Dangerfield gets away with a BLATANT throw in goal assist

By The Roar / Editor

The Gabba crowd was furious when they saw the replay of Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield throwing the ball to Gary Ablett who kicked a goal.

It came at a crucial moment in the third term of the preliminary final.

While commentators were shocked, Bruce McAvaney said he preferred that the game didn’t review moments like this.

What are your thoughts Roarers? Should blatant howlers in goal scoring opportunities be reviewed?

Can you do it in reply mode Spruce. It kind looks like you don't want to engage while you are engaging. Also I would like to know how you know what everyone is thinking. It must be very comforting. I am joking.... of course you don't and it's a line of thinking I would drop if I were you. I write what is happening and i have heard it alluded to in the media even by Wayne Campbell. It used to be called "Rule of the Week". It even had a name. It's okay to joke about but it's too terrible to consider seriously. Everyone's on the continuum and no one probes deep as the flotsam floats by. Footy is just a pass time. Maybe that's the no one you dream of.

You keep pedaling this. Until you can put some fact and evidence behind it, no one cares.

then you aren't looking hard enough at Danger, Yat. He throws the ball from time to time. That's why everyone bar you is commenting on it, and have commented on it throughout the year. Richmond fans can accept Martin throws, it's time for you to man up and accept Danger does too.

What's quite incredible is that Dusty is building a catalogue of throws, and Danger is nipping at the heels and yet the umpires are not giving any closer scrutiny to their technique.

Yes l get that too. On the Serengeti there is a strange yet beautiful arrangement for all to survive. Vast numbers are kept in check. Predators and prey in a struggle that is all yet too magical for the human eye to comprehend or the heart to imagine. Yes unnature can be a thing of overwrought beauty and can manifest as the happenstance of salubrious synchronicity of awkwardness. The herd marches by all to aware of the juxtaposition.

Exactly. Only with multiple slow motion replays and angles is it obvious. This stuff happens all the time and I put it in a different, much less annoying category to umpires actively intervening by blowing the whistle for 50/50 free kicks. I have no problem with umpires letting the play go unless it's a blatant free kick. Let the 50/50 stuff go and the players will adapt and the game will be better for it.

The ‘Karma Bus’ will have the final say on this…..it always does. For example Dursma & Hartlett both took pot shots at Lynch during the game and look what happened to them. The feral Port Crowd hounded Big Tom and who left the ground upset?

Gamesmanship is part of the game. Getting an advantage by tricking the umpire is happening all the time. It’s easy to ignore as it’s pretty rife if you study the play. Not all games but it’s common enough. Exaggeration to get a free is even within the rules if it’s not excessive. Does it make it harder for the umpire? Well one of the umpires was very vocal saying just this during Friday nights game. ‘You make it hard for us when you exaggerate’ was what I heard on my telly. This goes to Dwayne Russel on SEN and his ‘great decision maker’ comments during the past weeks. If the umpires were serious about decision making and who is a good decision maker they would have made sure the grey areas were clarified centuries ago. We get constant shifting interpretations and that’s how the umpires like it and it’s how they present it. Every umpire has their own view of a particular rule. The umpires are the law and can make more than one call on the same play. I prefer them to make less calls for this reason and to let the game flow.’ Just pay the clanger errors and any flaunting of the rules. If it’s just a little mistake let it go. Leigh Mathews believes the reason the First Prelim flowed so well was the high number of calls. I’m not so sure that was the reason as rolling mauls have not been an issue ever since Clarko put a firecracker up the umps in the prior opportunity thingo. Razor Ray is a character and a top communicator with articulate insights into the umpires role. However to say he is a top decision maker is really neither here nor there when the rules are so open to interpretation. No names but various commentators this year have alluded to the connection between umpiring controversy and the role it plays in sensational talk back popularity ratings. It’s something to talk about so whatever we do don’t clarify the rules as we’d have nothing to talk about. Talk of an external review of the AFL is a scary thought if this sort of thing was an actual business practice as it kinda looks like.

Fair enough, Cat. Those two have been pilloried throughout the year, particularly by people here, as if they're the only two players that add a bit of mayo to highlight free kicks. That's all. Good luck on Saturday. Carna Tigers.
