Round 25 nears its conclusion this afternoon when the Gold Coast Titans take on the New Zealand Warriors at Cbus Super Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 2pm (AEST).

The final spot in the eight is about to be decided, and Sharks fans will be watching on nervously. The equation is simple for the Titans… win by 11 or more, and they are in. Anything less and the Sharks hang on.

For the Warriors, it’s been another difficult season for them, once again spending the season away from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They will finish two points outside the eight with a win… and the lifelong admiration of everyone associated with Cronulla.

After leading Newcastle 12-6 at the break last weekend, the Titans let a golden chance slip, with Mitchell Pearce kicking the winning field goal. They are coming off three straight losses, but have one more chance to get it right.

David Fifita showed glimpses of what he can do against the Knights, but he will need to do more again this afternoon. The Titans do have an imposing forward pack, led by Moeaki Fotuaika and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui – can they get the job done here?

The Titans go in largely unchanged. Kevin Proctor has been named to play but will need to pass a fitness test on his AC joint. Fotuaika has been named to start, with Fa’asuamaleaui moving to lock and Sam McIntyre reverting to the bench.

The Warriors’ finals hopes were finally crushed with back-to-back losses against the Broncos and Raiders. They will be hoping that the worst of the pandemic passes and they can get back to Mt Smart Stadium next year.

The worst part of the loss to the Raiders was that they led 16-0, only to be overrun by Jordan Rapana in the second half. Once the Raiders got the momentum, the Warriors couldn’t find any answers.

Chanel Harris-Tavita returns from a foot injury and is likely to play. Jamayne Taunoa-Brown comes in off the interchange in place of the injured Bunty Afoa, whilst Matt Lodge retains his spot after successfully fighting a dangerous contact charge.

Prediction

The Warriors have a good recent record against the Titans, winning 9 of their past 11.

However, the Titans have it all to play for here and will be searching for early points to ease their nerves.

I think the Titans will squeeze into the 8.

Champ, troll, same thing really. Which do you usually answer to? Did you find that third Ashley Clown reference? I now believe there were only two after all. What's with the quotation marks by the way? Are you actually quoting somebody or did you just get your fingernails caught in the keyboard? Keep posting as it relieves the lockdown boredom.

Also, in 2014 that would have been 11 teams in the finals.

I thought in golf there was the cut which means a minimum number make it and anyone equal with that position.

Ah, the old ploy of “Call them ‘champ’ when you don’t actually have anything useful to say.”

Painful game to watch as I kinda like both the titans and the warriors. Not sure the the warriors had any senior leadership. The halfback tried hard (lot of tackles, decent number of touches, intervening when people were getting heated), but O'Sullivan probably only has about 20 games total. If Nikorima is too mercurial and Harris-Tavita is more a foil than a general, then their selection made them very exposed to the fitness/form of Townsend. The best I have in terms of a silver lining is that some of the warriors still gave their all. I think Curran and Sironen made 50 ish tackles apiece.

I think it is seriously time to wind up the Warriors. They are not getting home next year, those with children have had to move them through 5 schools, and another shift coming apparently. They get nothing but platitudes from the NRL. This talk about a year of home games in NZ. Give me a lollipop, do you really think the NRL and other clubs will agree to that. It will not happen.

Actually with all the injuries to the Roosters, the Titans could have a reasonable shot.

Yes we have been discussing in our households how a top five finals would be best to ensure quality games and less chance if blowouts...top 8 is a waste of time except the NRL makes more money out of it...also take the mid season State of Origin out -and byes - compress the season and have SOO commencing two weeks after the GF...win win...

Tony, that’s at least twice (I may have missed some) in your posts on this game, but “Ashley Clown” suggests a surprising lack of class for an alleged guru. The man has a name. Use it.
