Two premiership contenders, the Geelong Cats and Port Adelaide Power will be eager to flex their top-four muscles as they meet at Metricon Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:50pm (AEST).
Port Adelaide have vanquished all doubts: they are an authentic premiership contender this season. There was an increasingly acknowledged opinion of the Power being just that, but last weekend’s 21 point win over reigning premiers Richmond solidified it. That win was their fourth from their past five games (the only aberration being a shock loss to St Kilda), and they remain a game clear in first.
Without Port’s fanfare, the Cats have been moving along rather nicely too. They bounced back from losses to the Eagles and Collingwood with comfortable wins over Freo, the Kangaroos and St Kilda to begin the round in third in a contested battle for the top-four. They need to keep winning though, given just how congested the middle of the eight is.
Port Adelaide have the benefit of a longer break (six days rather than the Cats’ four), but are travelling from Adelaide, as opposed to Geelong who have been in Queensland since Monday night’s win.
Metricon Stadium has been a very happy hunting ground for the Power this season, with the South Australians winning all four games they’ve played here so far. Geelong are yet to play at the venue, but in recent times most of their games on the Gold Coast have been comfortable wins over the Suns.

Maybe. I don’t know if this is the best example, just because of how badly Port played. To me, it’s like playing at home. There’s no question you have an advantage, but it doesn’t mean you can’t be beaten.

Joel what i meant to say was that the Cats are playing awesome footy at the moment. As you well know some teams are unbeatable at times. Like the Lions, Hawks etc, a few years ago. Nothing a coach can do to stop their run.I wasn`t trying to be condescending.Port played a great game against the tigers the week before. The Cats are going to be hard to beat come the big dance.

No doubt, but there's a strong argument to be made for the 4 day breaks not having the effect some said theyight :silly:

They had five days before playing the Saints. Port had a big advantage in this game. They should have performed better.

Same, could of uses a big defender rich now to replace Stratton or Frawley. The good thing is the bloke is playing regular footy and killing it.

Spot on Pussy. Just watching the replay. Everything just came off for the Cats. Handballs, kicks etc just came off. So often the steal and rebound where just avoided. Apart from the small weak full back issue, the will be there when it matters.

Port had a bad game tonight but I'm amazed at some of the glass half empty supporters. The majority of AFL supporters would love to be in Ports' position. Still one game ahead on top, it doesn't get much better than that. They still have some good young players who will be even better and more consistent next year. I think from what I have seen from them this season they will be real premiership contenders next year. The Hinkley haters appear worse than the Scott haters.

Huge difference being that Port were near full strength last night and didn't offer any resistance. The Richmond side you speak of were severely depleted.

Geelong thumped richmond during the 2019 home and away season, richmond bounced back. Port can do the same.

Put a line through Port. Another example of Kenny being unable to adjust on the fly when the game isn't on Port's terms. No plan B, no tactical nous. Took an eternity and them playing out of their skins to put away a depleted Richmond on their home turf last week and unable to match the Cats who, too, were coming off a 4 day break. Make no mistake, Port not up to it when the whips get cracking.

Heard of a bloke called DeGoey Peter played a blinder out since then.

Like West Coast against the Pies. Still, Cats have belted two “contenders “ by 10 goals each in 4 days. Could Danger be finally getting his flag?

Disagree there mate! Port were simply outplayed on the night, nothing more. As mentioned previously, I don’t believe any team would’ve beaten Geelong last night, simply too hard, too hungry and basically unstoppable!

Pies were the better team on the day. Pies are a good side who do match up very good against the cats in my opinion, just you guys are missing about a third of your senior side at the moment making it tougher for consistency. Probably a very good thing you’ve already played the cats, lol. Hopefully the Tigers will be at full strength when we play the cats especially an Astbury inclusion would be good, so we can have a red hot go at em!

I thought the same. Port looked skinny against the big Cat bodies

I still can’t believe the Pies beat the Cats!

Yes, could very well be the case. However the cats record in finals over their last few appearances tells me otherwise. Don’t get me wrong, Cats are absolutely flying at the moment and deservedly should be regarded as a serious contender for the flag, but I think even the more optimistic cats supporters will be a little bit nervous come finals time. Probably justified that the cats aren’t clear premiership favourites just yet with the bookies. What we witnessed last night was a cat’s team that are very very good and really did throw the whole kitchen and the sink at Port, like Yats mentioned previously, lol, but the result was compounded by a very very poor display by a tired Port who probably had not much left in the tank, after putting the after burners on in the last qtr of the win over my Tigers ????

Have to agree there Neil. To be honest, that’s the best 4 qtr effort I’ve seen from the cats in a while without a doubt, frightening stuff, lol. Too, think before the game cats were at 13$ for the flag, dropped down to $7 after the game!
