After an intriguing three days, the Fourth Ashes Test from the SCG, Sydney is set for a decisive day four. Australia continue to be in the driving seat, but England could spoil the whitewash party by continuing their brave fight back and taking the Test to a draw. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage of the fourth day’s play from 10:00am (AEDT).
Day three was a real rollercoaster with it looking at some points as though Australia might be able to win the whole Test within the day, and then England making their bowling attack look surprisingly average at times and counter punching. England could rightly feel they took the honours at points during the day, but the overall honours still belong to Australia. They are over 150 runs ahead and have taken seven wickets already with England’s tail exposed.
With plenty of rain forecast for the next couple of days, England might be tempted to go slow at every opportunity and try to achieve a draw. If they can somehow keep batting and get the Australian lead down to sub 50 then the draw is very achievable but if Australia strike quickly today and start their second innings with a 130 run lead then they could well steal this Test and keep the whitewash on the cards.
Despite the bravery of players such as Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow, England will again be frustrated that even with a good helping of luck on their side today, their top order collapsed and the team was always under incredible pressure. To save this game the top four really have to play better and some basic technique issues need to be solved quickly.
For Australia they will need to be very efficient – there may well be little playing time left in this Test so it’s time for ruthlessness.

Because it decreased his team's chances of winning, and increased his team's chances of losing by a whopping 0%.

The more attacking mindset when the declaration is imminent has now seen his two highest scores. So I think his major issue is he’s just getting too anxious and defensive when he’s batting. As Bernie said the other day, he should just try to push a single/two within his first few balls, and just try to be a little bit more aggressive, rather than just try block his first dozen balls and scoring no runs.

Yeah, if you'd told me before the series that Scott Boland would clinch the Ashes with 6-7 at the MCG, I'd probably have suggested you go and have a lie down.

Yes it’s been an interesting series so far , injuries , covid , Hobart getting an ashes test , uzzie scoring a century in each innings and might not play again , so I tie would not surprise me at all AMD
Redcap
Roar Guru
Yep. 0.08% of completed test matches (2 of 2445) have been ties. As Douglas Adams might say, a virtual impossibility and therefore a finite probability.

Cheers Rob - yeah agree, just said the same thing. I reckon they would have preferred an extra 5 to 10 overs to have a go at the openers.

It will cost them big time Don, if England finish 8 wickets down this time tomorrow. And even if they don't it was still pointless batting on and potentially jeopardising things.

STUMPS ON DAY FOUR!! Australia have put themselves in a good position to win this Test on the final day. England have a huge target ahead of them that is surely beyond them so the question is can Australia get the 10 wickets in time? With no wickets dropping in that final 11 overs, you do wonder if Australia needed quite so many runs on the board. They might now be wishing they'd given themselves another 5 or 10 overs tonight to skittle a couple of England players. Australia in the driving seat for sure and the day belongs to Usman Khawaja after another wonderful century! He played so well and looked in control all the way through. Thank you for all your banter today and look forward to seeing you tomorrow morning for an exciting final day! It should be a good one!! England: 0/30 Need 358 runs to win Hameed: 8 Crawley: 22 Overs: 11.0
