After a tumultuous few days, the Hawthorn Hawks and coach Alastair Clarkson head to Tasmania looking to upset the Brisbane Lions. Follow the action from the Apple Isle with live scores on The Roar from 2:10pm (AEST).

After nearly seventeen years and four premierships, Clarkson’s tenure at the Hawks looks set to come to an ignominious end. The master coach will exit the club a year ahead of schedule, following the collapse of the mooted coaching transition to Sam Mitchell in a year’s time.

It’s notable, though, that the players’ support of ‘Clarko’ – and vice versa – has never wavered this year, so the Hawks could easily rise to the emotion of the week and pull off a stirring victory. Veteran Shaun Burgoyne has been recalled after being name as the medical sub in last week’s loss to Adelaide.

The Lions have an emotional recall of their own, with former Cat Nakia Cockatoo lining up for his first official game for the club after a string of injuries. Named as the medical sub in last week’s come-from-behind win over Gold Coast, Cockatoo could be just the injection of pace the Lions need to fight off their currently patchy form.

Sitting fifth, a loss would be a hammer blow to the Lions’ chances of forcing back into the top four.

Im slowly learning that although I'm almost a guaranteed bet to turn a favourite into a non favourite.lol. with those specials they do on tab though thats my new theory pick 2 that are pretty much guaranteed than a roughy to inflate your odds and as long as the sure things come in you get your money back at worse.lol. I had port to win, Charlie for 2 and ollie for 25+. My mates ridiculous bet was for the straight out win for port. Risking 6k to make a 2k profit though dam thats ballsy.lol.

Bet big and safe, win big, it's the best way, I've got a mate that worked for sportsbet, he says that don't even bother betting against the faves and never bet more than 3 legs, bit diff now with the same game multi, but if you follow those rules you have more of a chance. Would you believe I missed the Port Multi cause I slipped Taranto in to get 20 touches........he got 14, when does that ever happen? I looked at that Freo v Tiges game and went......nup, Freo will prob win that, cause they don't like high draft picks lol. What was the 6k bet?

Badly handled by the board and Kennett in particular, and parting ways with the best coach seems ridiculous but he has frustrated me with his stubborn loyalty to some senior players (except Roughead who served better in his last season), conservative game plan and trading decisions over the past 4 years. Time will tell but Sam Mitchell will take the reins with a mountain of pressure on his shoulders - take this group in the right direction and it will look like a masterstroke, stagnate and the board will face a challenge and the HFC will be a joke. Personally, I reckon we will be ok but I'd like Kennett gone ASAP as he has outstayed his usefullness as a strong advocate for the club which is not to say he hasn't achieved a lot like an AFLW licence and Dingley. As for Clarkson, he may take a year off before returning to coaching but he will be choosy with his next gig regardless of how much money is thrown at him.

What are your thoughts on the coaching change over birdman?

Now that’s somewhat unfair. I believe Joey could almost certainly have been a number one forward but you have to have the right personnel around him, and not rely solely on him to kick a winning score. If you remember back to 2017 it was also a career year for orazio Fantasia with 44 goals, cale hooker with 41, Anthony McDonald Tippungwuti with 34 goals, and josh green/James Stewart chiming in with a couple dozen of their own. The bombers had a fast and flexible forward line that was capable of putting the hurt on, the lions need something similar but with the loss of Hipwood they don’t.

Late to the party as I'm currently hiding from Covid in Far North Qld :silly: Awesome effort from the Hawks today led by some seniors in O'Meara, Bruest and Wingard and some newbies in Reeves, Bramble, Moore and amazingly, Conor Nash who hopefully could emulate Darcy Parish as a reinvented gun mid if he continues in that vein. Lions def. off their tucker but TBF the Hawks didnt let them in until the last qtr after Bruest and Lewis left the field. Fingers crossed that Bruest has avoided a serious knee injury but it didn't look good.

Commiserations, for now. Always liked the Lions so I hope it turns around in the short term. Not enough to beat my Demons of course, but I think everyone knows the Lions at their best is the final piece of the Top Four this year.

Speed back there is a huge problem as well yes. They brought Ah Chee in hope we would be the rebounding half back flanker, but he's not quite lived up to expectation. Rich & Birchall are pretty much the same player- and can't really have two of them together but our Coach seems to keep going down that track. Hopefully after the last month he might try something a little bit different. As we should still be a chance, but with our current set-up we not going anywhere.

I would say the best advice for success is to never do what Carlton does, but more seriously I see your point. Is speed out the backline an issue? Sorry for the questions, I just don't see enough of the Lions to know. Useless anecdote: my best mate used to box with Adams before he got drafted by the Bulldogs - said it was like fighting a brick wall that hit back.

With good reason at the moment. In a mighty form slump

Gardiner been out for the majority of the year. Adams has been holding the backline together pretty well... But once he's gone down, the dam walls have spilled open. We really only have ourselves to blame. Back end of last year had the opportunity to keep Josh Walker as backline depth and we delisted him. We need to do a Carlton and go and recruit a couple of good half back flankers

I picked Hawthorn. A combination of playing in Tasmania and Brisbane clearly out of form.

Very proud boys. Bit closer at the end than it should have been but got the result. Given everything that's happened this week, great resolve.

Didn't know about the backline: thanks for the update. Andrews also seems to be not at his best this year.

Lions will be fair game in the first elimination final. Most teams would fancy their chances.

We can still score ok, we just can't stop momentum in the back half. Missing our best two one on one defenders in Adams & Gardiner is our biggest issue.

True, their not the same beyond the GABBA, forgot about that. And Daniher...yeah he's in my Supercoach team. as reliable for me as for the Lions.

Great win Hawks, set it up in the first 3 quarters. Ran out of puff in the end but expected the Lions to come home hard. Well done to the Hawthorn footy club that showed unity. Great clubs know how to respond.

Their problem now is that their fwd line is built around Daniher. Just ask Essendon how that worked. Not No.1 fwd by any stretch. That coupled with them not being able to play away from home and they're done
