Match preview:

It’s a cut-throat, Saturday afternoon elimination final, as the GWS Giants host the Western Bulldogs at Giants Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3:20pm AEST.

It’s the second elimination final, and for one of these teams their premiership dreams will come to a close in around three hours time. For the other, a semi-final clash with either Brisbane or Richmond (depending on who wins tonight) awaits.

The sixth-placed Giants and seventh-placed Bulldogs both won their Round 23 clashes and have both had the pre-finals bye to prepare for this afternoon’s clash, but it’s integral to highlight the home and away season’s penultimate clash.

In that game, played at this same venue in a similar time slot, the Bulldogs embarrassed the Giants with a powerful second half which saw the bound-for-finals Giants lose their second lacklustre effort in a row, after falling to the Hawks a week prior.

The Dogs last loss was a Gabba defeat to Brisbane, having won eight of their eleven games post-bye – they’re in scintillating form, and given they’ve won a premiership from seventh position before, the Giants are right to be wary.

This is the second final these two teams have played in their histories – the first, and also played at this ground, was 2016’s preliminary final which the Bulldogs snuck a superb win to make it through to the Grand Final, and was also the first of three consecutive finals series the Giants have lost a final.

The Giants, though, will be buoyed by the returns of several key players. Their official ins for this final include Brett Deledio, Jacob Hopper, Nick Haynes and Toby Greene, with Adam Tomlinson, Ian Hill, Isaac Cumming and Lachlan Keeffe all omitted from the Giants outfit.

Two influential players in Shane Mumford and Coleman Medallist Jeremy Cameron – neither of whom played in the Round 22 loss against today’s opposition – are also confirmed starters for the elimination final.

The Dogs are unchanged for the massive clash.

Prediction
The Dogs have a majority of the public backing, and are the tipster favourites headed into this afternoon’s clash. And I can see why they’re favourites: they’re in brilliant form, they’ve won on this ground – both three weeks ago and in a cut throat final – before, and they’re no doubt going to have the backing of a large travelling crowd.

But the Giants aren’t going to be easy beats. They’ve got a strong team – certainly stronger than the team that capitulated against the Dogs a few week back. I’m going to tip the Giants. Potentially foolish, but the Dogs dream will come to an end here. GWS to advance through to a semi-final.

A bizarre place to watch footy. It felt like I was in the middle of a GWS ad the whole time. And what’s with the pop-up on the scoreboard telling us what the free kick is for? I know no one knows the rules in Sydney but that’s just embarrassing.

There was not a crowd of 19000. The top deck were all closed. Off you go to Canberra and leave Sydney to rectangular sports!

That was remarkable. Dogs winning the 2nd Q must have given a glimmer but that’s not enough in September

I know that is an after thought, who in the last last eight weeks did the Dogs beat?

The GWS Giants have prevailed in their elimination final match up against the Western Bulldogs, defeating their disappointing Victorian rivals by 58 points. With the Doggies producing one of their most lacklustre performances in months, a strong Giants outfit managed to dominate much of the game and win through to next week’s semi final slots. The Giants doubled their opponents inside fifty counts, out-tackled and out-possessed their overawed rivals, in a sharp turn around from both 2016’s preliminary final and their Round 22 clash, both of which the Bulldogs won. A first quarter dominated by the Giants set the tone for the game, with only frustrating inaccuracy preventing them from opening up a wider lead. The Dogs, as many expected, fought their way back into a clash - aided by the Giants inaccuracy - and closed the gap to under a goal twice within the second and third stanzas, but were unable to snatch the lead at any point and watched as a slick Giants team opened up their margins again. The Bulldogs’ best phase of play was a three goal purple patch in the latter stages of the second term in which they showcased their barnstorming play that won them a position in finals, but they were unable to keep up the momentum. A one score final quarter buried the Dogs for the final time, with the Giants piling on three final goals - and a heap of inaccurate misses - to blow out the margin. Lachie Whitfield was far and away the Giants best, with 29 touches and a stunning opening term major, whilst Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto also accumulated plenty of the footy. Heath Shaw’s 25 touches made him a rock in the backline, whilst I thoroughly enjoyed Toby Greene’s bombastic clash. Greene, Josh Kelly and Jeremy Finlayson all booted three majors, whilst Coleman Medallist Jeremy Cameron booted an inaccurate 2.3. Jack Macrae was the Bulldogs best in a losing effort, with an admirable 32 touches leading all comers. He had support from Pat Lipinski and Lachie Hunter, but Josh Dunkley and Marcus Bontempelli had extremely disappointing games. Aaron Naughton - who failed to play out the game after suffering a serious knee injury - booted two majors, with no other Bulldog booting more than one. The Giants will face either Brisbane or Richmond away next weekend, whilst the Dogs stunning finals berth comes to an end before it really ever began. GWS Giants: 16.17 (113) Western Bulldogs: 8.6 (54)

I would be hoping they could but don't think so. They haven't beaten the tigers at the G.
