Nick Daicos returns as Collingwood take on GWS in a preliminary final blockbuster, with a grand final berth waiting for the victor. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:50pm (AEST).
After the most impressive of seasons, Collingwood welcomes back its most dangerous weapon in the form of Daicos for the battle against a Giants team that has simply stormed home, winning 11 of its last 13 matches.
After a solid start where some narrow losses had new coach Adam Kingsley at his wits end, GWS steadied and excelled, eventually knocking Port Adelaide out of the running last weekend. They now enter a prelim that looked highly unlikely earlier in the year.
Collingwood are a different kettle of fish, with all eyes them throughout the season and the expectation of an appearance on the final day of the season more than realistic.
Things did get a little wobbly for the Pies across the final month of the season with Daicos absent and a few concerns creeping into their group. However, Collingwood do look to have settled, and the dramatic win against Melbourne in the qualifying final reminded everyone of their class.
Led by Scott Pendlebury, Darcy Moore, Jordan De Goey and the two Daicos boys, the Pies have weapons right across the field. Sadly, once again Taylor Adams is out injured, and Jack Ginnivan is likely to play the role of the sub.
The Giants are taking the same team that stunned the Power in Adelaide last week into a contest they believe they can win. Toby Greene is in scintillating form, and Sam Taylor, Harry Himmelberg, Josh Kelly and Tom Green will also play key roles in what looms as a feisty encounter in the early exchanges.
Prediction
No one really ever deserves anything in sport, yet Collingwood have clearly been the benchmark team in 2023. Should the Pies produce the discipline and control that Craig McRae has instilled in them, they should have the measure of the Giants.
However, the big, big sound is real and there could be a stunning upset on the cards if a few things fall the way of the visitors and their form continues.
GWS by two points.

Not sure what some of you are watching - as a neutral I thought GWS got rub of the green

I think you did. Many times over.

And you scream over and over about how Ginnivan doesn’t deserve the free kicks for high contact when he drops his knees - but now the umpire doesn’t pay the high contact when the player drops his knees and somehow you’re still complaining

I feel you Tassie. But my attitude is anyone who wastes their life trying to make other ppl feel bad when their team wins? There is a special kind of sadness in that. I dealt with it all last year. I say enjoy it brother. Collingwood were awesome - like a champion boxer: just won’t go dowb

Spewing hatred? Where how? As for Ginnivan the questions you raise should be directed to your supporters, they are the ones who constantly claim Ginnivan is umpired under his own set of rules and flood this site if just one marginal high free kick is missed- yet where is the outrage now?

As much as it pains me to say it, Congratulations to collingwood and all their supporters, you guys definitely deserve it after the 2 years you've had would of been a failure to not make it technically so well done peoples, omfg eddie is going to be even more unbearable than he already is this week.lol. the lions I think will get the job done today and then it'll be history repeating itself with lions v collingwood gf, for all us none collingwood supporters for our own sanity hopefully brissy can repeat the results from the last gf too.lol.

Yup. There were at least 4 of the most blatant free kicks you’ll ever see ignored in the last. It was that bad the commentators started mentioning it, which they never do for Collingwood. Unfortunately it stains what was a really good game.

12 free kicks each and 2 50 metre penalties to Giants 0 to Collingwood to all you nut job conspiracy theorist haters. Surely if the AFL had a dog in the race it would be the expansion team. Bigoted losers

A lot of you people need to take a stick out of your ass. The Giants were given 2 50 metre penalties that resulted in a goal over the stupid stand rule. Not incorrect by the letter of the law but easily let go of umpires had vested interests. How about the umpire blowing the whistle for our of bounds when the boundary umpire didn't move. A Collingwood player had posession ants was about to send it i50 but had to be recalled for a bounce. Why can't we just enjoy what a brilliant tug of war that was, but ultimately their had to be a loser. Just like Collingwood last year against the swans. Just because your team isn't their you have to spew this conspiracy crap that the AFL want Collingwood to win. Why have they lost so many grand finals then. You're an embarrassment to yourselves and don't deserve this game, piss off and watch soccer.

I've really given up arguing with macca. It really is a pointless exercise. Their were times, I will admit, where I wasn't sure if I'd gone too hard in my rhetorics back to his hate but to me he lost as all credibility when just last week he said their was skill in winning close games because his blues were on the right end of the result, and here he is again tonight spewing hatred onto a team that fought their guts out against a mighty opponent, and after deriding Collingwood of that exact thing all year. He talks of how pies fans would react if a high tackle were missed to ginnivan like the one that apparently happened to a Giants player. Isn't that contradictory? Is it worse if one player gets over another? Or do all supporters yell for their team? I thought that was the point. He will never get the irony that the things he shouts about, he is as guilty as anyone. Go pies

The quenelle and escargots have been superb, and yes, plenty of the rose de Provence. Sounds like I missed a classic - congrats to all the Pies posters.

Not suggesting anything against Collingwood...they finished above GWS. Now a GF, that’s different.

Like all corporates, executive bonuses are set on short term goals. As if they care what’s good for the game in 10 or 20 years when they’re no longer there.
