By The Roar / Editor

It’s the 21-year old all-rounder’s fourth Sheffield Shield century, in just 17 matches.

Glad you are prepared to wait. Steve Waugh first played at 20 and wasn't any good for 6-7 years. Paid back the faith in spades. Not putting Head in that category, but too early to say he was a poor choice.

see above. you're welcome to him. Its not a matter how old he is its a matter of how reliable he isn't But ,like I said to the other angry bloke I'm happy to eat my words

Head's best isn't behind him, he's 26 for god sake! He hasn't even reached the recognised prime of his career!

That was last year. As Smith showed, one off season can make a difference, especially when the game is 90% mental. Form needs to be rewarded.

Gotta have Wade’s spot for the start of the summer. If he can get a few more revs on his dobbers too, he’ll be the dozen or so overs the Aussies will need in a Test for a breather. Having said that, you don’t fluke a Shield 5fa and he has a couple under his belt already. Not sure the half trackers were advisable to a confident puller, but he has an array of actual cricket shots and that’s what our middle order needs.

Yeah, he's the one you can rely on in a dire situation...or not The Indians will not fail to have two gullies in place But glad to eat my words Tom but he's one who gets squared up and falls into the off side trap.

Head’s best is behind him? He’s 26, not 32 ffs, That’s one of the most ridiculous things I have read on here. Head has absolutely earned a longer rope in the test side.

why do we need Wade and to a point Head when their best is behind them or getting there in Head's case. Head is like Marsh. A line on or around off stump makes him very nervous and prone to flash. Get the youth in now. You would want him and Manus to be the core of the middle order for a while. Green and the next young run scorer. The ones that want to train and practise. They are the ones that will succeed

If its runs on the board age should not be a barrier. Why do we have to wait till they are over 30 before Australia picks them. Its about youth getting experience. He's a big scorer when he is on. Just what you want at 5 or 6. Another Michael Clarke prodigy

Wade needs big runs in the India series to really cement himself, so does Head, i really remain unconvinced about Head's ability to make worthwhile hundreds against high quality attacks. 13 FC hundreds in 193 innings doesnt scream 'dependable'. India will work him over, he has a propensity to just throw away an innings when set: see my above comment about him being the "king of flashy 50/60s" and cheap last day and/or 4th innings hundreds, which hes made quite a few of recently in the Shield. And Head is nearing 27, he's not a 'youngster' anymore. I completely agree with you about Green being able to be picked on his batting alone, but also want him to prove it with another 2-3 big scores and some half centuries to really stand up above the rest. Too many times the selectors pick someone off a run of 3-4 matches of good scores, i want 10 matches of big scores to make an insurmountable case for selection. Then show the faith and give him a dozen test matches to settle in. But you're probably right, he'll most likely find himself in the team this summer if Wade/Head start struggling. Dont forget about Nic Maddinson, he's been in scary form recently

He's an exciting talent, and I also understand the calls for caution and giving him time. But even without his bowling, based on his batting from the start of last season to now, he's got to just about have pushed himself to the top of the list for "next in" to the test top 6. The question of when may depend on Head and Wade. If they are both able to do well enough to keep their spots then that may give him more time. If either of them starts really struggling, then he might be in sooner. If he's able to be back bowling consistently soon, then that question may come up sooner, regardless of Head/Wade's performance, if they come across a game where they decide they really want that fifth bowler. But he'd have to have been consistently bowling 10+ overs per days play, bowling well, without any injury worries to be considered for that role.

Plus, nobody succeeds in every game. And he's still really young and learning all the time. By all reports he works incredibly hard in training and is continually improving. Can't so much more than average 52 with the bat and 21 with the ball in first class cricket as a 21 year old. Facing one of the top test attacks in the world in a first class game is a tough assignment, and he'll be better for it, and likely will do better next time.

Hard not to get excited about a 21 year old who can average 52 with the bat and 21 with the ball at first class level. That's a pretty impressive start to his first class career there. But I think everyone knows that while he's a special talent he has to be managed carefully, not rush him in too soon. It's a good start to the season though. Players often have "a" good season when young. The big question is whether they can back it up. Good signs for him so far. Hopefully he can continue it. He's this sort of talent that makes him that sort of person where you cheer on the opposition. Even being from NSW, I still wanted to see him do well in that match against NSW, and getting a big hundred was awesome. Hopefully that continue and he can get his bowling going again too. Will be interesting to see if bowling will negatively affect his batting at all.

Indeedy. Wade goes, Green in at #6 and Head moves to the more FAC slot of #5 is the obvious set-up, but I wonder if CG is a #6. Atm he only appears to have one (slowish) gear whereas classic #6s have a couple. It'll be interesting to watch.

Then again, there are nations that would kill to have the NSW attack. I suspect there are not too many players on earth who could consistently do well against it. The big 3 + Lyon. That's awesome.

Yeah. A bit harsh on Head.

2020-10-22T10:39:55+00:00

The Travis Head who pads his FC stats with meaningless hundreds on the 4th day of matches all the time. Travis Head is worse than mediocre against quality attacks, ie England and India. Watch him get mauled this summer by Shami/Bumrah and Ashwin. And his 13 hundreds from 193 innings dont exactly scream big game player. He's the king of flashy 50s/60s. Get ready for a 50 test career littered with some good innings and basically nothing in between. New Shaun Marsh, calling it now

Right. Wade is the one to make way if Green is picked. Head is doing a fine job at no. 6
