Round five of the AFL premiership season comes to a close with the traditional Easter Monday fixture between Hawthorn and Geelong at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores, coverage and analysis from 3:20pm (AEST).
The Cats have the edge in this fixture over the past decade and they won by less than a goal in last year’s clash. We are looking at two very different teams to the ones presented to us in 2021.
Hawthorn were monstered by a resurgent St Kilda side last week. Their midfield has been a headache for new coach, Sam Mitchell, in recent weeks after they were heavily outmatched by the likes of Jack Steele, Seb Ross, Jack Sinclair and Brad Crouch last Sunday.
Tom Mitchell and Jaeger O’Meara were strong in the engine room but James Worpel failed to fire and has since been omitted from today’s clash.
Luke Breust and Mitch Lewis contributed well on the scoreboard and should continue their form into this afternoon, challenging the Cats’ defence.
Geelong will welcome back two very important players into their side this afternoon: their captain Joel Selwood, and All-Australian defender, Tom Stewart.
The Cats had a thrilling victory at home last Friday night against the Lions. They will take a lot of confidence from their performance up forward and in defence, after coming away victor’s by ten points.
Tom Hawkins and Jeremy Cameron are arguably the most important and powerful forward line-duo in the competition. When one has a quieter night, the other steps up and kicks a bag of goals.
Last week, Tom Hawkins did just that, including the controversial match-winner late in the fourth quarter. These two will be vital once again.
Prediction
The Hawks are on a path toward rebuilding a great side and the Cats are right in the premiership window once again. Cats by 32 points.

It was .Also nice to see Irishmen Tuohy and Nash having a friendly chat on the field after the siren.

Same way Hawks had nobody on the goal line when Cameron kicked low on his wrong foot to get Cats' first goal. Sometimes we forget the players are a lot younger than most of us on here and liable to do dumb things like we did in our immature twenties.

Agree. Significant unfairness in Collingwood, Hawthorn, Carlton, Richmond and Essendon not having to play at GMHBA. I suspect Geelong want to play home games against those sides at the G for the money and/or the experience of playing on the G given its different dimensions. But there has to be balance. Melbourne, the Dogs, St Kilda and North continually get sent down the highway every year to make up the 9 game quota because those other clubs don't play there. If Geelong insists on playing the other clubs in Melbourne, there should nevertheless be rotation - one year Collingwood goes, next year Hawthorn, etc.

Cats will likely be preliminary finalists Yattz but seen a fair way off Melbourne and maybe even Brisbane away from GMHBA

Eagles' draw is the hardest. They've had forty players on the field so far. It doesn't matter who they face, it's weighted against them.

Yup. As wàs Wingard, Mitchell, Bruest and Gunston. I would have been ok with another club coming in for Wingard and O'Meara.

Gunston still has the annoying habit of a goal whenever he goes near it.

So which were the games the haven’t run out this season? Could this be the first, maybe in the wet too? Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story.
