The Brisbane Broncos begin their quest for redemption when they take on the Parramatta Eels in Suncorp Stadium’s first Friday night match of the season. Stay up to date with their NRL clash with live scores on The Roar from 8:05pm (AEDT).

Nobody could have foreseen just how bad 2020 would go for the Brisbane Broncos – especially after they notched two wins from their two matches before the season was suspended. Their remaining 18 matches netted them just one win as they copped belting after belting and crashed to their first ever wooden spoon in ignominious fashion. Now, with Kevin Walters at the helm, the long journey to respectability begins.

Parramatta may have qualified for the finals last year, but their shaky finish to the home-and-away season and straight-sets exit means they’ve still got a big point to prove in 2021. Their line-up from last year is virtually the same, but it’ll be a big year for the halves pairing of Mitchell Moses and Dylan Brown as they aim to prove their names deserve mention amongst the competition’s best.

The Eels were way too good in both meetings last season, cruising to 34-6 and 26-12 victories. Parramatta have a strong recent record overall against Brisbane, winning the last three matches in a row and six of the last eight.

He's not an 80 player. Evidenced many times last season. With the speed of the game, no middle should be playing 80.

I was very disappointed with Pat Carrigan. He jogs as players run past him for a break too many times and doesn't come across enough, he is not putting in that extra effort in defence.

At least it looks like the narrative's changed for a bit

There was a bit to like about the performance and still a fair bit to go. Kevvie will have to look at his rotation as I don't think Fleg and Asiata are the guys to face a fresh and powerful pack. Fleg doesn't have the discipline, giving up 6-agains are the worst time. Obviously injury crueled them and Coates was huge, it stuffed both left and right side attack. Had they got that Turpin try call correct (Knock on? Any downward pressure is a try) I reckon they could have held on. The trouble is, this was a big emotional game at home. You're right, if they are not at least this standard the better teams are going to burn them.

Give the Bunnies one sub-par performance against the defending premiers in round 1 Rellum. Souths will turn a corner next week. They already turned a corner in their first game of the year scoring 18 points to 4 and keeping the defending premiers tryless in the last 50 mins.

That's why I'm not worried about an 8 point loss to the defending premiers in round 1 where Souths scored the last 3 back-to-back tries and bombed a 4th. That's very encouraging for Rabbitohs fans and will give Manly fans a few sleepless nights ahead of round 2. The premiers couldn't score a try in the last 50 mins! Still, I'll be much happier if the Bunnies can grab a top 2 finish and avoid having to face the Storm in Melbourne again this year matt.

I see a few giving us a pat on the back for trying hard. That is not enough at this level. When it gets tough the real winners stand up and the Broncs just don't seem to have enough players mentally tough enough to push the the pain. We defending well till the first try then it was basically back to last year giving up nearly a point a minute but there was at least more intent in defence for the whole game. But in attack we just couldn't put in the effort or take the hard plays when it was needed, I think we got over the halfway line twice after the Eels scored their first try. Constant drops and 6 agains killed us just like last year. Really poor short kicks. The 9 team were giving Milf raps galore but he barely ran the ball apart from that good break in the second half. We looked clunky at times as well in attack even in the first half. There were some good performances. Turpin was epic in defence in the second half and TPJ's first stint was fantastic and very reminiscent of Broncs front row play form 2015, lots of offloads. Riki is a suspension waiting to happen. He was on angry pills. It is an improved performance over last year but that is a super low bar to come back from. Kevie has a lot of work to do to get this players to play through 20 plus games at the intensity needed.

Great to ser the Broncos finally showed some resilience. Last season the flood gates would've opened and the Eels would've piled on the points in the final 20. Turpin, Isaako, Niu, Flegler, and hell even Milford looked the goods. Maybe we didn't get the chocolates today but so much there to build on, after two years of Seibold I feel like I finally have my team back

Bennetts Broncs teams regularly were nearly undefeated by Origin time.

Thanks Retro. If the boys put in an effort like that each week, we can at least hold our heads high. PS Bennett’s teams traditionally start a bit slow and work their way into the season. By August the Bunnies will be humming.

Good start by the Broncs. Hopefully it's the beginning of a slow burn. Injuries are a cause for concern. I suspect/ hope Asaita and Coates won't be gone for too long. Lodge is another matter. He's legs are struggling. Though the spine remained injury free and will be better for the run. Turpin was superb. Tactically, they're also sound, leaving room in the cap, and keeping some quality players on the back burners, plus Haas will return shortly. Sometimes the early losses fortify you. In 2015 in the first round the Rabbitohs gave the Broncs a whipping. Who knows ? :stoked:

I reckon the Broncos win that if they had a full side. Looks like the Eels have done nothing but swap a few guys to other sides of the field. Their attack is going to struggle against the top teams.

I already said I thought they would award a try. I think the actual contact on the ball was inconclusive from that angle. You never answered my question elvis; "explain to me WHY the Broncos got a slow motion reverse angle replay, in fact THREE of them and Souths didn’t even get ONE for the second Papenhuyzen try?"

It looked like a try in fast motion, isn't that what you want? One thing I wouldn't mind seeing a replay of is a run of Sivo in the second half where it looked like he lead with a flying knee.

I don’t agree with your point about the bunker. They reviewed one try. Last year they were reviewing something nearly every set. Much better arrangement this year.

Serious commiserations to all the Broncos fans on here; I'm sorry but I don't know you all by name, but you should be very proud of your team, considering what they were offering last year. That was one hell of a game by the new look Broncs, and there were some seriously positive signs compared to last year. Kevin Walters is leaps and bounds ahead of Seibold and even though you didn't get the win tonight, I think you'll be notching up victories sooner rather than later. That first half was incredible, and the three injuries were so unlucky (although Coates really only has himself to blame). As for the Eels, I'm stoked to be starting the season with a win, but gee whiz there is a lot of work that needs doing. That first half performance was abysmal and though most players made amends in the second, there's danger signs once again in defence and a lot of problems that torpedoed us last season seem to still be there. Nice to see the second half recovery though. Another note, a lot was made about the change to the Bunker; how it would review tries after the referee had blown the whistle so that the game wouldn't be held up, but that's completely pointless if they can just stop the game anyway like they did when Gutherson scored. There's very little point in making the change to the rules if it can theoretically be completely discarded every time.

But THIS one was honourable mate. Significant improvement but still a problem over 80 mins. But when a team is down 3 players that is understandable and excusable.
