The Ashes cricket end of day scores: England vs Australia 5th Test, Day 3

By Suneer Chowdhary / Roar Guru

Jofra Archer’s six-fer denied Steve Smith the chance to run away with the match yet as England took command of the fifth and final Test match at The Oval on day two. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 3, starting from 8pm AEST.

It’s tough to imagine which side would be ruing things more; Tim Paine’s Australia on opting to field first after winning the toss or Joe Root’s England for not bringing in Sam Curran earlier into the equation.

Because as things stand at the end of the second day, England have been handed the advantage, thanks to the combination of a shock Paine call at the toss and Curran’s three-wicket haul including two wickets off successive deliveries that broke the Aussie lower-middle order back.

When the day finished, England were leading by 78 runs with all their wickets intact and with three full days of play remaining – the weather, for now, looks great – this looks like it’s headed in the general direction of the hosts.

Unless someone from the touring party can replicate what Archer did for England.

Because Curran might have grabbed those three for his side but it was Archer who kept doing what he had done all series. And this time around, he was rewarded for it more handsomely than most other innings bar Headingley.

While there were some social media murmurings about how Root might have over-bowled Archer right throughout the series, the absence of Ben Stokes’ bowling, and Chris Woakes’ swing made it difficult for the captain to take the ball off his hands.

Archer bowled nearly 24 overs, seven more than the next-most by an English bowler and he never stopped picking up the Aussie wickets.

When it came to the Australian batting, the narrative wasn’t too different. Steven Smith scored a lot of runs, he was supported by Marnus Labuschange but there wasn’t too much else to gloat about.

The openers fell early again, although there were a few doubts about David Warner’s early dismissal this time and once Archer had broken the third wicket stand between Smith and Labuschagne, there was no partnership that exceeded 42.

So when the play resumes on day three, Australia have a mountain to climb on a pitch that hasn’t looked as dodgy as the scores have suggested so far.

But a dry Oval pitch could get trickier to bat as the match progresses, which is why if Paine would like to not live to regret his call to field first, his bowlers have to stand up from the get go.

If Siddle plays another test match for Australia be sure to let me know, until then this was his farewell test. Warner was clearly also a sentimental pick, because he clearly wasn't picked on form.

Thanks for you summery. Are there 2 days left? If so, and Auz can cut the lead to under 450, it could be Warner’s and the top order’s chance to get some runs. and give Smith a chance to be the legend he has been and win it!!!!!!!! Dreaming, I know, but you gotta dream big some times!

End of a grinding day, solid day of Test cricket and one that sees England gallop ahead with a lead that's edging towards the 400-run mark. It was built on the back of a near-century from Joe Denly, and innings of substance from Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler. Australia tried hard but the possibly injured Lyon finger didn't help (although he did pick up three wickets, he didn't bowl a lot) and Peter Siddle's inability to keep the runs down was a problem too. The visitors could well be chasing a 400-plus score, and only four teams have managed to win Tests doing that. England look well on course to a series-leveller but then again there's that man at the number four who holds the Aussie key. That's it from me, have a good evening.

Archer gets a single off the first ball of the Cummins over. Cummins peppers Leach with a few bouncers, including one that hits his glove, fending off and there's another that's flicked just past the short-leg fielder for a single - not unlike the one from Headingley. Archer sees off the last ball to end the day.

With three minutes to go, Pat Cummins will bowl what could be the last over of the day. I would have probably had Nathan Lyon bowl this one and with a minute to go, brought Cummins on from the other end to get 12 balls at the tail right now.

Couple of overs to go for the day's play I suppose. And Marnus Labuschagne will take up the attack.

Archer has managed to get off the mark with a jab to the leg-side and Leach, who has been a thorn in Australia's flesh all series, opens his account with a lovely on-drive through mid-on. Three more to the total. A bouncer follows and Archer manages to keep it down, before turning one to backward square-leg for one. Leach gets himself a single to third-man off the final ball. 8/311 in 89

what a shame paine didn’t bat first and rest his bowlers after 200 overs at manchester a few days before let alone the decision to bat first being standard issue at the oval. extraordinary bad decision, the bowlers tired a little bit for me with the old ball but really england have been contained in this match batting first and the bowlers have been outstanding this series . Whats worse is the effort from the same old culprits in our batting. Good to see siddle pick up a few terrible luck this series

12 minutes to go for the day to end and two wickets stand. By my estimation, in about a minute or so, if both these wickets don't fall, Australia won't be batting tonight.

15 minutes left. Were never going to declare with 2 days left after this. Would want to get a lead of more than 450.

Right, so all of a sudden both batsmen are gone and England are eight down. The lead's inching towards 400 though.
