The second preliminary final is upon us, as Collingwood host the GWS Giants on a Saturday evening at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4:35pm AEST.
This time two years ago, Collingwood had been bundled out of the AFL season courtesy of a nine-win, 13th placed campaign that had coach Nathan Buckley under serious scrutiny.
The Giants, for their part, were lining up on this ground against Richmond for a preliminary final that they would go on to lose. Tonight, fortunes have changed for both teams.
Collingwood has long shaken off their tumultuous 2017 and have gone onto featured in two finals series and a grand final, with a second grand final well within grasp if they conquer the under-pressure Giants.
It’s an opposition that have never progressed to a grand final – and an opposition that have seen their chances tonight begin to evaporate with a week of serious setbacks.
While they’ve looked superb in two wins so far in this finals series, the Giants confirmed that neither Brett Deledio or Stephen Congilio would be fit to play.
And then, they lost Lachie Whitfield to appendicitis.
And then, confirmation that Toby Greene’s ban for eye-gouging stood (after two appeals).
It’s been a rough week, evidently, but Leon Cameron’s men can take small comfort from the fact that they’ve defeated Collingwood three of the past five times they’ve played them – including at the MCG in early 2018.
That’s the optimistic view – given a more pessimistic view reveals they’ve never won a game with at least one of Greene or Whitfield in the starting 22.
Collingwood have a couple of woes of their own, with stars Jordan De Goey and Levi Greenwood ruled out, robbing them of the pair’s talents – and De Goey’s flair.
Apart from that, the Pies are relatively healthy heading into this cut-throat final, and given they’ve been extremely fortunate in having a week off after their first-up win, Collingwood will hold an advantage there, too.
Both sides have made two changes apiece. The Pies have replaced the De Goey and Greenwood duo with Ben Reid (playing his 150th game) and James Aish.
The Giants have replaced Whitfield and Greene – two enormous talents – with emerging youngster Ian Hill and former Pie Lachlan Keefe.
Prediction
GWS are going to be up against a fierce crowd, a formidable opponent and the weight of pressure hanging over them after a disastrous week.
They’re the tipsters’ underdogs here, and that’s fair enough. The Giants are a very good team – and remain so even without some of their stars – but they are no doubt going to miss the talents of Greene and Whitfield especially.
Collingwood are going to be too much of a challenge for the fledging Giants, and will head through to their second consecutive grand final.

I think De Boer had a fair say on sidebottom and pendles quiet nights. Great game!

Hair-raisingly fabulous. A handful of supporters v 70,0000 baying for blood, three of their best not playing, a damaged captain, massive home-ground disadvantage...what.a.win. Will do wonders for AFL in Sydney. Delighted GF will not be Richmond V Collingwood (what a yawn that would have been). Hearty congrats Giants from a Swans supporter. Looking forward to anti-hero Toby strutting his stuff on the sacred turf of the home of football next weekend. Go Giants.

Tigers, Pies, Power, Suns have best sing-along songs. Lions great too but hard not to think of La Marseillaise - best lyrics though. Very partisan to Fitzroy and Bears. (Les Marseillaise continually voted most beautiful anthem worldwide for a reason). Hate the Eagles’ song. Dull, wrong/too low key sounds dated and not *classically* dated in the good way (like Pies or Bombers songs).

Awseome effort by the Giants and they have been great to watch through the final series. They have skill and they have ticker and next week should be a great game. BTW whats up with the clowns in the ARC? If GWS lost by less than a kick it would have been an unmitigated disaster for the AFL and impossible to explain to the sporting community.

I was half the same. Wanted Pies to win and be a real threat to Tigers. But also didn’t want pies to make it.

Alrighty, thank you so much for joining me this evening. It’s been a whirlwind one. I’m back tomorrow to blog the SANFL Grand Final, but in terms of AFL blogging, that’s me done for the year. Thanks for reading or commentating on my blogs through this season, and enjoy next week’s grand final - whoever you’re barracking for. Bye for now.

It’s a great song. Loved it. Go GWS. Can’t help but jump on them here in Sydney. There’s a good chance my daughter may become a GWS fan. It certainly won’t be those ugly Swans.

GWS have held on after a stirring final term Collingwood rally, with the New South Welshman clinching a four point win to advance through to their first grand final in their history. A lacklustre, low scoring first half opened up into a second half quite literally of two halves, with a brilliant third quarter for the Giants coupled with a sensational fourth quarter rally for the Magpies illustrating the best of football - and producing one of the best preliminary final finishes in a fair few years. That first half saw Collingwood hold three point lead at both the quarter-time and half-time breaks, but there wasn’t a whole lot in the way of highlights. The second stanza, in particular, was a defensive stalemate, with both sides enduring draining defensive efforts that produced just one goal apiece. With a scoreline locked at 20-17 at the primary break, the wet weather footy seemed unlikely to produce anything special. That simply wasn’t true. The Giants’ five goal third term saw them leap out to a stunning 26 point lead after a dominant ‘premiership quarter’, with Collingwood relegated to a meagre 23 point scoreline and a very difficult task to get back into the game. The Giants, honestly, looked in the hot seat. The Magpies weren’t deterred. An early goal to Jeremy Cameron made the Pies shrink a little more in my seats; before Stephenson and Thomas added majors to breathe life into the Pies campaign - the latter an extremely obvious missed ‘touched’ call. The Magpies kept going, adding more goals and shrinking the margin to just four points. Alas, it was too little, too late. No Greene? No Whitfield? No worries. Taranto, Haynes and - especially - Williams stood up strong for the brilliant Giants, with Josh Kelly adding support through the midfield. Mumford was shaded by his All-Australian opponent in Grundy, but fellow tall-men Jeremy Cameron and Jeremy Finlayson provided a boisterous performance up forward to bolster the Greene-less attack. Collingwood were very well served by Crisp, Howe and Maynard - with the latter duo’s defensive work a highlight. Stephenson and Thomas worked well up forward, but Sidebottom, Treloar and Pendlebury had indifferent days - their quiet(wish) performances perhaps a sign early on in the day that Collingwood were far from their best. GWS advance through to next Saturday’s title decider against premiership-favourites Richmond, whilst the Magpies head into what’ll be a long and illuminating off season. Collingwood: 7.10 (52) GWS Giants: 8.8 (56)

Wow. One part of me wanted Collingwood to win (very rare) so there would be a Tigers vs Pies Grand Final but it was not to be. Oddly found myself going for GWS in this game (first time ever).
