydney, as the hosts win against the New South Welshman in almost a decade. Brisbane's first quarter was a scintillating effort, pummelling an overawed Swans outfit who looked lethargic and worse for wear. Sydney, though, came back with a purpose in the second term, playing perhaps their best footy of the year in a six goal effort that briefly put them back in front. The Lions took back the lead, though, and never relinquished it as they eventually ran out relatively comfortable winners against a decisively average Sydney outfit. The Swans' were well served up forward by Tom Papley, who booted four majors, and Hayward, who sent through two, but it was the Lions' forward line of Cameron, Hipwood, McCluggage and McStay who all sent through two goals apiece which provided plenty of spark. Neale and Zorko were prolific, as usual, whilst Hewett and Kennedy provided good midfield performances for the visitors. Brisbane: 15.19 (103) Sydney: 12.9 (81)

Good job, Lions. A lot to work on though back-of-centre. A real threat come Finals if they can address these issues Saying that: you know things are going well when people like me start giving a $h!! Thanks for the call, AD. Great as usual.

Lions’ attack working well but their D and discipline when not is possession is a big worry for me. 80 points conceded to quite possibly the worst attack in the league, at home, is not good despite this win. Something they can work on though.
