Following their Round 1 loss, the Carlton Blues and Melbourne Demons will be eager to get a win on the board to resume their seasons. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4:35pm (AEST).

This game is set to say a lot about either team. Both teams expected improved seasons, so a loss today will be a setback as both teams face tough opponents ahead in Geelong and Essendon following Round 2.

The Blues are expected to transition out of their rebuilding phase and transition into a finals team with their star recruits in the off-season in Eddie Betts, Jack Martin and Jack Newnes boosting their best 22. Fans have been waiting and it is now time for the Blues.

A win today will give them some good hope and confidence for the season while a loss will mount pressure on them as they face Geelong next week and could end up 0-3.

After making it to the preliminary final in 2018, the Demons have disappointed since and fans are expecting them to step it up this season and get back into finals contention. If they are to achieve success this season, games like today are a must-win.

Harley Bennell will play his first game of AFL since 2017 and his third since 2015. It is a remarkable comeback to the game after countless hours spent in rehab for a day like this to come. Bennell is set to play a maximum of 70 minutes today out of a total of approximately 100 minutes in the game.

West Australian youngsters Luke Jackson and Trent Rivers will also debut for the Demons. Both 18-year-olds come into the side after a number of omissions for the Demons including Charlie Spargo, who was banned for breaching AFL COVID-19 protocols for two weeks.

The Blues have Eddie Betts coming in for his first game back at the club after his time at the Adelaide Crows. Marc Pittonet will debut for the Blues after playing seven games in three seasons before coming to Carlton from the Hawks. He is set to play a major role in the ruck up against Max Gawn.

The Blues will be fired up with their new-look list, while the Dees will hope to resume the season strongly and progress after a disappointing season.

Prediction
It will be a close one. After seeing the Blues in Round 1 against the Tigers with the exception of their poor start, I will go with them this afternoon. The new-look Blues line-up appeals to me. If the cohesion is there, the Blues will win today and go on to have a good season.

Carlton by 12 points.

Lever was able to roam free to continuously be third man up against McKay not because McKay didn't monster Jetta but Levers man didn't make him accountable. If JSOS had played instead of Lang I don't think Lever could have been free

It has to be McGovern's spot, he only has a crack when he feels like it. At least Levi gives his all every time. McGovern needs to turn his attitude around before his career is cut short and turns into a what-if. We are seriously lacking outside speed and inside grunt. Murphy is done but we have no one to replace him, only kid's. 2 things we desperately need going forward is at least 1 proven midfielder and some outside speed, someone that can break the lines but if we keep putting up performances like last night then no one will want to come. Zach Williams and Tom Papley would be a good start

One of those forward entries was from Mckay who kicked it straight to Gawn when Casboult was alone 30 metres away. McGovern dropped an easy mark 20 metres out in the last quarter. McKay should have monstered Jetta and because he didn't it meant Lever could roam free. I thought the forward setup was really disappointing given the domination in the last 3 quarters. I agree the entries were not great - particularly Walsh he looked rushed throughout the game.

Macca - I'm not sure he was smashed early. Gawn provided some great tapwork but I'd blame the whole midfield group as they were awful defensively. It meant the Melbourne players had a clear run from stoppages. That isn't Pittonet's fault. He actually was competitive in ruck even in the 1st quarter. I thought Pittonet showed a lot in this game both in the ruck and around the ground.

Not much use having 3 tall forwards if they are not marking the ball inside 50. Better just having 2 and another forward who can pressure the opposition backmen. I would rather add JSOS and only 2 key forwards.

Poor ball use coming in and Melbourne flooded back hard. That forward line hasn't played together before tonight, we need to persist (although du p Lang) and the rewards will come.

But where did they take those marks Macca? Not too many inside 50.

Not sure we can be too critical of the talls, McGovern had 7 marks (equal most of the game), Casboult and McKay 5 (equal 5th). The way the ball was kicked in was more the issue. On the plus side the half back line looked really good once they stopped being bypassed straight from the centre clearance

Yeah, Walsh had 8 inside 50 entries, the most of any player. Don’t know how many were successful but I would say most were not.

Yes Pete, would much rather have only two talls in the fwd 50. Would have JSOS taking the place of either Levi or McGovern.

I think In those guys defence, your forward entries were woeful. I’d be interested in Sam Walsh efficiency rating? I remember at least 4 times in the last quarter alone he kicked the ball basically over leading forwards heads rather than to their advantage. Kids got a magnet to get the footy. But needs to improve on what he does with it Still far too reliant on Cripps and I don’t think he had his best night (you can’t be supermen every week). McGovern needs a rocket. He’s way too passive.

Harry looks lost too often. Agree every time we play McKay Casboult and McGovern forward it fails. Too many tall forwards and they seem to get confused about their role and what space to run too. Backfired badly last year so surprised they still persist with that setup.

2 goals 6 behinds from set shots is very frustrating as well as missing easy shots on the run. Very disappointed in Harry’s game especially when at times Jetta was on him. The kicking into the forward 50 was very poor as well. Perhaps they need to change the forward 50 structure and not have Harry, Levi & McGovern playing in there at the same time.

How can they keep looking so woeful in the 1st qtr? It’s hard to watch

18 scoring shots to 12 48 inside 50’s to 40, give up 5 goals to no score in the first, have 7 goals against befor kicking 1 and hit the post 3 times to lose by just 1 point in what was really a must win game in this shortened season – it is hard to put in to words just how frustrating it is to be a Carlton supporter!! The positive is that we continue to show we can turn games around when previously we just dropped our heads but we simply have to get switched on from the start and be better with ball in hand. Edit – FMD I was having dinner during the 3rd quarter and didn’t see McGovern’s shank in the video above – what the f,

How could it possibly be Demons by plenty? Carlton were dominat for 3 quarters and just couldn’t kick goals. They don’t deserve it after (yet again) a woeful 1st qtr

MATCH REPORT Melbourne Demons win by a point! Dees are looking to push for the eight this season while the Blues are looking to win games. This game showed no promise in achieving either. The Blues will suffer more from losing the four points on offer. They play Geelong next week and could quickly go 0-3 to start the season. The Demons have Essendon next week which gives them an opportunity to improve from this performance and get another win. Positive out of Melbourne’s game was their first two quarters, debutant Luke Jackson, Christian Petracca’s game and Harley Bennell getting through the game. For the Blues, it was their second-half, first gamer Marc Pittonet and Carlton’s ability to come back from being 42 points behind. Carlton’s Nic Newman went down early in the game with an injury to his knee. Overall there was good and bad for both sides which gives them work to do. If there is anything this game taught us, it is probably that neither team will be in the eight in 2020. FULL TIME Carlton 7.11.53 Melbourne 8.6.54
