Round 5 of the NRL premiership continues tonight when the Canberra Raiders take on the Penrith Panthers at GIO Stadium in Canberra. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 6pm (AEDT).
Canberra are in the unenviable position of playing a Panthers side coming off a loss. Losses are a rarity for Penrith, back to back losses are pretty much unheard of. However, with only the solitary win so far, the Raiders need to find another gear shortly.
The Raiders were poor last round with a 24-14 loss to the Knights. Jack Wighton spent time in the sin bin but the damage was largely done beforehand. The Knights appeared more desperate and their back five were superb in keeping the Raiders backpedaling in defence.
Jamal Fogarty was sorely missed against Newcastle and Canberra’s attack looked pedestrian at times. They can look disorganised in the opposition’s 20m, with some of the options taken being difficult to explain.
Jordan Rapana makes his return from his ban with James Schiller missing out. Fogarty returns but will be missing Wighton through suspension. Matt Frawley gets another run in the halves.
With the golden point loss to the Eels last round, the Panthers sit midfield after a start perhaps below their expectations. The Eels were able to hang in against Penrith and take their chances when opportunities arose.
The Panthers are weaker without Api Koroisau and Viliame Kikau. We are likely to find out how much weaker over the next few weeks. However you look at it though, the Panthers still have plenty of firepower right across the park.
In team changes, Luke Garner gets a rest with Scott Sorensen starting in the second row and Lindsay Smith joining the bench. Soni Luke is out with concussion with Tyrone Peachey getting his chance. Liam Martin remains sidelined.
Prediction
There is no doubt the Raiders are a better team at home and Ricky Stuart will be preparing his team for an ambush.
I expect Canberra to go with the Panthers for the first 30 minutes.
However, Penrith can be relentless and, without Wighton, Canberra won’t be able to hold on much longer.

The better team went up two gears and the weaker team went belly up and wet themselves.

That was a very tough watch. I actually thought the Raiders weren't that bad in the first half trailing 13-6 at the break. But they fell apart in that second half. The Raiders had plenty of ball in the first half but little in terms of attack. They actually had the Panthers under pressure making mistakes. But in the second half they were just ball watching as the Panthers did as they pleased . They are sitting exactly where they deserve to be - second to bottom. From that performance I think Ricky may have lost the dressing room - including Jack Wighton. Time for a change.

The Panthers pushed it too far for the ref to cover up. The stats speak for themselves. Any more questions?

Yeah so crazy there was that lopsided penalty count yet only the panthers had a player binned for too many penalties. How does that fit into your conspiracy theory equation?

Wonderful to see Jaeman give it to that horrible Ricky Stuart. Paul Kent will probably say it’s inappropriate this week.

Is this the first utter capitulation of the season? Same answer.

59% possession to the Panthers courtesy of a 10 - 5 penalty and sixagain count in their favour. Mind you, 15 errors and 53 missed tackles didn't help the Raiders cause. Commiserations Geoff. It will be hard for the Raiders to come back from this mentally. Congrats Albo and all Panthers fans other than The Ugg Boot Queen, Jenny.

Is there a try celebration for a gutted dog?? I wanted Gutho to make a big ‘X’ with his arms after he scored last night.

That last try will hurt Ricky even more, Jaeman Salmon the tryscorer.
