Galle International Stadium plays host to the second and final Test between Sri Lanka and Australia. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 2.30pm AEST.

Sri Lanka will be looking for some inspiration after some abysmal shots by their batters in the second innings almost saw the hosts lose by an innings. Angelo Mathews is set to come out of isolation before the second Test begins – however, will he be match-fit?

The Sri Lankan dressing room will be hoping so. In a massive blow for the Sri Lankans, spinner Praveen Jayawickrama was set to replace Lasith Embuldeniya before the spinner tested positive to COVID-19.

Dhananjaya de Silva, Jeffrey Vandersay and Asitha Fernando have been ruled out for certain, while Embuldeniya has been confirmed, meaning big changes to the team are guaranteed.

The Sri Lankans are barely going through in their spin stocks now as youngsters Maheesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage have been called up to the Test squad. One of these two is set to debut, and the pressure is on the youngsters to deliver with the ball while one of Dimuth Karunaratne or Kusal Mendis in their top four has to get a big score with the willow.

Debutants Kamindu Mendis, Theekshana and spinner Prabath Jayasuriya have been named to replace the COVID-hit trio.

Australia will want to continue following the template that England had on their last tour of Sri Lanka in 2021 – attacking the spinners and putting them under pressure from ball one. On a pitch spitting venom almost every ball, Usman Khawaja, Cam Green and Alex Carey showed great application.

Khawaja’s success as a Test opener in the subcontinent is proving that he should have been David Warner’s opening partner come Chris Rogers’ retirement, but better late than never.

The Aussies will go into the second Test unchanged, despite deeply considering a Test recall for Glenn Maxwell to add spin bowling and batting depth at the expense of Mitchell Starc.

Prediction

There is a sense of elite professionalism within the Australian Test setup ever since Pat Cummins has been named as skipper. Something that hasn’t been seen in Australian cricket since the Ricky Ponting days. He doesn’t get into any war of words with anyone, keeps a calm head while motivating his men to play a hard but fair style of cricket. And it’s brought success in the subcontinent so far, as Cummins has not lost a series in a part of the world Australia has historically struggled in.

Sri Lanka will be itching to get one back, but Australia will not make things any easier for the hosts. Australia to win in a tight contest.

The duke balls have not been swinging as they did in the past making it much easier to chase down fourth innings targets.

I'd pick Maxwell over Head on sub-continent too. His career will disappoint largely through not being picked enough. They'd love him in England right now

I'm clear about you. And I'm very interested in cricket, all cricket, played by all nations. I'm not sure your view of cricket extends beyond India. Every time somebody has something positive to say about any team other than India, you shoot it down with some ridiculous whataboutism suggesting they wouldn't stack up against your glory boys. It's tiresome and it's childish. It's OK for people to take some pleasure in things their team is doing without you constantly shooting it down. I suggest again, time for you to grow up

Well that is quite mysterious to me. Glenn Maxwell averaged close to forty last time here, with a century. Since then he has become very handy part time spinner too. Yet he finds himself out of the team.

My mouth gaped open when I saw the overhead shots. Just looks precarious, but apparently it mustn't be.

I know it's unfounded, but I keep thinking that ground is going to be swallowed by rising sea levels, or at least regularly flooded, whenever they show it's precarious location.

It's adjacent to The Fort, which way back was a small settlement built around the military post. Beyond that was undeveloped land suitable for a cricket ground. The Fort was strategically built to give maximum exposure to sea defence, given the site jutted out on a headland. Years on, the city has expanded exponentially, but the cricket ground has been preserved as a recreation precinct, now adjacent to a historic precinct. Yes. A great location.

Watto reviews went beyond disappointing and started to become comical relief towards the end.

Sarcasm is fine as long as it has meaning. I do not remember Travis Head being man of the series in any series here in sub continent. In Pakistan, if i remember correctly, he averages tick over twenty, that includes a not out. In Sri Lanka , in both innings he looked like a fish out of water against Spin. It does not take an expert to see his trouble against spin. He had an excellent home run in Ashes. But the condition is far different here. People may disagree, but i believe to certain player, horses for courses policy is more suitable. Of course Travis Head can improve his game. Usman Khawaja looks a completely different batter now compared to the one we saw in Sri Lanka last time.

I believe i have tolerated your stupid nonsense comments for bit longer than i should have. Do not cross line. It does not seem to me you are interested in cricket. If you are looking for trouble ,then you will find it more troublesome to digest what we can do in that regard. Do i make myself clear?

Dry bowling on fifth stump at speed. Reverse if you can get it. Bouncy spin rushed through the over.

There's no one else. Usman's just such a constant disappointment. Like Watto reviewing and LBW.

Most geographically bizarre test ground in the world I think. Couldn't believe the overhead shots that show it on such a tiny narrow peninsula!
