David Teague takes the reigns at the Carlton Blues this weekend, his first assignment is the Brisbane Lions at Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Join The Roar for live coverage of the match, with scores and a blog from 1:45pm AEST.
Carlton managed just 33 points against the Essendon Bombers in a scrappy Sunday afternoon loss at the MCG.
Patrick Cripps was again well-held; this time the Bombers’ Dylan Clarke tagged the star midfielder to just 11 touches.
The 41-point margin was hardly one to silence the Essendon critics, however it was the final straw for the Carlton board, who parted ways with their head coach on Monday morning.
It was agreed that Brendon Bolton’s time was up after another failed start to the season.
David Teague has been named as the caretaker coach for the 1 and 10 Blues, a “different personality”, says injured co-captain Sam Docherty, “the infectious type”.
The Brisbane Lions ran over Hawthorn in the final term last Saturday evening to a 19-point win at the Gabba.
In a slow start to the match, the Lions kicked six first-term behinds to find themselves down by 25-points at the break.
The Lions’ midfield stepped up late in the game to ensure Brisbane’s fourth win in-a-row against the Hawks, and cement the team’s place in the top-eight.
At selection, the Blues made a total of four changes for this weekend.
Interim coach Teague declared a “clean slate” earlier in the week, and this extended to the recall of Dale Thomas, who was sent to the VFL last week by the leadership team for drinking 48 hours out from a game.
Veteran defender Kade Simpson is also into the squad, while forward Mitch McGovern has overcome a minor ankle injury to be fit to face the Lions.
Lochie O’Brien is the fourth inclusion for Carlton.
Liam Socker (foot) and Darcy Lang (hip) have been sidelined through injury, while Alex Fasolo and Matthew Kennedy have been omitted from the side.
One change for the Lions this weekend, Jacob Allison will play his first AFL game for the year.
The last time Allison featured in the senior side was in round seven, 2018, but for his hard work and domination at NEAFL level, he has been recalled to the senior side.
Ben Keays has been dropped this weekend.
Round 16, 2018 was the last time these two teams met. At the Gabba, Brisbane won their first back-to-back games since 2015, with a 65-point thumping of the Blues.
Prediction
The emotional toll of this week could go one of two ways for the Blues: inspire a victory or exhaust their already struggling young side.
Unfortunately, early intensity form the Blues should die out by half-time and the Lions will capitalise.
Brisbane are sitting comfortably inside the eight and will be looking to secure another four-points at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.
Brisbane by 31 points.

A number of articles have been written that indicate that Brisbane is at least a year ahead of Carlton with more experience and talent. Based on the latest result between these two teams the result suggests that is not true. Amazing what a week and a new coaching philosophy can do for a team and for it will be interesting to see the results of these two sides by the end of the season and if the two clubs are actually closer than the professional journalists would suggest?

Jonboy, if they are kicking people out for calling an umpire a ‘bald headed fl0g’ then I am lucky I don’t go to many games.

How bad is '' Flog'' ? the umpire obviously shaves his head so the bald should be not a problem or is it more preciousness.

You wouldn’t want to call an umpire a ‘bald headed fl0g’ either.

I liked Jacks game, did a lot of grunt work that didn't get rewarded.

Thanks AD you have summed it up pretty well. I just wonder how much patience he has to wait. The reports here is that he has filed for a two year extension. If they tell him to wait till the end of the year that rules him out of the current vacancies in fact if he is sought by those clubs. Rightfully so he has to weigh up his future.

Matey, it was a Saturday night on a long weekend. A busy night; I can't always be on here answering questions!

I don't reckon they'll be any movement on the contract stakes until next year at the earliest. He'll be fine this year; Freo's improvement to this point secures him for a little while yet I would've thought. It's too early to predict anything though. And it all depends on whether the higher ups at Freo are impressed with whatever happens this year, which we're obviously yet to see.

Paying $100 for a family to watch the footy and we sit in the sun and cant see anything. Realy AFL? Just not good enough. Without the fans you don't have a product!

C'mon AD don't dodge the question, i would like your opinion.

He has Peter, he will want a yes or no from Freo within a couple of weeks, nothing surer.

He has history of jumping for the right price.

Today was the Charlie to get excited about Macca. I think the message to take the game on really helped him.

When do you suggest they extend his contract ? (a) Now (b) end of the year (c) half way through next year (d) end of current contract ?
Jonboy
Roar Rookie
Right AD i have but are Freo ready to extend his contract ? If they wait till the end of the year he will not get a opportunity to have a crack at the vacancies arising, He has to think of his future. David King said he would love him at the Roos, and he is much loved in Victoria. Personally i think Freo should not rush a extension.

Ross going to Carlton is as likely as the jack darling to the Bulldogs rumours that came out this week.
Jonboy
Roar Rookie
Probably not Pete but i hope so, the media in Victoria love him,i f he was offered a big 5 year contract i reckon he would be out Perth.

Oh, you've used that Lyon -> Carlton line a few times this week, Jonboy. I find it staggeringly unlikely; particularly given Lyon admitted this week he wanted to extend his current contract at Freo.

Similar to 95 bears would be a great result for the club.
Macca

Yep but if he kicks. 9 goals every 5 games ( like he has in the last 5) for the rest of the year he will end up with 29 goals, just 5 less than last year for effectively 2 games less.
