The Geelong Cats welcome back Patrick Dangerfield and a host of other stars for their trip to the city of churches to battle the Port Adelaide Power. Tune into Thursday night footy’s return right here on The Roar with live scores from 7:40pm (AEST).
After weeks of demand, the Thursday night slot is back for AFL fans to enjoy, for the first time since Round 15. Featuring two serious premiership contenders, it should be a doozy, too.
Dangerfield is back for just his third match of the season, the 2016 Brownlow Medallist having endured a torrid campaign through both suspension and injury. With Mitch Duncan and Mark Blicavs also returning, who missed the Cats’ Round 11 win over Collingwood with concussion and a calf injury respectively, the Cats are nearing full strength for the first time this year.
Last year’s runners-up haven’t set the world on fire in 2021, but they still sit comfortably in third with an 8-3 record. Victory tonight would see them leap a game and percentage clear of the fourth-placed Brisbane, while remaining apace with ladder-leaders Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs.
The Power are also 8-3, but like the Cats, have had questions raised over their status as competition heavyweights. Of their three losses, they’ve been thumped by the Lions and West Coast on the road, as well as a far more concerning defeat to the Bulldogs at their Adelaide Oval fortress.
Ken Hinkley will lose goalsneak Orazio Fantasia for this match after suffering a knee injury that will keep him out for the next month. His absence places more pressure on champion veteran Robbie Gray to keep delivering the goods near the big sticks.
The Cats are infamous for their poor record coming off a week’s break under Brad Scott – they are 2-12 playing off a bye since 2012. Heading into this match having had to hard quarantine for the better part of a week, they have a challenge ahead of them to flip the script.

Yep, won the final because Tom Hawkins forgot to put his kicking boots on. If you can show me why I should be optimistic about Port winning a flag this year, I'll gladly change my mind, but the facts are we're 1-4 against Top 8 sides and don't even look close to beating any of them at the moment. That's not the recipe for a flag.

I suppose you would have said the same comment last year when the cats beat us by 50 points ,think we won the final against them if my memory is correct. But keep on being my negative Joel

FMD – No action taken against Henderson because he was contesting the ball despite being penalised for blocking (ie not contesting the ball) and being 3 ft behind the man who took the mark while Plowman was 0.08 of a second behind the ball getting to O’meara and didn’t have a free kick paid against but cops 2 weeks. WTF? FWIW I don’t think either should be suspended but how about some consistency for at least 2 weeks!!

Dam what a hangover, when will I learn.lol. Well played Geelong, beaten by the better team in the night, I'd still rather lose to top 8 sides then bottom 8 sides. I think my best/worst effort of last night was a MY MOTHER PUSHED HARDER THAN THAT, at the top of my voice as I was losing it at one stage, at least it gave those Port Supporters around me something to smile about.lol.

I've wanted Hinkley out since the end of 2015, so you're not going to convince me he's all of a sudden a good coach. He's wasted the prime years of Travis Boak and Robbie Gray (not to mention the Hoff and Brad Ebert) by building a culture of underachieving and going missing against good sides.

Well I think there’s a discussion to be had about having fewer disposals but also way fewer tackles. But yes, Geelong won it through their own play more than Port lost it. I was impressed and I think the wider footy world should have been impressed too.

They beat Richmond. We will be top 4:

Probably a little more class and poise across the ground, which Dursma and Butters will help to bring to a degree, -as well as a better maintained level of concentration. The lapses in focus prove extremely costly against the good teams, and I saw several last night which were thoroughly punished by the cats, resulting in massive momentum shifts. Their midfield is Elite but up top they're still a little Charlie centric, and down back, well, there are clearly some issues which need to be resolved going into finals. They're not far off, just a few little tweaks and they'll be back in the hunt, I wouldn't discount them just yet, but top 4 might be a bridge too far this season. They'll likely have to do it the hard/near-impossible way...

Serious question. What does it take for Port to win against a top four side?

Just looked at your run home. The only challenging game is the last one. Win last night was absolutely crucial for us.
