An ancient finals rivalry writes another chapter as the Geelong Cats and Collingwood Magpies clash in a blockbuster semi-final at The Gabba. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:40pm (AEDT).

Perennially the finals bridesmaids, the Cats need to click into gear to avoid an embarrassing straight-sets exit after looking like the favourites for most of the year. After winning six in a row after the home-and-away season’s halfway mark, Geelong’s last three matches have seen them get outclassed by Richmond, narrowly sneak past the lowly Swans and kick themselves out of the contest against the Power. They need to get back to their best.

They’ll up against a resurgent Magpies side full of confidence after they pulled off an almighty upset against West Coast in their elimination final last week. Collingwood were given no chance against the Eagles, having spluttered their way into the top eight and looking very much to be making up the numbers, but they pulled off a great upset and will head into this clash completely undeterred by their underdog status.

Collingwood took the points when these sides clashed in Perth earlier in the year, while also prevailing in last year’s qualifying final by ten points. This will be the 25th final between these clubs – the most between two teams in VFL/AFL history.

True but I just think their inexperience in finals could be a weakness. Melbourne have done it so regularly and have shown they can win away from home, have imposing forwards and some pace and skill in the back half... Got to get there first but it's theirs to lose atm

Yep. When your side's bringing the pain, it's never boring e.g. 2014 GF but neutrals probably didn't love it

tell us honestly birdman, when the hawks were in their pomp & routinely belting teams in one sided matches, did u find it boring ? personally i like a close exciting match as a neutral observer but dont find games where richmond win easily the least bit boring (mind u we have many years of being flogged to make up for)

For neutrals, the Footy Gods turned into the Soup Nazi this weekend. "No more good finals footy for YOU!!"

Maybe but Panthers deserve favouritism after the season they've had.

Yes, that's when they actually play a game out of Vic. This season excluded.

That's what happens when you complain about jersey's. With a thumping like that they should be behind bars. The jerseys are very apt.

Yup... Geelong's accuracy wasn't great when not having a set shot. Could have been real ugly if it was

He surely must be kept away from bounce duties on GF night. That was embarrassing.
