The Cricket World Cup continues this afternoon when Australia take on New Zealand in Dharamsala. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4pm (AEDT).

The cooler Dharamsala climate may give both these teams some respite from the Indian heat, but there is plenty on the line in this trans-Tasman battle. A win for New Zealand goes a long way towards sealing a semi- final spot for the Black Caps, while Australia’s grip on a knockout berth also becomes a lot tighter with a victory.

After losses to India and South Africa to start the World Cup, Australia has bounced back with three straight wins. Their latest, a 309-run win over the Netherlands, broke numerous records and made the rest of the competition sit up and take notice.

David Warner is in great touch with back-to-back centuries, whilst Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell have been brutal in recent knocks. Maxwell’s 106 off only 44 balls against the Dutch came at just the right time for his confidence.

Travis Head is due to return against New Zealand, which will force a shake up in the batting order, with Marnus Labuschagne the likely unlucky one to miss out.

On the bowling front, there is still room for improvement, and the Australian quicks need wickets in the PowerPlay overs. If they can do that, Adam Zampa has shown he can take a bag of wickets, leading the tournament with 13.

Prediction

This is an important clash between two of the heavyweights of the competition. A loss for either doesn’t necessarily mean disaster, although it would place Australia on the precipice.

Australia has won its last four ODIs against New Zealand, albeit at home; they do have a bit of a hold over their Trans-Tasman rivals.

Australia will go into this one with plenty of confidence and I expect them to get the job done.

Australia by 40 runs or 4 wickets.

Not just Starc. Our bowlers bowled 22 wides. That effectively gave NZ nearly 54 overs. Shades of 2005 when we lost the Ashes due to no balls.

Our bowling coach has some hard work in front of him. Close result, 5 runs but 22 wides, that is nearly another four overs the Kiwis got.

Only 9 ODIs is the issue. Until this tour he was averaging 50 with the bat and his bowling included a 5 for. Captaincy and selection is solely responsible for not building on that. What an atrocious use of our best resource. Your statistics do not identify in-game marginalisation. Stats never do. If, in almost a quarter of those innings, he is burned by his partner (Inglis and Maxwell), where is that in the stats?

I’m not a knocker of Green, I’m a fan. But just calling what has happened. He’s played 9 ODIs in 2022, average of 15 with strike rate of 67.

He's hitting the middle straight away. Mind you, if he had a game or two, you knockers of Green might actually notice that playing some games will remove cobwebs. There's 9 games. Why leave him out of them all? He is Australia's best cricketer, placed in retirement until Cummins goes.

Adam Zampa, no. 7 in ODI rankings, takes 3/74. Glenn Phillips who doesn’t rank in the top 100 in rankings takes 3/37. What’s wrong with this picture? (hint- Zampa’s not the problem.). Should have scored 400+, NZ would probably have collapsed under the weight of runs and got 300 or less and we would be close to overtaking NZ on NRR.

The middle overs batting was atrocious and it almost proved the difference between winning and losing…Australia are lucky Zampa has found form just at the right time.

Valid point. That last over was shocking. We posted 388; in a real world the opposition should have never been in it. Either 30 runs short, or too stacked on for geriatric bowlers. Great game of cricket, but seriously at 0 for 50 after four overs, this should have been over 2 hours ago.

You can see from the way he bats he’s out of form. One or two boundaries doesn’t negate the overall way he’s batting. But I’m sure he’ll bounce back.

Australia needs to have some serious chat with Mitchell Starc. When he leaks runs, it's like raining cats & dogs. Wide ball 5 in last over defending 20? Come on. He is looking toothless both at opening spell as well as even more problem at death.

Incredible game. New Zealand can seriously hold their heads up high, amazing game. Hope NZ can at least celebrate the rugby later on.

Okay, call me Scrooge, but to lose after being 1/175 after 19 overs would have been our worse ever defence of a total in ODIs, seeing we had no Mick Lewis in the team. To allow them to get so close was pretty disgraceful.

I think is the first time ever that Starc hasn’t taken a wicket in a World Cup match

What a game. Australia have hung on to cement their spot in the top 4 but New Zealand lose no friends here.
